Am I guilty of discrimination? Not!

Hi Warriors,

I just sent an email to my list, citing studies that people who are taller tend to be perceived as more attractive and become more successful in life.

Well, one subscriber didn't like what I said and thinks I'm discriminatory.

Here's what he said:

"I don't get offended easily, but you have definitely succeeded this time. Next week, try telling African Americans they should attempt to be white and see how that goes over.

Or that women should all get sex changes to become men, because men make more money than women. I bet you'll be super popular.
"

If he has the "right" idea, then it's discriminatory to tell people the negative effects of obesity. Or it's discriminatory to write about things that cure acne, bad breath, body odor, etc. etc.

Do you think I'm discriminatory?

Thanks,
Michael

    Micheal,

I don't think your comments were remotely discriminatory. Your outlining information taken from another source - You are not saying this is your personal opinion.

If the person who emailed you took exception to the comment, that say's more about them than it does about you!

Save your energy for more important things....this person's comment is not worth wasting your time over. At best their comments are flawed; at worst they are idiotic :p

oh...by the way I'm 5ft tall and I like me just the way I am!

I'm not so tall myself, but some people can adjust their apparent height more easily than others, you know?

      here! here! well said alexa:p

I wonder if the offense was more about what came after the studies said than what the actual studies said. Did you then go on to promote a "how to get taller" product?

For example, I know that there are plenty of studies that suggest that men make more money than women. That's fine. That's a fact. But if you pitched me a product about how I should act more like a man if I want to succeed, well, I wouldn't like that too much...
    Love,

      Michael,
You've given us only limited context, but, based on the quotes you've shown us, I don't think you were discriminating at all. I will say that it's usually very good practice to include statistics in your work and reference your source. That's what any reputable news organization will do. This way you've got coverage in case a lawsuit emerges or if someone publicly challenges your claims. It certainly will add to your authenticity and professionalism.
