Hi Warriors,

Just doing a little research and I came across this video of a little girl
that looks like she's about 2 years old but she is actually 16 years old.

The Doctors are baffled...

Think something like this could be monetised or should it be left alone?

Just curious.

What do you meant with this statement, You had intentions to monetize in this niche, and then you tell a member that wants to find a cure for this condition, to wellll, to write better, more useful posts???

        What's up with that.

    Hi Mike....

It's such a rare condition....unless the mother wanted to buy something...I don't see many others following suit...how much of a market could there be for this? Definately a heart tugging story but unless your collecting donations, I don't see any opportunity here.

I guess if you run carnival side shows during the 19th century you might be able to do something with this. At that time exploitation of less fortunate human beings was acceptable. Fortunately, it isn't now.

I really hope your question wasn't serious. I'll just presume it was a really poor and accidental joke of some kind for now.

        I don't think I've misunderstood anything.

You're asking a forum about monetizing the story of a young girl who has certain developmental issues.

I, as a member of the forum, answered your question.

        Remember, you asked.

If you don't like the answers to your questions, don't ask.

Lol...As a member of the forum you have every right to your opinion

It's amazing how some people can read a paragraph and only really see
          the sentence that disturbs them.

If you would read the thread again at a normal pace you might find that I
wasn't out to do any harm. I just asked a question and all you can focus
on is the negative side of it. Now who is the bad person? The person that

Ah - but that's the problem with the written (as opposed to the spoken) word. There are no other clues about your meaning - no intonation, to chance to ask you to rephrase.

As the writer, isn't it your responsibility to ensure the question can't be misunderstood.

And are you sure you aren't misunderstanding the responder. He asked a question too!!

I presume you're referring to the 'Western World'? There are still many countries in the world, some of them the most populace, where that kind of thing is happening - today.

      Example - here

      Snippet -

Sacked from his job and deserted by his wife, Dede has been raising his two children - now in their late teens - in poverty, resigned to the fact that local doctors had no cure for his condition.

To make ends meet he even joined a local "freak show", parading in front of a paying audience alongside victims of other peculiar diseases.

Although supported by his extended family, he was often a target of abuse and ridicule in his rural fishing village.

This is still happening in the 'Western World' only we have television documentaries. Pretending to be scientific studies but really just
saying 'My God look at that!'

If these things prompted people to donate money for research into
what ever condition is featured there may be some purpose but I
doubt that that is the intent or result of the programmes.

          Hi Susanrh,

This is still happening in the 'Western World' only we have television documentaries.
Well yes. It can actually help, such as in the case that I linked to.

But now an American dermatology expert who flew out to Dede's home village south of the capital Jakarta claims to have identified his condition, and proposed a treatment that could transform his life.
Dr Gaspari hopes to get the necessary drugs free of charge from pharmaceutical firms. They would then be administered by Indonesian doctors under his supervision.
Once something has worldwide publicity, then ideally, the necessary assistance can be gleaned from parties with a vested interest.

How many drug companies could do with a reputation boost?

          ...........

But admittedly, looking at it from the angle that you have, leads me to mention that we DO have our own version of medieval freak shows, which appear to be growing in prominence - it's known nowadays as 'reality TV.'

As it happens, I know a song about that

          world freak show

This child may be a Primordial Dwarf. (A very rare form of dwarfism.)

If you were to pursue this niche, and not in a sensationalist manner, there would probably be a wide range of products and services for both the individuals and the families of those affected.

However, if you are only interested in monetizing this niche for the sake of making money and not offering much of value in return, you may need to rethink your intentions. Capitalizing on someone else's unusual physical condition just for the sake of earning money is not an honorable motive.

However, if you have a sincere desire to help and some valid experience, services or insight to offer, you could probably carve out a specialized niche on this topic.

It's already being monetized -- not only the example you presented there, but Roger's example of "Tree Man" Dede. Just watch TLC (The Learning Channel).

That station is always running specials such as "The Tree Man" (yep, Dede was featured on TLC), primordial dwarfism shows, shows about "giants", shows about very obese folks (1000+ pounds), shows about "electric people," shows about people who have uncontrollable hair growth on their faces as well as their bodies... and other specials with people who have really rare medical conditions.

    cheers,

As the father of a child who lived for 8 years but didn't grow past the 11 month stage I would say leave it alone.

I lived through what this girls parents are going through, to a large degree, and know first hand what it feels like to be exploited by someone looking for a quick buck.

Unless you have a personal relationship with the girl and her parents, and have full parent approval I think it is extremely poor taste to try to make money off of this girls situation.
