They call me the Google man...

I've been using Google related apps/extensions exclusively for the past 6 months to run my business. It has saved me HUNDREDS of dollars by doing this. Wondering if anyone is doing the same or has run into any problems by doing this?

Some examples:
- Google Hangouts on Air/Screencastify over Camtasia
- Google Docs(especially Google Slides) over Microsoft Word suite
- Youtube Editor program to edit videos

Thoughts?

PS: Posting this to let mostly new users know that you can save a lot of starting capital by utilizing Google!

  • Hello.
You're right. It's very usefull for basic use. But it depends on your activicty.
YouTube Editor for example can't provide Camstasia/CorelVideoStudio tools...

    • You are very right. I mainly use it to cut video lengths. Definitely depends on the activity!
  • By using all those, Google now knows more about your business than you do

    • Again, this is a bad thing? Please explain more?
  • Do you want them in your business? What every happened to privacy and common sense? You're in their "web".

    • Not sure what you are implying. Do you have knowledge that this is a bad idea? Please share!
  • I don't ususally like to keep all my eggs in one basket. I use a variety of tools rather than just using Google. Nothing wrong with using just google, i'm just saying what i do.
  • Yes, I've used Google's eco-system for a while now.

I've been using Google Docs (now GDrive) before it was cool to use it. Even if it is not a full fledged editing suite (and Office 365 is superior), I always liked it for saving every few seconds in the cloud.
  • I do love Google Docs as well
  • If anyone is looking for free software they can use, but you don't want to rely on Google apps, there are plenty of other options available.

You can use open office for text, spread sheets, power point style presentations, etc.

For screen capture software I've been pretty happy with ActivePresenter.

For video editing, Lightworks has a free version with lots of great features. I haven't used that one before but it looks pretty good.
  • I love Google Drive and Google Docs

Here's an article I wrote on it's basic use for newbies

I've tried OneDrive which was formally Skydrive, but it was just too restrctive. In OneDrive I can only save to the latest Office format. I cannot even save as PDFs. One nice thing about OneDrive over Google Drive however is it is easier to syn my in home computer clients' photos on OneDrive on their iPads and iPhones. I try to keep my computer clients out of the Apple death loop.

  • I think it is a very practical, sensible idea - Google office apps provide everything most businesses require for day to day functioning - and they are free. Privacy concerns arise because Google is a monopolist company and has links to govt agencies who can 'keep tabs' on you if they so desire - but they can anyway using the global intelligence system - we are all under surveillance(!)
Good thinking mate, you get this week's award for clear business sense!
  • Just wait until they revoke your access for violation of their ambiguous terms and conditions and without telling you the reason..
I lost my youtube, adsense and adwords accounts and I for the life of me, don't know why!!. Try asking them, and they just refer you to their terms and conditions.

I aint a bad lad ..honest, but I for one avoid any google apps these days, it's so easy to become reliant on them and when they cut you off ..well need I say more?
  • Google has really great services and it keeps developing new every year. I hope they would keep their payment policy forever
  • As client, when I see Google Hangout I move away. It give me the feeling of unprofessional work.

    • Hundreds of dollars really isn't all that much. I personally don't mind paying for something if it increases my productivity or content creation time. I am interested in trying Google Experiments though for split testing.
