The Money is NOT In The List? But Wait There's More! ...

There's a popular saying that the money is in the list. I believe you should have a list, because it helps you build relationships, brand loyalty and repeat customers as well as other benefits.

But it's more accurate to say "The money is in Niche".

Because you have to have a niche aimed at a specific target market, First ... before your list can do you any good. I know many people who failed that had a list but it wasn't targeted to any specific niche or it was done ineffectively. They just heard "The Money is in the List and started collecting names with a weak strategy or no strategy at all.

Most brick and mortar companies don't have list at all, but the ones that last have a strong niche without exception.

So, I say "The Money Is In The Niche"

As always I invite your comments, questions or even disagreements (I'll still respect you in the morning).

    Ello The Niche Man..

So I entered your thread thinking it was gonna be a topic leading to the money is actually in the relationship with the list!

I was even more interested when I read and found that was not the case

I do agree. I've even seen someone write in a tutorial once and said you shouldnt waste to much time on niche selection because people tend to get stuck there trying to figure out what to chose and never move on to the next step.

The tutorial was great but it gave false hope and the trainer ended up with quite a few people that had selected niches but weren't making any money.

The best route would be to teach how to really do your market research to determine that the niche is profitable.

The money is in the niche... or in the relationship with your list developed in a profitable niche

Good points, many internet marketing experts make the same mistakes or over-sights you noticed. Most stress building mailing lists, but few if any mention niche research, niche development or even niche improvement all essential if you want to stay competitive in a growing market.

Personally, I really do not think that there is a correct answer to where the money really is. Lots of variables has to be factored ,in order to "mine the gold". For some people the money is in the list, for others its in the niche! Really it depends on what works for you, as in all things. Some people have a true talent to "sway the masses" these people can sell water to a whale so to speak. Some people take the route of finding great niches, and becoming "partners" with people who are expert list builders and thats when you have a winning combo! I think a lot of times we try to wear too many hats in our business, and this is what makes us mediocre in business. I am also a victim of wearing many hats, it comes along with bootstrapping a project. To really master list building, 100 percent focus needs to be on list building. The same goes for niche digging! I am sure many will disagree, but the true list building masters, or any other master know exactly where I am coming from.

I don't disagree with you. But you have to look at priorities and the stage for list building has to be set first.

I'm not sure how you build a "targeted/responsive list" without finding or zeroing in on a niche first, do you? If so, please share.

Personally.. I think with the available tools today you can find exactly where the money is. Considering that money is being spent in that market you can fit yourself into the market and start accepting some of that money.

Now.. if a person is able to sell water to a whale that's great for their business, I am of the opinion that it would be a wise business move for that person to target whales that's found themselves in toxic water.

Considering that it's a numbers game... I'm definitely of the opinion that targeting whales in toxic water has the potential for higher conversions.

Even more... wouldn't it be wise for this person to collect the whales contact information so that he / she can constantly keep in touch with this whale to supply water.

It all comes together as a part of a business model. I say find the profitable niche, sell to that niche, build a list of contacts and continue selling to them while finding different ways to reach out to persons in the market.

You don't have to do this all on your own.. you can find persons that specialize in specific areas and outsource.

List Building is still the king of making sales online (I Receive this morning an email about Amy Porterfield a FB Expert) and she say If you are not actively growing your email list with your Facebook efforts, I can confidently say that you are leaving money on the table. (This is only a example about if you are using fb to get sales)

To this point, making money online is about invite people to join your list (Any niche) if you go to Gmail you need to create a account that is bassically like a membership site and google sometime going to send you news about gmail, if you join FB, you also going to join a membership and get into their list and they can send you email, when you change any info about your profile, notifications, etc.)

So List Building is the most important task that we like internet marketers need to do online, to improve our sales.

You make many good points on the importance of building a list and I don't disagree when you say the following statement below ...

But if List Building is the King of making sales as you say. Then "Establishing or Finding a Niche is ...The King Maker". Here's Why? Because without first establishing a niche your list will not be as effective, as many marketers are discovering.

For example, take the marketer who just throws together a general list of opportunity seekers instead of ....the one who targets "web designers interested in monitizing their Bonsai tree gardening blogs" (specific niche).

One has to come first before the other can be effective, that's all I'm saying.

This is not a Niche vs. Mailing List competition. This is more like a get priorities in order reminder.

As I mentioned in post #6. I'm not sure how you build a "targeted/responsive list" without finding or zeroing in on a niche first, do you? If so, please share.
