Am I about ready to mess up?...

Greetings, I'm new to warrior forum, so I apologize if this has been asked many times before.

I'm wondering if I'm about ready to really screw up by giving my course away on YouTube.

Over the last year I've spent every waking hour creating an info product in the intermediate "learn guitar" market.

It's a huge course of about 28 hours of video and 1,300 slides and reference sheets along with backing tracks.

I was going to set up a sales funnel and do Facebook advertising etc.

But here is the problem, I'm a complete unknown outside my local market.

So, I've been thinking about making a YouTube channel and putting the course up for free (all 200+ videos) and driving traffic in an attempt to establishing expert status in the market quickly.

Then, I would like to start running Google Adsense (for quick and simple) as well as, sending what subscribers from my channel to an opt-in to build my list. Followed by making affiliate offers, and creating a second product. (This is the first time I've considered affiliate marketing)

Right now I'm a bit burned out on product creation, and I need to start generating money ASAP.

I know there is a lot to learn in regard to affiliate marketing, but does this strategy seem realistic?

I appreciate any input you may have.

Thank you!

sounds good to me. Maybe offer a certain part of your training for free and you can add the full version as a paid product.

You have the right idea though. Work on building yourself a list in that market and brand yourself though your list.

This is probably the 20th "I created a guitar lessons product what do I do with it?" thread I've seen this year.

I have some experience with the guitar lessons niche. I would drip feed the videos on youtube and try to get people to opt in to your list. Then promote guitartricks.com as an affiliate.

Maybe stick it on Udemy, and give away the discount voucher on Youtube.

    Best of both worlds?

If I were you I would have created a much smaller course to start with rather than devoting a whole year to a product you have no people to sell to.

There are so many free video tutorials on Youtube nowadays and I think that's where most beginner students would probably head. I'm a drummer and watch a lot of drum videos and lessons over there.

I've been in the music lessons market in the past and found it not so easy because many beginner students these days would rather sit on Youtube and watch free videos rather than purchase courses.

MisterY, thank you for the link! I'm reading it a couple times.

Brent Stangel, I thank you for the suggestion. I will definitely look into first.

Luke Dennison, I actually did stick it on Udemy, but they don't like you trying to build a list and promote paid courses from free courses. Strange rules, They don't do a whole lot to promote either. That coupled with their the deep discounting of your course up to 90% anyway. I just figured I might as well use it as drip content to create a youtube channel. It seems that traffic/conversion is the real game.

WillR, I would have created a smaller product, I had no idea that it was going to take a year to make (I had to cut it short at that because I was worried about the length) I could have made it longer. I've been teaching in a store for the last 10 years, business is drying up and my boss won't do anything about it because he's clueless about marketing (he even admitted it the other day).

I just knew that I had to get the work done because I had spent the last couple years studying copywriting and marketing books but I wasn't making any progress by just reading.

Thank You for all of the input!

I might start sounding like a fanboy here, but pick up a copy of Jeff Walker's "Launch" book.

Then consider putting your main course behind a paid subscription wall (aka, "membership site") and do a launch style promo for it.

You said your course is at the intermediate level. So, as I see it, your target market is intermediate players and beginners ready to take the next step.

Start building a list of those people, and do a seed launch to establish yourself and add real buyers to your list. You should be able to carve off a part of your course to use for your pre-launch content.

I would post 5 or so videos on Youtube and facebook etc, show people that you are an authority and have some quality content, point them towards your squeeze page for more training videos and use an autoresponder to deliver one every 2-3 days. After a few more videos have been delivered, have an option to buy the rest of the course there an then + reference sheets included.

if you already put in a whole year of your time...there is no way i would give it all away for free...just because you aren't "known" outside your market.

If i were you I would use Jon Bensons 3x vsl formula to craft a winning video sales letter to sale my product...

I would take snippets of the best parts and place them on youtube and run youtube ppc traffic to them, and of course have the videos lead back to your capture page, which then redirects to your vsl.

I would place retargetting and remarketing pixels on all your pages and setup ads on facebook and other social media sites to drive the people who dont initially purchase back to the video sales letter.

And of course I would have a good email follow up that converts prospects into customers by using a great email sequence that establishes your credibiilty and positioning in the market...(Might want to check out autoresponder madness to help you craft it)

JohnMcCabe, thank you, I know setting up a launch can take many months, I'll try to get my hands on the launch book.

zakclayton, I'm leaning toward this right now with the traditional sales funnel/email series/videos and vsl.

I should probably try to sell it first before I give it away.

RyanJohnson1, I hadn't heard of Joe Benson, I just watched all his videos, I'll have to try his product out even though I'm very limited in funds.

Thank you for all your help!

So why not create a facebook fanpage, link that with your youtube channel. Post tips on how some can improve their techniques etc.. Proving you are authority on this topic. From there why don't you encourage your followers to post their performances and best one wins something... Just an idea.

Anyway you have to most importantly stand out from the crowd. Build your brand and prove your the best in the business..... Anything is possible as long as you believe and have an action plan.

I built my brand just through Facebook alone and I make enough money to treat my family to a lifestyle they derserve. So hard work and dedication pays off!!

With that much content, you can give some away for free and sell the rest.

    Definitely sell some.

Absolutely. Start it on YouTube (put ads in vids), build your list with call-to-action at the end of each video telling people to opt-in for behind the scenes, exclusive videos, special training, blahblahblah, and then build a membership site

Sounds like an opportunity to start a membership site instead of just a paid course. Don't think of the one time stuff, think about how you can keep them paying a smaller fee monthly for an extended period of time.

Put out some free lessons to promote, and then have the membership site where users would get access to something like a longer lesson plus materials. Make sure you can keep delivering new content every month to keep active members happy.

What bugs me about this question is the fact that you have a premium product in your hands and you're planning to position yourself as an expert in your market just to be an affiliate.

I think it would be best to:

. Create a lead magnet giving away the best video you have at your disposal.
. Offer half of the videos (100), preferrably the basic tutorials on your thank you page as front end.
. Offer the other half as an upsell.
. Offer live coaching at the back end.
. Offer products that have a monthly recurring commission so you won't have to tire yourself on creating a membership site.

This is also a good niche for people like me who learned to play piano by reading musical notes, but want to play by ear so I can really jam without the need for a music book.

I agree with the idea that drip feeding the videos on to Youtube is better than putting them all up at one. You will not be "messing up" if you are using your video product to build a list - AND you have a plan to monetize that list.

Another plan would be to post for free the beginner lessons and than have a paid for product for more advanced lessons.

Also - not to be a copycat but you can look at how others in that niche do things and that may give you some ideas.

It does sound like you put a lot into creating and you now want to put effort into the marketing. This forum will help a lot. While Youtube is HUGE there are other video ditribution methods (facebook).

I happened to come across Randy Jackson selling his line of unique guitars on a home shopping channel this past weekend. I was mesmerized by how good the presentation was. Randy sat next to the host and chatted while occasionally strumming a tune. There were 3 younger musicians in the background who helped demonstrate the quality of the guitar by playing and singing at key points. It was part performance and part infomercial. The guitar package comes with lessons on CD taught by Randy and one of the musicians with him. They did a great job of breaking down the "value" of each item in the package. It was easy to see how much of a great deal you were getting.

Being that it was also a "Today's Special" thousands of guitars were sold. I did some number crunching and determined Randy and HSN sold over a million dollars of guitars during that presentation, and he had one more presentation to go later on that day.

So, there are plenty of people that want to play guitar and ready to buy one. I think the OP should place teaser videos on Youtube, but not the whole course for free. Set up a website with an opt in that gives people access to more awesome lessons once they join his FREE guitar playing mentorship e-course. Some lessons are free, but you can SELL the most advanced lessons by creating a membership site, selling them as a download package online or putting them on a CD.

Create an autoresponder course and link to private video lessons. Sign up as an Amazon affiliate and recommend guitars and guitar accessories like pics, music, amplifiers, etc.

Randy Jackson pitched to: people that always wanted to play guitar, people that used to play, but gave it up and now want to restart lessons, people buying a gift for a family member interested in guitar.

Beginner players wanting to improve their skills is also a good target market for your lessons. Your promotional page for your lessons can target all these groups.
