Hi there!

I believe it is very natural to want to procrastinate; after all it's an action that has to do with both pain and pleasure. It's all about putting off the pain of completing the task for short term pleasure of not doing it now.

Here is the thing though, the longer we put the task off the less pleasure we receive, and in most cases, have to go through the pain of completing the task anyway. I tend to be a procrastinator myself, the best advice I've ever received was in a book by Anthony Robbins.

The problem with procrastination is the way we tend to visualize the task in our mind. Take two tasks, an enjoyable one and an un-enjoyable one. If we don't like going to the gym (like most people) we tend to represent that task in our minds with a lot of little tasks which seems like a lot of work; pack the gym bag, get your water bottle, drive to the gym...etc. However if visualize something fun like going to the beach, we tend to represent that in our mind only as one little, easy to complete task.

Sometimes I think another reason we procrastinate is because we are confused about what we have to do, and when that happens we tend to stop and get distracted. Another solution to procrastination is to gain clarity on what needs to be done to complete the task.

So next time you find yourself procrastinating, try to visualize the task as one task instead of a whole bunch of tasks you have to complete. Also remember that the pain of completing the task is often much less than the pain of putting it off and having to stress about it.

This does not work. Let me give you an example. I like journaling every night before going to bed. I've been doing it for years every day. It's basically a habit.

However, there's days when I'm really tired and don't feel like journaling at all.

What we have here is that i don't feel like doing a task that I normally enjoy doing and this task is only "one task" as you mentioned. However, I still don't feel like doing it.

What works for me is first having a burning desire to do it. If you don't want to do something. It's most probably because this thing is not important & urgent. So work on this. For me it's accountability.

Then comes confidence. You need to be 100% certain that you can achieve the task and that you will enjoy the process.

These 2 concepts are the best to get you motivated to take action. Just think about all the tasks that you were motivated to do in the past. I guarantee you that the task involved these 2 concepts.

After all that, if you still don't feel like doing it (trust me this will happen). You need to understand that this feeling is not you. You can still take action even if you don't feel like it. This is one of the things that you need to do to become successful. Stop waiting for feeling good before taking action. That does not work.

Moreover, taking action will most probably get you motivated to take more action. The hard part is starting. So embrace the pain and take action.

    Cheers,

    C.G.

Exactly! And the sole feeling of finally doing the task you've been putting up for so long is enough to get you motivated and feel good. I myself am trying to trigger myself to get that feeling of success and ease every time I begin procrastinating so I can remind myself I shouldn't be wasting my time and so far it worked.

i have been meaning to put a post up on a thread on procrastination..but i keep saying..well i might have something to add to the next thread on procrastination ..

positive practice of procrastinating on unhealthy or low value tasks ..if you are not going to do anything that important.. when you should be doing Important things to do..put of doing any filler unimportant tasks .

now if you are intent on doing something that qualifies as entertainment ..accept that by doing that instead of something important ..you will get the joy you get from doing that entertainment thing ..while not getting the resilts from doing the important thing ..

i am hopeful that everyone reading this thread is human or at least part human ..HA!

human beings respond to incentive ...

if the reward or incentive to do the important tast ..is not greater than the tasks you are doing instead ..

either get a more intense vision that compels you to do the important task ..or just accept you are not going to do it

Procrastinating is natural for everyone, as humans we all have a habit of putting off things to do either because we don’t enjoy doing it or we are simply too lazy to work on it at that moment. But you are right however; the pain of actually doing the task is lesser than that of putting if off and stressing to finish it the next time. I tend to procrastinate over some of the works I don’t really like doing but at the end of the day, I’m still the only one who can do it and since I really need to finish it, I only end up working double time to make up for the times I put it off.
