Can someone explain to me the concept of mind mapping?

Hey everyone,

I have heard many times from people that the better way of planning your product is through mind mapping. I use the regular old note taking method, but I have heard many great things about mind mapping. Can someone explain to me the concept of it?

Tony Buzan developed the technique when he was studying at University he found that conventional study techniques didn't work, he started to play about with multi coloured notes and found the worked better for him. Then he found that by linking words together graphically it worked even better. I've been using it for 10 years it's fantastic for brainstorming.

Where I find the benefit is mind mapping is, unlike note taking, a non linear process which is the way that our brains are wired. I found it I was working on something, my notes would become very messy as I would have ideas that were "out of sequence" with where my notes were.

There are some fantastic tools for creating mind maps available, some free some paid for.

The basics of Mind Mapping are this. Take a blank piece of paper. Draw a bubble in the middle of the page. Inside write a short phrase of something you are investigating. E.g. Product Ideas. Then draw some lines going from the circle and investigate the different ideas you have. Try to use only one word per line. Let them extend.

You can also use colors, diagrams, pictures etc. This kind of work lets you see connections and have a lot of information on one page.

Start by just playing around with this and buying a basic Mind Map book by Tony Buzan or look at a Mind Map website to get you started.

You can use this for so many different areas.

Oh we studied this as brain storming, Its one of the fastest ways to gather ideas that's for sure. Works wonders.

I see it like a tree, we start from the root idea and keep dividing ourselves into different branches with time.
