Emails From Domain Being Marked As Spam

Hey All,

I've recently had a problem with a lot of my emails being sent from my hostgator hosted domain being filtered in to people's spam.

The majority of these emails are to single recipients, and generally involve current work being done for them. No bulk emails, no spammy words, no marketing hype ect.

This leads me to two questions:

1. Is there anything I can do to prevent my emails being marked as spam?

2. If not, then is there a host that is typically regarded as not having a high email spam? I don't mind paying more per month if it means my clients get their emails.

Too late, but I never email from my hosting account. There are all types of repercussions from this I can imagine. Try getting a gmail account.

You might look at using a service such as Amazon SES, Mandrill or SendGrid. I use (and like) SES mainly because the rest of my hosted infrastructure is hosted on AWS too, but I'm sure the others I mentioned are just as good.

There are others too if you google "transactional email service", "email infrastructure service" or something similar.

    Good luck!

As mentioned earlier, when you email from your hosting account, you can face all kinds of problems, including getting your domain blacklisted. The problem with hosting accounts like Hostgator is that when you use a shared IP, then even if you are not doing anything wrong, somebody else using the same IP can and it will have repercussions for your site as well.

Either use a VPS with your own IP address or use a gmail account for best results and continued good sending reputation.

It is better to use a free email service such as Gmail for emailing proposes.

Send your outgoing emails via your internet provider, instead of through your web host.

For example, our current internet provider is GEUSNET, so I set up all my incoming email accounts with the normal pop servers: MAIL.MYSITE.COM, but for outgoing, I use SMTP.GEUSNET.COM and I've encountered no problems with spam fillters.

Similarly with Time Warner Cable, outgoing (SMTP) is MAIL.TWC.COM

Just make the SMTP settings for all your email accounts the same as the actual email accounts(s) with your internet provider.

Personally I try to stay away from free email accounts (Gmail, Yahoo, etc.), it tends to provide a cheap image of your company.

you can safely send mail from your domain if you set up an SPF record.
If your hosting comes with a cPanel you can do this from the area called "Email Authentication"

if you are not sure how to do this, contact your webhost and they can create one for you - many hosts automatically do this for you when you create a hosting account with them.

edit: This prevents the possibility of someone using your domain remotely to send spam.

also: The IP address you are using is most likely shared and has likely been identified as a spamming IP. Spend a few bucks and get your own dedicated IP address for your domains

Adding SPF records will not necessarily keep emails from ending up in the recipients' SPAM folders.

You're right - I jumped the gun on this one!
what it does do though, is identifies the server as being authentic to actually send the mail from that domain. So OP please ignore my above response - it's irrelevant to your question.

I have a feeling the shared IP address tied to his hosting account may be used by others who are spamming. For an extra couple of bucks a month, get a dedicated IP address for the domain - that may solve the problem.
