What is the legal way to put online pictures in my ebook?

I am assuming it is illegal to take any picture I wish into my ebook. So, what would be the best way to put pictures in my ebook? I will be using pictures of hairstyles.

Ask people for permission?
Use stock photos?

What are the legal ramifications I should be aware of? If anyone can point me in the right direction that would be very helpful.

    Hi Tsavo.
Just use free directories. You can check pixabay.com; it's 100% free and legal.

Your assumption is correct. There are only two ways to do it legally and (more importantly) ethically and you know them both. Ask permission from the owner of the image or buy them (they're not that expensive).
