Who Told You To Set Goals? THEY LIED!

Okay, maybe they didn't lie... but most people go about setting goals so absolutely wrong. Yes, it is important to set goals... but, there's something about them that are so wrong.

Recently, I had an epiphany. Maybe our goals are hurting us.

So many gurus tell you to set a goal and FOCUS HARD on just that goal. But the thing is so many people set goals that suck. They set goals that don't empower them and motivate them. They only set goals that they THINK they can reach or that they feel their peers will be COMFORTABLE with them reaching.

The majority of people set the bar too low right out of the gate because they feel there is some sort of pressure on them to accomplish a goal.

I used to be this way until I started out for a different approach. Instead of setting definite goals and focusing and obsessing over them..

I decided that I wanted to see RESULTS.

Goals have sort of become a cliche in our culture now a days. There's thousands upon thousands of books and videos and opinions on goals but people rarely talk about RESULTS.

Lets just take a minute to think about this. Why do most people fail at New Years Goals or Resolutions? Because, for most people the word goal has developed sort of a negative connotation as much as we want it to be positive most people actually resist and repel from goals on a SUBCONSCIOUS level.

People have set goals and failed for so long that the pattern for failure after setting a goal is almost programmed into them.

Let's not forget how lazy people are and how they want INSTANT GRATIFICATION. Yes, people set New Year's Resolutions that they want to lose 40 pounds by the summer... but what happens as soon as they miss a day at the gym? Or they haven't lost 10 pounds in their first week of heading to the gym?

There is no Instant Gratification and people fall back into their normal habits and patterns.

But what about results?

Results make you want to get off your A$$ and make something happen... the most average people do with goals is read them and go back to their daily lives or they only put in 10% f their potential.

I used to be a person that needed Instant Gratification for motivation. I had a picture and a goal in my mind of how I wanted things to happen the very first time and if it didn't I said SCREW IT!

But once I started to change my view and focus on RESULTS. Everything changed.

I knew that the only way to get results was to take action, and by taking that action... ultimately I was reaching my goals anyway.

Let me explain this a little bit further.

I'm a big fan of basketball and in basketball there is an ultimate goal. To get a Championship Ring at the end of the season. That's everyone's goal.

Now in order to reach that goal of making it to that goal of getting to the Championship. Teams must first make it to the playoffs, where the best teams of the season compete for the last 2 spots in the Championship.

Now, before a team can even reach the playoffs... they must hold a certain record within the nba... i.e. more wins than loses.

How does a team obtain this record of wins vs. loses? By playing their scheduled games in the regular season.

Now in the NBA basketball world, there are 2 halfs to the season. The half Before the All-Star Games and the Half AFTER the ALL - Star games.

Both halfs are equally important, but each half serves a different purpose for the team. It's all about results. Let me break this down.

The 1st half of the season... From the very first game up until the All - Star Game is all about PLAYER Results... each team want to see what each player is providing to the team and how they are going to be able to help in the second half of the season.

Player Results come into play right when the All-Star Games hit. This is trading time. This is when teams evaluate the productiveness of the players on their team and decide if they want to trade and tweak the team for better results in the second half.

Now, we're in the second half of the season... this is where TEAM RESULTS matter. Everyone is fighting for the spots in the playoffs.

Each team goes out on their scheduled nights to produce results. Some teams make it to the Playoffs and some don't but it's all about results.

Play by play every night. Win or lose, teams tweak and tweak until they get it right.
If they lose a game do you think they all go home and quit the rest of the season... no they tweak and get ready for the next game's results.

I used to be afraid to fail. I realized "failure" we call it is nothing but feedback for my actions. Maybe I didn't do something right or in the right order at the right time.

Goals are fine and dandy, but until you grasp the concept of RESULTS. Most people will never really accomplish the goals they wish because to most failing means give up.

But for me failing means a learned lesson to help me try again and move forward! Results have become my instant gratification. Why? Because I know for every action I take I am going to get INSTANT FEEDBACK and results that I can use to tweak my approach at whatever it is I am trying to accomplish.

I take more action because I know the more action I take the more results Ill get.

This is just my approach.

What about you?

how is the no bed thing working out for you ? ..

i have a different approach but i didn't read your entire post just up to the nba part ..

goals are important ..when you are already doing something and you focus on where you want to go ..

but if you just set the goals and then try to get up the motivation from having the goal..you will probably fail..

my drive has to get my health back in order ..and sence july i have lost 30 pounds ..so i am down from 250 + to a little over 220..but i also have more muscle at 36 years old than any other time in my life .. and a big roll of extra skin from all the fat i have lost ..

i really have not went to the gym ..and for the most part it has been working and cooking as much of my food as possible ..

in getting my health back together ..the next set of things i need to do to take things to the next level is right there for me to do.. starting in a few months ..

at this point there is several options on what i can do..the ones that seem best are the ones i will call goals ..

now part of my goal require physically demanding work..because i enjoy that .. producing a real product that can be marketed through the internet .

The no bed thing is working great. I'm a lot more productive than ever before. Really stretching myself to only sleep when I feel I absolutely need. Maximizing my hours in the day.

Not something I'm going to do long term. But the short term sacrifice is worth it.

Congrats on your weight loss. What kind of foods do you start cooking for yourself?

as far as the food goes .. i don't eat red meat anymore..because i don't digest it well ..so meat wise ..it is chickn pork or fish ...eggs in the morning ..and i pretty much get suteed and browned onions in everything i cook as well as mushrooms..then to improve taste ..calentro , oregano powdered garlic basil ..

untill i can gro my own food i don't mess with veg because most of what it in the store is crap.. that seem to go bad the second you get it home ..

now i tend to make my own mashed potatos ..and i have finally founf my preffered potato lol .. or i will cook rice ..and add stuff in .

in any case i eat according to my activity level..so in the last week i have been doing more work so eating more ..

i have to use store bought bread right now ..but eventually i will get a small wheat grinder and grind wheat to make my own bread and pasta ..

the less chimical additives in the food i eat the better .

no my life went of the rail do to a few conditions..cronic stress, cronic sleep deprivasion and bad diet ..

my Goal (Ha!) is to get somewhere warm most of the year ..where i can own a piece of land have a small fish pond a few chicken or ducks..and grow much of the food i eat ..

after the biigest expence in people live ..taxes

what people eat ..and their physical condition ..dictates how much money they make and keep..and medical expenses really eat into people finances or cause them to go bankrupt .
i know being nearly disbeled a few years ago between the condition my back and head was in .. didn't do much for my finances ..

but i may have goals but i didn't just set them.. then do something .. i started doing stuff and then set goals according to where i want to go..

now though i think intentionally depriving yourself off sleep will turn out bad in the long term .I don't usually need 8 hours of sleep..when i am warm and can breath outside air while asleep 5-6 hour is more than enough ..

but sleep shuts your mind of so your body can repair ..but if you are not feeding what yiour body needs you won't repair .

now are you making money to live..or are you living to make money

I'm a big fan of the NBA myself so I was able to resonate with your post on a personal level.

When you start taking action you will start to make progress towards your goal, but you will also make mistakes and possibly fail (which is a part of life that can't be avoided). However, when you make mistakes and fail, you're not supposed to quit, instead, you need to learn from your mistakes while making adjustments in order to reach your ultimate goal in the end.

At the end of the day, results is the only thing that matters. It's important to have goals in order to know where you're going, but you need to be able to execute.

one thing i have learned ..is there tends not to be an ultimate goal..just the next goal or set of goal.

each goal you hit ..opens up a wide range of other goal to set ..and at time gives you the option to drop other goals that just dont fit anymore ..

i have said that i have lost weight and put on mucle without technically hitting the gym or working out ..but now there is the desire from my body to be worked to build more muscle just to see how far i can get .. but there is no desire to be competitive ..i at nearly 37 for the first time like looking in the mirror and seeing my body..but i can also see the potential ..

which is why i have suddenly started watching you tube channels from weight lifter /body builders ..

at this point i am pretty much at 0 financially with as much in the bank as i ow on my small credit card ..but i had to attend to other goals before i found the path i am about to take to build my wealth ..and it was directly from fixing my mental health..my spirtual self..and my physical health ..that the path to wealth ..for me showed itself ..

for the first thirtyfour years of my life ..i alwaye=s though i needed the money first to fix the other problems ..but it turned out to be backwards ..

goals are very important ..but there has to be an order and the building of momentum ..and and understanding there is no ultimate goal ...

say you get rich..then what.. and how will you live your life once you are rich ..and even if you have a million in assets ..and a decent 5 %return that you can earn 50 k per year per million ..in assets ..that puts you in the top 5 % in US and top 1 percent of your fello human beings ..

now my long term goal is to reduce my cost of living down.. as i build assets while being able to have a high quality of life ..and earn money from things i do to have that quality of life and be able to roll as many personal expenses into business expenses as possible ,

i don't know for certain but trump lives in his buildings and his offices are in his building..and he flies everywhere on his private jumbo jet ..how much of that do you think he has to realize in personal income and pay for out of his pocket..and how much do you think is covered by his multiple businesses .

Ok so what I understood is that you focus on the results. The results of a specific action keeps you going? What if the results is negative? Do you still want to take action the next day knowing that you fail yesterday?

Also do results really bring that much pleasure? I really need to work on a super boring task that I don't want to do vs go out with my friends and have fun. I don't see the results of this super boring taks to excite me... Why will I take action?

Let's take your NBA example. The playoff is only the final stage. What makes someone great is the daily actions. The hard workout and grind that they need to do on a daily basis. Well the results of these workouts are similar everyday. When you are at this level you don't see a lot of change on a daily basis. Why keep going?

    Cheers,

C.G. I don't care about negative results because any action you take will have either a positive or "negative" result.

When I speak of results. It's almost like collecting data to me. You take a specific set of actions and you collect the data/results or feedback rather you get from those actions and go from there.

If the results are "negative" then yes I'm still motivated. People so often associate "negative" results or something that they hadn't pre-planned happening to failure. That's what stops most people from pushing forward and keep taking action.

I think it's all about mindset and what you focus on. Nothing In My Opinion is really "negative" or a failure... its all feedback that we can learn from. So when something doesn't go my way or the way I pre-planned it in my mind... I take the results and pull out the lessons that I've learned.

About your super boring task... I think its all personal preference... for me, results excite me... just knowing that there is something that I'm dreading to do will make me want to get it done because of the result of me not having to do it anymore and just getting it out of the way and having it off my mind would make me want to do it.

On your NBA response... Keep going because you know you put in the actions. Everything like I said before has either a positive or negative result or you can even say a positive or negative consequence that comes with it. You work out every day... you're building muscles, burning calories, etc. those are still results that build upon each other. You've stretched yourself. Despite many other things you could be doing you worked on yourself.

Whether you can physically SEE the result everyday doesn't matter. At the end of the day there is still a result.

I'm not trying to write a book here nor change anyone's approach to how they go about doing what they do, this is just my way. Maybe you can't understand my way, that's why yours works better for you.
