Relationships and Business

How do you disassociate your personal relationship (with a girlfriend/boyfriend, husband/wife) with business?

For example, I have worked for myself for 5 years now. My girlfriend might work from 7am - 1pm. I'll work from about 9am - 1pm and then want to work again later in the day. She sometimes takes this personally and isn't comfortable with me working when she's off. It's a repeat battle with anyone, friend, family, etc. they all believe I have complete freedom and don't have to work in order to make money.

Since I am my own boss, it's difficult to tell her that I have to work. I can say it, but then she'll say that I should have worked earlier in the day. My brain doesn't function the same and I typically do my best work and am most productive later in the day (afternoon) and late evenings.

Anyways, I'd really appreciate any advice from others that are working from home (I usually work at Starbucks) and are in a relationship.

I had the same problem. My work schedule conflicted with girl friend time. Especially when a product I was marketing took off. I had to find little extra ways to make it up to her. Creative ways. Plus, go outside my comfort zone and find ways to compromise. You will to if you want to keep your girl happy.

I hope you heed my suggestions.

Here are some tips that help with me and my wife.
    • Be open with her. Tell her that you work best at those times. I know that certain periods of the day for me (8am - 1pm) are the best. My wife knows that when I'm able to focus 100% on work at those times, it means during the other times I can be 100% focussed on my wife (instead of having thoughts about work in the background of my mind).
    • I let my wife know if I have something coming up in advance. Particularly if it is something that will take some time - I usually give myself extra time that what I really need just in case something goes wrong. If nothing goes wrong, then she is pleasantly surprised when I manage to get the extra time to spend with her. Maybe do something together just before a really busy time.
    • Put aside a small amount of time each day/week etc just for her. Turn off phone, turn of computer, and get out of the house. Make it just you two. Quality over quantity. Me and my wife go to our favourite cafe, play a game of chess and just talk - just like a date. Leave work at work. Make sure you are 100% focussed on your partner during that time. It will do you good as well - even if you don't think so at the time.
    • Read the The Five Love LanguagesThe Five Love Languages . This will help with determining what makes her feel loved. Sometimes it is the little things. My wife is someone who feels love through physical touch (read the book for this to make more sense), so I always so little things like saying I love you and kissing her as soon as I wake up, hugging her as soon as she gets home or randomly hugging her from behind when she is not looking. All these take no more than 10 seconds and it makes a massive difference and leaves her feeling loved.

Hope that helps and gives you some ideas to take on with you and your partner

This is always a tough battle. Compromise is really the only way to make it happen. You may have to give up some work hours but she should be willing to give up some of her time with you as well. Meet somewhere in the middle.

Do you have a home office? If so post your working hours on the door and close it. Don't take personal calls or visits during business hours, just like any offline business would do. Once people, including your girlfriend, see you mean it they will adjust. After all they want what's best for you and your business don they?
