Owning a forum and Learning to Monitize

Hi. I am interested in developing my own forum. Does anyone know how I could monitize it without offending my members?

I belong to a few forums and I have never received any promotional emails from them, however I have noticed banners above and below the body of the forum,, and also to the sides in some cases.

Can this be enough to generate some decent revenue?

Thanks.

    Skyward,

The bottom line is that a forum is just like a list, only more transparent.

If you can build up around 5 to start and 10 moderators overall with lots of experience in the industry your building a forum around... Treat it like an email list.

Offer value, get guest posters... Ensure your members are taken care of.

Adsense will produce little profit unless the niche is around lawyer topics or mortgages...
Banner ads won't sell well unless you have traffic volume.

SO... In the beginning start with Affilate offers and building a genuine trust with you and your members and the site as a whole.

    That'll help.

      Thanks.

I'm just staring out and having moderators on board is a whole new concept in itself. I've got a great topic, I'm just trying to figure out if
a forum will enable me to earn good money as I go along.

      Thanks for the tips.
