Spammed to Death: The Unfortunate Tale of the General IM Forum

Oh hey, new IMer. Didn't see you, there.

So you've got a new signature link, huh? I know, I know – you can't wait to show it off to all of us here, even though you've only got 10 posts.

I mean, how could we not think you're credible? You're asking us how to drive traffic to your AdSense site and how to cloak an affiliate link, yet your signature link tells us that you made $2700 in a matter of mere hours last night...

But wait...we, too can achieve the same results for just $97? I mean, wow. You are clearly a marketing wizard. Please take my credit card.

It's my last $100, but I have faith that you're a legitimate guru and won't let me starve to death if I just follow your easy, step-by-step instructions to guide me to internet riches.

I'm going to start right after I finish reading your newest thread, "What Is the Definition of Affiliate Marketing?"

*DISCLAIMER*

This is satire, folks. My post had everything to do with newcomers creating unhelpful posts to spam signature links, and NOTHING to do with post count at all. That reference was simply used to make a point.

Takes a while to see the BS stuff. By that time unfortunately new marketers have bought it. I have an in home computer tutoring client here in Honolulu Hawaii who has bought two programs against my advice she then discarded. When she called again I said

    "Don't you have a Rick?"

    She said, "Yes"

I said, "Then use me and listen!"

    Grrrrrr

I agree with the general spirit of your post, but post count is not an accurate indication of knowledge. Indeed, often the opposite is true. You'll find those who have the most to impart often impart very little.

Not here and that's what makes this forum very unique. Truly successful people sharing their methods. In this forum I look at the post count.

Fair enough. And, if you're right, it makes it truly unique; on this we agree. You'll find the people with the most knowledge are often too busy using that knowledge to post. Therefore: low post count. Those who wish to learn and expose their signature files, and of course the truly altruistic, tend to most more. The majority of the latter have less to offer, but higher post counts. We'll agree to disagree, I suppose.

Not really. It doesn't take much effort to post, and you're not considering that many have the WF as their primary source of traffic/business. So for those, it pays to post often.

Plenty of very knowledgeable people here have thousands of posts.

I'm not saying knowledgeable people don't have high post counts. I'm saying knowledgeable people also have low post counts. I've been around the block a few times and this is the case. Take me, for instance. I have a little over 500 posts and yet I've been in the business 20 years. Some of us are new to WF; some of us are simply not big on forum posting.

            This.

I normally stay entirely out of discussions about post-count, for the glaringly obvious reason that I'm in the sometimes-embarrassing position of having made more posts here than anyone else ... but Joan, so far, has been alone in making the significant point that "how much someone posts" can also be interpreted in the light of whether they're selling/promoting anything here. Some of us aren't, at all, and never have. And I'm - literally - "just saying".

To be fair, Jennifer, the spamminess - and the situations to which you rightly and understandably refer, above - do appear far worse on Saturdays, because at the moment the Main Marketing Forum appears to be unmoderated on Saturdays. So you're actually seeing it at its worst, right now. (That's an exaggeration, actually: I've known it much worse than this. But there's a lot which will doubtless be cleared up as soon as there's next a moderator online, anyway.)

It was satire. There are a lot of people who are just spamming the general IM section of the forum with questions/ a few lines of extremely general information just so they can get their sig link out.

      It contributes nothing.

I'm somewhat familiar with satire, but I appreciate you pointing it out. I was merely jumping in and offering that post counts are not an indication of knowledge. (Fairly obvious, of course.)

And yet, you "look at post count," so to you her opinion has less validity than someone with more post count.

There are people in this very forum with thousands of posts who don't make a dime or make very little money.

There are also people in here with very little posts who make more money in a day than most warriors make in a month regardless of their post count.

Post count isn't an accurate indicator.

But I agree with Jennifer on the spam part. They will learn the hard way when their account gets banned lol

True enough, but they generally aren't asking the "what is affiliate marketing" type questions, either.

As far as moderation on Saturdays, make sure you use the report function. I don't know if the feature still works, but when a post or thread reaches a certain threshold number of reports, it's removed from public view until a mod can make a call on it.

        No one disputes all that.

Some of us are simply making the point that post count is no indication of knowledge. We agree on everything else.

I think my point was misunderstood. It wasn't necessarily that anyone with low post count can't offer valuable information. I clearly have a low post count because I just joined a week or so ago, but I have been around the block a few times and do have some knowledge to share.

My post was directed at the newcomers who are spamming their sig links with low post counts. Because it is obvious that's all they're doing.

I don't even feel comfortable using a signature link yet, because I haven't been around long enough for people to trust me or feel like I have any sort of credibility.

Posting in forums is not about slapping on a signature link and self-promoting as soon as possible. It's about building a reputation for yourself, first. Then you should use a link.

          That was my point.

I understood your points. I agree with them, too. I simply found the post count portion to be inaccurate. If someone, for instance, made a post about how to get rich by developing an operating system and Bill Gates arrived and, with only 1 post, answered his question, I would say, despite his low post count, his opinion would be valid. Highly so.

Most of us think as you do; and, like you, we're also more than a little jaded by the lengths some members go to in exposing their signatures. The post count portion is my only objection. People with high post counts (like Alexa) have a great deal to offer; however, some of those with low post counts do, too.

That's not the point. If we knew him to be Bill Gates, then his point would be valid. I can't tell you how many people I know who rarely make an appearance on a forum, but when they do people listen; either because they know who the person is or because their post is extremely worthwhile. Post count is really irrelevant. People should be judged on what they say, not how many times they say something.

Classy, John. I simply have an opinion and I'm not afraid to debate an issue. It has nothing to do with needing to be right; instead, it has everything to do with feeling I have the right to express my beliefs. My parents and grandparents fought so I could do so. To simply listen to an opinion and secretly - quietly - disagree with it . . . well, that's not ever gonna happen, John.

    Oh no. Straight cash Homie!

You are clearly a marketing wizard.
    Most people don't get that.

No personality is hard for me to communicate with.

My post was directed at the newcomers who are spamming their sig links with low post counts. Because it is obvious that's all they're doing.
Unfortunately, reason has very little effect on these people.

Or perhaps people are just bored with this rainy weather. It's raining here, anyway.
Perhaps some people are very tired of "What is affiliate marketing."

I've said it before, I'll say it again. Figuring out who to listen to is one of the hardest things newbies have to do.

I'd have to agree with you, there. Sometimes I just like to have a good chuckle at their attempts, though. Mostly, I just enjoy making others laugh. Hopefully the post had that effect.

I had to learn to stop hating spammers and start pitying them. Think about it. Go from one site to another dropping a link, never making friends or networking and wondering why they don't get any sales. They may have even bought some ebook that told them to do just that.

          Definitely possible.

Which goes back to the point that Brent made about newbies having to figure out who to listen to.

It sucks to know that there are "marketers" out there who will intentionally give bad advice for the sake of a few bucks...they may even be new themselves, trying to market themselves as seasoned vets. It's a vicious cycle, I suppose.

At the same token, sometimes I just need to alleviate my boredom on an uneventful Saturday by writing some good old satire.

What you have done is repeat your point over and over as if that makes it more true.

I agree that high post count combined with a rather new membership is not something to put much importance on. It's also true people who complain about post count are usually fairly new and claiming expertise. You point out you have 500 posts - but you also have been a member for 9 months. By the time you've been here 10 years you'll be one of those high count peeps.

When you have high post count (guilty here) and a long term history of answering questions here - I do think that counts for something. Many of us have been posting here for a long time AND making a living online at the same time.

You seem quite petulant. This is usually the case when a person is having a bad day; or, in extreme situations, where the person is enduring a bad life. You'll rarely find successful people being unpleasant for no good reason. If this is the case with you, I hope things improve. Sincerely. I'm sure you're a nice person really; maybe life has just got you down.

I understand your comment was a facetious one (at least, I hope so; I hate to think of you wasting precious time scouring forum rules in this instance), but just to clarify for anyone who didn't read my full quote: "Each instance, where I put forth my point, was required. It was in reply to what someone was saying to me."

In other words: if someone directs a comment to me on here, and if I decide to respond to it, my response dictates the mention of certain relevant things. In this case, since people took issue with my post count hypothesis, and since they took issue directly with me, I had to respond by mentioning (reiterating and expanding upon) my hypothesis in order to address their comments. I could hardly have talked about the weather, right?

Instead of being silly, if I were in your shoes, I'd spend my time more fruitfully by educating myself and putting that education to good use. And when someone like myself takes the time out of their day to form an erudite and thoughtful post in your direction, I would assume a little more respect. You'll go much further in this business if you get along; making friends instead of the inverse. This applies to everyone; myself included.

I dislike spammers. Not because they pollute the landscape, but because are disrespectful takers. They take our time, our focus, our productivity, our optimism and our enthusiasm.

In contrast, I try to give more than I take. Like leaving no evidence of your existence behind at a campground, or returning a borrowed car with more gas and a bit cleaner than it was when you borrowed it.

When I have an IM related query, I almost always find what I am looking for through search. No need to start a new thread when it has already been addressed.

When I have a brilliant response to a question I am eminently qualified to answer, but I see *Alexa* (or someone else, occasionally) has beaten me to the punch with a more eloquent reply, I usually move on (that happens a lot). No point in adding redundancy unless I can bring something unique to the conversation.

When I have a brilliant response to a question I am not qualified to answer, I always preface my response with that little fact. It is essential context, and to imply otherwise would diminish whatever true value is left to be had.

Most of all, I like to see people being people. I like the satire, and the ridiculousness of the OT room. And the occasional brilliance of the other sections. And even the audacious claims in the WSO section. I learn by witnessing it all, and participating where I can, and it is a really good day when I can land a zinger that has the effect of pivoting the conversation and creating a better debate.

In other words, I try to leave the forum a little better off than it was when I arrived.

And, I'll admit it... I'm a "thanks" whore. I get the most satisfaction when they pile up at the bottom of one of my posts. It means I succeeded in helping others, or at least bringing a moment of happiness to them. That is the best currency here, by far.

On all of this as a whole, I think I mostly succeed. But that is for others to judge. And history books.

People who make a habit of dropping one-liners for sig exposure fail on every count. And while I do not believe in anything supernatural, I do believe in karma.

And in the end, the love you take
Is equal to the love you make
Link spammers, sig spammers, trolls and crooks will never win. They will just inch along day by day, taking what they can until they are banned, beaten or busted. They will do damage along the way, and some may reap rewards on the journey. But they always have to pay up at some point.

Their lives are not worth much. So, as hometutor said above, they deserve pity, along with the scorn.

There are some people who still can't understand that " How does this OP teach us to earn $2700 even it he yet doesn't know to cloak an affiliate link?". Perhaps, his (OP's) targeted audience may be kind of less experienced people.

That was the point: most of these people have signature links saying they're making all this money, yet they are asking basic questions like "What are some email marketing tips?", "How do I get Facebook traffic?", "How do I drive traffic to my landing page?" and so on...

If they were making that kind of money, they wouldn't be asking those questions. No one believes them.

They are just making posts so people will see their signature link and buy from them, even though they don't look credible at all and no one will end up buying from them.

See but this isn't ALWAYS the case...

I made a post the other day with one word and included a picture with a qutoe as the "main" post... because that's all it needed. It was a very inspirational quote, and sometimes "less is more".

Come to my shock & dismay when I got a PM from an admin that said he had to take my signature out of the post, because people were complaining, and that normally he deletes posts like mine but he was going to let mine stay as long as my sig was taken out.

I had no idea "simple" one sentence or picture posts weren't allowed until now.

I legitimately wasn't trying to "spam" either. I found a very inspiring/motivational quote that I wanted to share that related to internet marketing.

But I agree I'm sure there are many who DO "spam" this way, and that's why my post got flagged is because that's what people thought I was doing :/

95% of those threads are started with the intent to expose signature links or boost post count.

I'm sure you meant no harm, but most people are just trying to self-promote with those types of posts. At least you know for next time and understand the reason behind the mod having to disable your sig.

Best of luck to you in your future experiences on the forum.

Who gives a sh*t about the spammers, post-count wannabes, sig link exploiters, and all the other fools and losers who populate ANY forum - and not just this one. You can report "iffy" posts (as I do) and leave it to the Mods. End of.

I come here to have a laugh and chill out once or twice a day, and . . .

        1) If I brighten anyone's day with a witty line or two then it's a bonus.

        2) If someone brightens my day with a witty line or two then it's a bonus.

        3) If someone gains any knowledge from an insightful post of mine then it's a bonus.

        4) If I gain any knowledge from an insightful post then it's a bonus.

I try not to stress over the small stuff, it's no good for your health. Creating a thread about it accomplishes absolutely zilch - the owners and Mods know exactly what's needed to keep the forum in good shape, and I've no doubt they are working on many things as we speak. Having paid a lot of $$$'s for WF - and coupled with the experience they have, I hardly think for one minute that it's their intention to let spammers ruin WF.

If you come on WF with intentions of enjoying the experience then you tend to simply ignore the flotsam that can impact on it - if you let it!

Just as vexing as the spammers and stupid posts asking daft questions are posts such as this that serve no useful purpose, and more importantly have nothing to do with IM . . . which after all is what we're here for. The OP has spent God knows how much time starting - and making countless replies in this thread over several days. That's time that could have been better spent learning from the many valuable threads that ARE on here, or perhaps going to another forum if WF doesn't satisfy your requirements. Just saying.

I'm sorry you can't appreciate a bit of humor, it's not for everyone. As for us all being here for IM, well that much is obvious. However, most people don't mind the occasional laugh, especially when there aren't a ton of mods around on a Saturday and the board is being spammed with post boosters.

Also, my post did have to do with IM.

Judging from the other replies, quite a few people found it funny – which was my only intent. Can't please everyone, ya know?

I write for a living, so I type fast. I can assure you, I spent less time in this thread than you imagine. No need to worry about that. And for the record, all those replies were in one day (yesterday), not several. Guess that goes to show that people other than you were actually interested in this thread.

As for my need to be learning and doing something valuable with my time, I read many threads, yesterday. Some I learned from, others wasted my time, and others got me involved in some good discussions that made me think. That's the beauty of being able to do what I like with my own time.

I also wrote five SEO articles for a client of mine, in between reading and responding. I was a pretty busy girl, actually.

What did you get up to? All work, no play I'm assuming? I mean, weekends are clearly not for having a little fun

You're right. I guess the OP isn't the only one whose humor doesn't always come through for everyone. My mental picture of "Bill Gates" actually posting to a forum and answering technical questions led to my response.

My mental picture was a lonely nerd type (picture Jon Lovitz in sweatpants and a stained wife-beater tee shirt) sitting in Mama's basement surrounded by pizza boxes and empty Red Bull cans, typing away and thinking "Yeah, Bill Gates, that's the ticket..."

Change your example to BG making a video from his office at MS, and of course we'd all pay attention.

I apologize for the cheap shot.

This thread really gave me a laugh. I don't know where I stand on the post count thing. I've been a member for about 3 years and I don't think I have that many posts considering how long I've been a member.

I love to share my knowledge, however. It's just that I'm picky about which threads I'll post on. A lot of it has to do with threads popping up that have been discussed many times before. If I've posted on one of them, I generally won't post on another thread of the same subject.

I also appreciate the humor in Jennifer's post. It has an element of truth while also being very funny.

Do I win the spam contest? This thread sucks almost as bad as the profile spammers (who, by the way are marketing - so if they pass the spam filter and no one deletes/reports them...well...more power to em')

edit : im expecting sassy response, but I will not take back my opinion.

You're entitled to your own opinion. Others seemed to enjoy it, I certainly don't need your validation
