What kind of music do you like that gets you in a great mind set?

For me, music plays a really important part about setting up my frame of mind for the day. It can get you in a great mood instantaneously, which only amplifies what you are capable of doing.

There's a genre of music that I was introduced to over a year ago that I've absolutely fallen in love with and always gets me in a terrific frame of mind. When I watched the Sarah Brightman PBS special 'Symphony' I first heard the Italian tenor Alessandro Safina and at that moment I was hooked. The music is 'pop opera' or 'popera' as some may call it, and since then it's the only music I've listened to.

Safina has absolutely the most mesmerizing voice I've ever heard, and I've never heard anyone sing with such emotion and feeling. I have listened to him almost 24/7 for the last year and a half, and have never tired of his incredible voice. If you like Il Divo, Josh Groban, or Andrea Bocelli, listen to this amazing tenor and see if he doesn't get you in a great mood as well. You can just search YouTube and find his songs.

Some of my favorites are:
Incanto
Sarai Qui
Canto Della Terrra
Insieme A Te
I Giardini Di Marzo

Here's Sarai Qui from the PBS Special. Sarai Qui is the Italian verson of Faith Hill's song 'There You'll Be', which was a huge hit. Most of the people I've talked to like the Italian version much better than the original. What do you think?

If this isn't 'your cup of tea', what kind of music do you like?

I often listen to a variety of music like classical music, sonatas, operas, full orchestra, pop music, jazz, guitar solos, international music, rap, religious, anything and everything.
I just can't see myself only listening to one genre, I feel as if you limit yourself, if you stick to one or a few genres of music, you cheat yourself from the beautiful works of our time.

I definitely like other kinds of music, it's simply that this is the type of music that really inspires me. I mean more than once it has literally brought tears to my eyes. For myself, I'm really surprised that I still enjoy it as much as I do, and for the length of time that I have. But I love it as much today as the first day I heard it. It may change in another month, but for the time being, I just really enjoy listening to it.

It will depend on the kind of thing or task that I am doing. There are times that I don't need music at all but most of time I do listen to music. I also would prefer instrumental ones so as not to distract me by singing along instead of focusing on an article for example.

I'm primarily a gothic, black, death, and doom metal kind of guy. Marilyn Manson. Cradle of Filth. Three Inches of Blood. Into Eternity. Candlemass. I mean, when you're pushing forty and have hair down to your arse, it sort of goes with the territory.

But I also love disco, Barry Manilow, Stephen Sondheim, John Denver, Kate Bush... rocketmail009 has the right idea.

I have a lot of similar underground taste... I have several artists that constantly rotate my Top Listened list, but I think the one that takes the cake is Leaether Strip, Danish industrial/electro solo artist. I love his instrumental album - great for concentration!

    I absolutely love Sarah Brightman!

I tend to listen to calming music during work. I find that high energy music is good for an hour or so afterwords you do get a headache from all the beats thumping your brain! When working intensively one should have music that is calming as high energy music or songs tend to distract you

    My Favorite Artists are
    Chris Spheeris
    David Lanz
    Brian Eno
    Aural Planet
    New age meditative genre

Something progressive works for me: Jazz, trip-hop, broken-beat, house, pop, rock, whatever.

But i really do love to work listening to Air, Coldplay, free Jazz, instrumental old school hip-hop or deep house.

As long as it's progressive, it's just fine

I'm the exact opposite. Music keeps me going! Certain songs will keep me from working though, so I have to choose carefully.

I absolutely cannot have the TV on though, especially if it's anything on USA >

I find instrumental music to be best while I'm working. Sometimes words can grab your attention to much.

Medesky, Martin, and Wood have been prominent on my playlist lately.

well for me music is a part of my job that I can't really take away cause without music it will be very boring when you work. I listen to J-Pop, J-Rock J stands for Japanese Rock, and Pop they are really good even thou I can't understand a word that they sing. I also listen to 80's hair metal and heavy metal hehe. That one really keeps me going.

I enjoy cooking and eating well-prepared food; especially if the chef really enjoyed preparing the meal.

To me, music is the Spice that is added to your life. Spices are used to accentuate flavors, draw out new experiences from food or a particular ingredient. If you want to achieve a certain outcome with a dish, you add a certain spice or two.

I enjoy music and use it to enhance certain moods, so my tastes run from the eclectic to the mainstream (Winamp says I have over 271 days of music on my hard drives!! "Rebel Yell" is playing right now (and it's reminding me of some really GREAT experiences! ).

I listen to New Age music if I'm thinking or creating. I'll listen to more up-tempo music if I need to charge through and get things done.

  • Choosing the kind of music to listen to will depend on the characteristic that is essential in what needs to be accomplished. I find the parallelism between musical patterns and brain patterns non-coincidental. 'Mood' inspires music, and vice versa. Hence, the right music puts you in the right mood.

Say, when my task is to come up with playful idea; I must inspire my brain to tap unusual brain cell patterns. Listening to funk, acid jazz, or anything experimental in between helps me. I usually start with Incubus' Battlestar Scralatchtica that plays with the bass line and turntable. Some ambient drum-bass music will do, if I prefer something less distracting.

When I'm up to plotting marketing strategies, I like listening to fierce music: metal or hardcore. But I prefer the more technical ones that exhibits some standard jazz techniques. One mainstream act famous in this 'math metal' genre would be Mudvayne. "Crush the enemies" is my mantra.

Need to write anything insightful? Try soulful music. If you wanna sound like your happy, pop in some Bob Marley. When you're done working, settle down with indie folk or spoken word.

At the end of the, no play list from any music guru can work for all of us. Define the output that you want, then the music that you need presents itself.
