I feel you man. I've been there and back. Making $10k/month in college days, then back to zero. Then up again, down again, up again.

I like that you're thinking long term and using legit whitehat methods only.
And you look like you have a lot to offer.

Build your site, create good content. And be sure to really be active on social media (facebook + youtube). You'll see traffic and fans much more quickly than with traditional SEO.

Mosi,

After seven years of bouncing around trying one thing after another, it seems obvious that you've got to change your whole mindset about what it takes to earn a living online.

You talk about some famous web sites, but having a similar site isn't going to put money into your pocket until you set up a selling system. You need to find demand in the marketplace and something to sell into that demand like a product or service. Even though you've been online and tried a bunch of things, I don't think you're working smart or effectively just yet.

Keep your focus on selling one thing until you have become profitable, then keep at it but include a second thing into the mix. Before long you will have multiple in-demand products that will provide you with multiple streams of income.

Let me caution you . . . it's not going to give you full time income in the beginning. You will have to be persistent and stick it out much longer than you have every persisted before. Stay focused and don't jump around like you have a habit of doing in the past. Eventually, you will be successful.

This is not a huge amount , but definitely if you are on legal ways I appreciate your will . Go by AdSense , ad clicks , amazon and ebay affiliate marketing, monetization of content with various sites.you have a lot readers waiting for you .

Although many do SEO successfully, I would recommend starting by
1. Picking a niche product to sell on an affiliate network
2. Create a free report related to that
3. Set up a sales funnel and squeeze page to capture lead to your mailing list and sell the product
4. Ad more products to upsell and downsell
5. Drive traffic via free methods and once you see a little income, scale it up to paid traffic.

If you're really motivated, create your own products instead of selling someone else's. This way, you can recruit affiliates to sell for you and they will build your business for you.

Yes, this is a system that is a little involved, but it can be implemented in a few weeks and money can start coming in soon after that. It's more a "sure thing" than SEO, where Google can take away your income in a flash by changing their algorithm. Don't depend on Google for your income.

I assume you're fairly young, since maturity knows this statement is absolutely not true. A miserable person who is wealthy will just be a miserable rich person. A happy person who gains wealth has more options in life, but he has already made the choice to be happy.

Forgive me if I've pegged you wrongly, but this is lazy thinking. That's why you've floundered for 7 years. It takes a LOT of work on the front end to make your online biz work. Only after much patience, learning, tweaking, adding value, etc, etc, will you succeed to a point where the biz itself will have momentum. Stop dreaming about making money, and start solving people's problems with great value. The money will follow.

Besides your website, do you consider providing your services in fiverr, or warrior for hire, elance,...etc, because you can provide many services with your experience? Then it will not be very difficult to earn your desired amount.

If you actually stick to one thing then there's no way you can't make money. You just have to put it out there.

1. make your website
2. post your content
3. add all the social media aspects
4. get popular
5. use adsense or sell some kind of product

try this.. don't try to make a million dollars. try to make 1 dollar. If you can make 1 dollar you can make that million dollars eventually.

Build a blog , build a list of subscribers. They can work good together to build income. You can monetize your blog, do SEO and get people to comment on it to get it ranking and you can use it to get subscribers. You can send traffic to a squeeze page and send them to post on your blog where you give good content and promote a product the same time. Building a blog and a list can really work good together to achieve your goal.

It's a good idea to have sites similar to those you mentioned, but the problem is we almost always see only the end results and get dreamy eyed - it's important that you see the hard wok, time and money that is responsible for the success of those sites. Not demotivating you, but it does take a lot of work.

It's easy to experiment once you have a steady earning system. The difficult part is to sustain yourself when you are actually walking the road towards your big goals. Most of the times we start out with big goals without a steady system to keep us afloat while we are at it and that my friend saps your creativity and enthusiasm and might even leave you with a half baked unfinished project.

If you already have a steady system to keep you afloat, go ahead and create something even better than Smashing Magazine and keep working util you outrank it. Always remember to have a proper marketing plan before you create the product.

If you don't have a steady system to keep you afloat, get that sorted out first. Be prepared to invest time and money in your project. You won't get far with your dreams on an empty stomach and wallet.

I hate to be a naysayer but I think youre about to waste a lot of time and effort. There are easier ways to make the kind of money you want without going that route. Youre talking about creating an authority site which will be at the whims of Google even if you finally do get some decent traffic to it. This is not as easy as it used to be.

Yes stick to white hat methods. Otherwise you aren't building anything long term.

My advise is simple:

1. Do some design work for people. Join fiverr or a site like that and start generating some income. Do freelance work on a couple of main sites and actually start getting paid.

2. Spend time each day and build an authority site teaching people something that you are good at. Is that design? or what is it? Then take your time and build this site every day for the next year. Capturing subscribers.

But you have to start being productive. The income goal that you have is not unattainable by any means. You can definitely achieve that. But you have to spend your time actually providing value and getting things done.
