Hi Warriors,

I'm in the process on creating a DVD set in the self-help arena like what you'd buy of Nightingale Conant. I'm producing it with another person and we are in the process of working out a commission split.

Does anyone here know how much Nightingale Conant get AND how the the author gets?

In the IM industry the standard is 50/50, but what would it be at Nightingale Conant?

Thanks guys,
D

It would be more like 5-15 percent royalties for the author, the rest for Nightingale Conant. They operate on the traditional publishing company model, even though they are operating in audio.

Keep in mind that they fund all the development and production costs of their audio products - costs which are considerable.

Just so you know that I'm not making this up, I've published books with several major NY publishers - Penguin USA, HarperCollins, Henry Holt and others.

Thanks for your feedback. I know you're not making it up:-) Just wondering because ones like Tony Robbins sell his product on his website and well as Nightingale Conant.

Would he have to share the commissions with the ones he sells from his site? It does Nightingale Conant on the packaging.

Would he have to share the commissions with the ones he sells from his site? Yes, definitely. Here's how it works.

As the author, you get to buy the product at a discount from the publisher, then you can sell them and keep your profit. The discount depends on the publisher's policies as well as the number of copies being purchased at one time. Tony Robbins might be buying them from Nightingale Conant at 50-60% off. He then keeps the difference between what he paid NC and what the customer paid him.

These arrangements tend to be very structured. You don't get much room for negotiation.

Sounds like it would be a better deal to self-publish and go to Speaker Fulfillment Services to get the production done.

Michelle, I'm quite sure Joe Vitale would disagree with this statement. He was fortunate enough to land a deal with Nightingale Conant when he was virtually unknown, and that was the first thing that made him visible to a broad business audience.

You see, the money split can be the least of it.

A well-known publisher gives you legitimacy as well as access to their distribution network. This is particularly important for Nightingale Conant - they're a trusted brand with a huge customer list and many of their buyers will buy things from an unknown author because they trust NC will do a good job with it.
