That doesn't work anymore...

That used to work - but it's outdated now...

No one is doing that anymore - it's dead!

How often do we hear that in Internet Marketing?

Chances are you've probably heard it somewhere this week - maybe even on this very forum...

So how are "newbies" (or anyone for that matter) to know what actually works and what doesn't? How do they get out of the "newbie" phase and into the "making money successfully" phase?

The trick is to find something that works! (Okay - hang with tme - this isn't the actual tip)...

Stop trying to re-invent the wheel! Stop asking other people "does this work" and go and find out yourself!

My tip for you is a simple yet powerful one...

Go Back To The Basics!

Stop trying to find the newest loophole in Google and/or chasing the next bright shiny object!

Okay, Coby - so how exactly do I "go back to the basics"?

Easy!

Step 1) Pick a niche.

Step 2) Create or outsource a free offer.

Step 3) Create a Squeeze Page giving away free offer.

Step 4) Drive traffic to squeeze page to collect subscribers.

Step 5) Follow up with those subscribers with additional valuable information and related offers.

Then just rinse an repeat!

Okay - now you might be thinking "That's too simple" or "What about the traffic"?

Those are legitimate concerns but let's address the first one... "It's too simple" - it is indeed simple which is what makes it so great for beginners.

The second concern is a valid one and is one that stops most people from going any farther. But traffic is easy - don't let that hold you back. There is tons of traffic sources out there - both free and paid.

With so many sources out there for traffic - don't use that as an excuse to not make money online...

How do I know this works? I got tired of not making money and trying literally everything. I decided one day to commit myself to only one thing. That thing was list building and I've been using this "basic" plan to make money online since 2010.

So - stop chasing the latest loop holes, fads and bright shiny objects. Look at the past and current Internet Marketing "Gurus" are doing to make money and nearly all of them are using email as the basic foundation of their business.

What are some other "basic plans" that have worked for you?

Cheers,
Coby

The best basic advice I can give is to find a hungry market and then find a way to present a product to them that they can't pass up. People tend to over-complicate things, but in the end it's all about putting the right product in front of the right people.

We see threads all the time on the forums where people have a product they've created, but haven't given any thought as to who they're going to market the product to. Identifying the market and the advertising venue you're going to use should be one of the first steps, not the last.

Pick a niche, pick or create a product or service and figure out a way to get that product or service in front of the people who need it the most. Build a mailing list in the process, build a working relationship with your list and you'll be able to sell to them time and time again.

Oh yeah...I almost forgot. Stop looking for that easy button software package or information product that's going to unlock untold riches for you. It doesn't exist. You're going to have to work at it to make money online.

This is definitely important. No matter what business model you choose. You have to stop chasing bright shiny objects and focus on just ONE model.

For me, I didn't start making progress until I stopped trying to do everything and focused on learning and succeeding at one proven business model. List building.

      Thanks for the input!

Sounds like pokemon. Gotta catch em all. Simple right?

Keep building. It will only make you (us) stronger.

    Hi Cody,

    Very well said.

And yes, I can understand why a person would be constantly
asking that same question over and over and over.

The main reason for that reaction to all things "Internet," is the
fear and dread of being hurt one more time.

They, (mostly the newbies) rushed to the Internet, all starry-eyed
and bushy-tailed... With a gigantic dream of making the millions
by 8:01 a.m. the next day.

But you and I know fully well what happened the next day,
when nothing of the sort came to pass. The exasperation of
no mean order: the frothing at the mouth; the eyes rolling back
into their sockets; and the stuttering, because they are having
such a difficult time getting the cuss words out of their mouth fast
enough; the sweat pebbles forming on the brow, and the eyes
    ablaze, and bulging with rage.

Okay. Sounds like drama, Cody? Well, think again.
Just give thanks that you were not at the other end
of that timely reaction ... ;-))))))))) ***GRIN***
    LOLOLOLOL

Now, if you are 'weaken-hearted', and have that same scenario
happen to you from time and time and time again, what do
you think will be the "normal" response, the next time that
    occurs?

You got it: everyone on the Internet was born a gigantic
liar. Actually, every single Internet marketer started lying
even before they came out of the womb.

Okay. Okay. That might be taking it a little too far now. ;-))

Unless my brain cells have all turned into complete muss, I
can say with assurance that all successful online marketers
have gone down that same path - in much or in little - but
they all have. Ask them. As yourself, Cody ;-))) Just
    kidding.

Now, having said that, I really do not buy into the WWW adage
that such a behavior is "a right to passage." Although, from my
experience, it would certainly appear that way. ;-)

They will get it, Cody. Believe you me, they will. If Alodie
did eventually ‘get it’, anyone else will, can, and should get it.

It just takes time... more time for some.

Great post, Cody. I learned much from your post.

    Thanks a lot.

    Cheers

    Alodie.

It does seem too easy to be true however I do believe it, the only thing is that when I buy training that says it is so easy to build a list you end up with 100+ page PDF plus hours of videos and I get easily overwhelmed, don't get me wrong it's great value for money but what really want is training with the most basic step by step way to build a list, basically with the points you mentioned above but more step by step, do you know of one that I could buy that sounds like this?

This is the way you should think even though it is not true but it will grow your business faster:

    There is very little competition.

There aren't a lot of lists out there.

There is high demand for this product.

List building is the way to go for me and the fortune is in the follow up.

    I will succeed.

It is easy for me to generate opt ins for my list.

I am going to give my subscribers so much value that many of them will buy what ever I am promoting.

When you think like this, good things will happen.

      Nice thread Coby.

I have to agree that too many people come to Internet Marketing expecting that there are secrets and magic formulas to uncover in order to be successful and create a full-time income.

The basics are there. They often appear to be too easy or too universal to really work in today's complicated world.

I often see people on this forum complaining that this or that method doesn't work anymore. But you know what? Most of the time the problem is with the marketer not applying the basic principles in the right manner, or not being focused enough, or not being persistent, or having a lousy product, or offering poor service.

Go to work on one thing, test and track results, modify and adapt, be persistent and patient, treat your customers like gold, and stay on top of your market. You will get to where you want to be.

Very true with the basics. Get yourself profitable with a basic sales funnel (like the one you indicated) then scale up. I over complicated things in the beginning- and it wasted a lot of time.

OK, YOU GAVE A SUMMARY BUT IT IS NOT GOING TO WORK WITHPUT THE PROPER GUIDANCE.
example: send traffic (there is a million sources of traffic and 99.9999999999999% do not work
you said use saless funnels: there is a million sakles funnels and 99.999999999 % do not work.
anyway: people have to test or get a mentor to show them the way

Coby's tips are essential. I can tell he knows what he's doing when marketing online. In fact his 5-point plan pretty much sums it all up. It's up to you to get massive amounts of targeted traffic. I would recommend paid advertising for this. Earlier in the past i would have said do tons of free marketing FIRST... but nowadays i like to cut to the chase and make the money now.

Like many, I too over complicated things in the beginning of my online journey. I just thought that it couldn't possibly be that simple.

PLUS, it's SO easy to get distracted by all the shiny new things that you're bombarded with on a daily basis. I DID learn to write a decent sales letter from reading so many online.

Another mistake I made initially was not tracking my results consistently. Honestly, I was just lazy, but then I got serious about my business. Be sure to test and track all your efforts to get the best possible results.

Could no agree more! So many marketers get caught in the "rabbit chasing business" (which is funny because I was writing about this in my wso...not self promoting I promise!) and yet the biggest secret to succeeding at this business is focus paired with patience. I mean, yes, you need to follow a system like you've outlined here and great job in this overview. But once you have that, just focus and repeat and commit to it.

I think there's this theory that anyone can just get rich overnight online and it becomes an expectation held by many newbies to IM. But the truth is, what most think is a long time to take to get wealthy is really not long at all. And if you're not patient you'll jump from one thing to another and never succeed at anything. But with focus and patience you'll actually start building momentum and one day you wake up and the sales went through the roof and you have this weird realization that you're not totally surprised. Because you've been building to it so it just makes sense.

So from a more mindset angle let me outline this little road map that has and is working for me:

    1. Every day put your mind in the head-space of success...thoughts are things...put thought into being who you intend to be when that day arrives that you wake up with sales rolling in and not a care in the world. Make it such a strong intention that you're not surprised by it. Stand, walk, smile...as if you are the person you're trying to become. Because you'll make it true if you begin with your mind and your body.

    2. Put faith and belief in yourself and your hunches. Trust yourself. People don't talk about this enough. We talk about putting our faith in others, god, a system, etc. But when you believe in yourself, others do too and things begin moving and working out for you.

    3. Focus. Not just focusing on a particular system etc. But Focus in the form of commitment. Decide how long you're going to try the business/product/etc you're doing and stick to it. Focus when you do the work. Keep asking, what could I improve on here? and focus on making improvements and adjustments where necessary...but only after patient observation so you really know where to make adjustments.

For example, put into place mechanisms that allow you to make these decisions. Track everything, page views, clicks, conversions...everything. Watch the numbers and make decisions that are smart. If you're going to change something on your sales page or squeeze page, only change 1 thing at a time and wait, let it reveal if it helped or not. Don't go changing the headline, closing and price all at once, because if your conversions change you won't know which element did it.

    4. Stop and celebrate. I don't care if you have 1 new sale the entire day. Celebrate every success. You don't have to break open a new champagne bottle every time but pause and let yourself settle into the mindset of gratitude.

A good way to do this is remind yourself, before you did this business you had no sales. This sale is a sign of your success!

I've got more but that's a lot for this reply!

So true, this is what separates the REAL marketers from the wannabees, I mean don't get me wrong but its really that simple and that hard as well... It requires effort and its a business!

Dedication. Many will start doing a project and stop halfway or even few minutes after they started. It takes time, it requires some deep thinking and research but It will come if you just go do it.
