Resources on becoming a better communicator

I'm looking for free or relatively inexpensive resources to help improve my communication skills. Not necessarily public speaking per se. But learning to communicate my thoughts better, perform better in job interviews, speak off the cuff better, etc...

I feel that because I work behind the desk alot, I don't get the chance to practice my communication skills. And it's definitely important if I want to move into a managerial or leadership role.

Any ideas?

Get out and talk to people. Volunteer on a phone help line. Help in a soup kitchen. Mix with all types of people and just talk to them. Then your confidence will grow.

I like Laurence's ideas. Over the years, I've learned that simply relaxing (that is, forgetting about making an impression) helps a lot too. I talk to people now and really don't give a hoot what they think of me. It's my message that matters. People generally call me "down-to-earth" as a result.

    Hi SG1,

I recently found some pretty good articles relating to communication and just sociability in general.

Here is a fantastic one on how to make small talk - How to Make Small Talk | The Art of Manliness

And here is another great article on developing a charismatic personality - These Specific Behaviors Will Make You More Charismatic - Starting Right Now. - The Happy Talent

Being a more social, easier-to-talk-to person is not just about your speaking skills. It is about your body language, listening, showing attention and knowledge.

Your body language conveys warmth and openess, listening allows you to expand the conversation on what they've said, attention shows that your are present and want to hear what they've got to say and knowledge allows you to open up new paths of conversation.

    Cheers, Zach.

I'm looking for a more structured approach to effective communication rather than just socializing. I've socialized my entire life. So videos, podcast, or something to that effect would help greatly.
