Work Breakdown Structure

Hello All,

I wanted to share with you one of the most important tools I use to help me accomplish my goals and avoid procrastination. It's called a Work Breakdown Structure (WBS). If you have any formal background in project management, you know where I'm going.

What is a WBS?
There are a lot of pseudo official definitions for a WBS. The Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK) defines it like this:

"The process of subdividing the major project deliverables and project work into smaller, more manageable components."

Not only does the WBS allow you to see all the actionable parts of achieving a goal, but provides the capacity to associate a time frame and due date with each action. This greatly increases efficiency since you can set hard timelines for yourself and accomplishing your project goals.

Here is a perfect example of a WBS. The items in red are actually the only tasks you need to complete. By completing them you complete the higher level milestones.

GOAL: Build a website.

These are the higher milestones that must be completed in order to consider the goal accomplished:
  1. Choose a domain name.
  2. Purchase a hosting plan.
  3. Design website.
  4. Create website content.
Each one of the milestones can be broken down further into actionable items. Let's look at #4 more in depth:
  • Create website content.
    • Create logo.
      • Sketch/design draft logo.
      • Hire graphic designer to finalize logo from draft design.
    • Organize website content.
      • Identify and name all content categories.
      • Identify all static pages (contact, about, etc.)
    • Design home page.
      • Identify different sections of home page.
      • Draft home page content (optional).
    • Draft articles for launch.
      • Identify 3 article topics and with titles.
      • Write draft articles.
      • Conduct on-page SEO for all launch articles.
        • Identify keyword/keyword phrase.
        • Calculate keyword density.
        • Ensure use of keyword in title, alt tag, sub-heading and URL.
The object is to take your larger goals and drill down until you transform them into "manageable components". This is helpful for organizing your time and managing large projects that may seem insurmountable. Here are some other instances when I've used a WBS to organize my efforts:
  • Planning a wedding or vacation.
  • Planning a landscaping or in-home renovation.
  • Drafting a business plan.
  • Implementing a new technology/strategy across my website network.
The applications are endless!

I hope you add the WBS methodology to your internet marketing toolbox. You never know when it may come in handy!
