Please help me find my True Passion in Life!

Hello everyone.

I have been on the path of personal growth for the past 5 years. From what I have learned, I know that having goals and passions are very important to live fulfilled and happy. I have came up with a few BIG goals for my life that sets a direction on where I plan to go.

However, here is my issue right now. I do feel passionate about these goals ... but I don't feel them so strong that I want to get up everyday immediately just to work on them. Instead, I'd have to think and visualize about them for a bit and come to conclusion that: Yes, I love to do these things and they will surely improve my life and others in the future. They are things that are undeniably GOOD to do in life.

I guess having these goals are very good already. But I just feel like I want something that's even STRONGER - something that can drive me out of my bed every morning, think about it all the time, and cannot wait to do it. I do get THIS excited about many things in life but they're temporary projects - not a long lasting GOAL or PASSION. I would like to find ONE thing ... a lasting goal or passion that I can be strongly passionate about.

Please share your thoughts and tips. Anything will be appreciated. Thanks.

    If you make all your temporary or short terms goal relevant to your longer terms goal you may just get there. Most people work with short, medium and long term goals because focusing on the long term goals alone can be intimidating.

      Here's what to do:

      1. Take out a blank sheet of paper or open up a word processor where you can type (I prefer the latter because it's faster).

      2. Write at the top, "What is my true purpose in life?"

      3. Write an answer (any answer) that pops into your head. It doesn't have to be a complete sentence. A short phrase is fine.

      4. Repeat step 3 until you write the answer that makes you cry. This is your purpose.

        I know it's meant to offer some good advice..

        But the underlying presupposition here is that if it doesn't make you cry it isn't your life purpose.

        really?

        according to who?

        and what if several things make me cry.. do I have multiple life purposes...

        oh wait...

        is it even important to have a LIFE purpose?

        Have fun

    Sometimes I go through a period of "Analysis Paralysis". I'm really guilty of that and then nothing gets done. I find if I just do it, then I learn. The more I do the more I learn what direct I want to go in.

    Someone once told me this and I'm sure it's a quote from someone one out there but I don't know who.

    "God can't steer a parked car."

    I used to think there should be one goal, I now think that is a falsehood.

    The individual goals change and return at times; IMO its better to take productive action on what energizes you in shorter time frames.

    Think about Benjamin Franklin, he did many things but focused on one thing at a time.

    one thing that jumps out... is the very lack of balance:

    * having goals and passions is VERY important...
    * a few BIG goals
    * but I don't feel them so STRONG
    * get up EVERY day IMMEDIATELY to work on them
    * that are UNDENIABLE GOOD ...
    * but I just want something that's even STRONGER
    * can DRIVE ME out of bed EVERY morning,
    * think about it ALL the time
    * canNOT wait to do
    * get THIS excited ..
    * they are TEMPORARY
    * not LONG LASTING
    * find ONE thing
    * a LASTING goal
    * be STRONGLY passionate about..

    .. you are setting yourself up for failure...

    Read this very carefully because I want you to get this very clearly:

    ...to get moving you do NOT need true, high ,strong, excited, long lasting, passions, .. BUT you need to get your emotional crap out of the way ...

    READ THAT AGAIN

    If you have to wait until you're highly passionate about something to get anything done... chances are great that your life is gonna be over by then..

    why .. because you're emotional attachments are stopping you dead in your tracks from even realizing what your passion(s) might be.

    People who get things done don't have any emotions standing in their way.
    what you are trying to do is to OVERPOWER your emotions and limiting beliefs by having this exuberant passion.

    It will ONLY work, as you already are experiencing, for a very short period of time, for some different reasons.. one is that this HIGHLY exuberant PASSION, is NOT what you are USED to be experiencing in your daily state.. so this pops you out of your range of daily emotions.. which will only take a few days to stabilize again.. and then you're ****ed .. because the only way you get moving is by gettin in this overpowering state. Another thing is that overpowering these limiting feelings and beliefs does NOT desolve them.. you are only denying them for a little while.. until they rear their ugly heads again..

    that's why affirmations, visualisations, positive thinking really isn't working

    and this happens to you over and over again..

    Start clearing out the crap and you'll be able to notice what your passions are..and when you notice that it's an overpowering passion.. you know that you're just fooling yourself.

    oh btw STOP visualizing, and START taking action

    Have fun

    Hi yic17,

    I don't have much to add, because these guys have given you quite a handful of useful tips to help you target your ultimate passion.

    The other way around this issue would be to ask yourself, what frustrates you the most and what gets you mad to the point of losing your mind:

    1. What kind of injustice can't you bear to see?
    2.What type of situations, problems would you eradicate in a heart beat if you had all the money in the world?
    3. What is your red button? In other words, you are a pretty easy going guy, but when someone presses this "red button" you lose it!

    Just adding to the rich pool of tips!

    A great book I'd recommend on the subject is Finding Your Own North Star by Martha Beck. I was very moved by her previous book Expecting Adam which tells the true story of how the circumstances surrounding the birth of her first child turned her life around which ultimately led her to becoming a life coach.

    Her North Star book is very good at helping you to dig down deep to find your true passion.

    One simple exercise to try is this: What is something that you do where you don't look at the clock?

    If anything, I think by doing some of the simple exercises in the book it will help you to get out of the analysis paralysis that affects many of us.

    As Martha Beck says, "Just take turtle steps." That's even smaller than "baby steps" and as long as you keeping moving slowly toward your goal you'll get there.

    Hope this helps!

      Will,

      Besides presupposing it's God's task for me on this planet, and that it's uniquely me, and it's somewhere deep in my heart.. it really doesn't tell me HOW exactly i'm gonna find my True Passion in Life

      So help me out here, what I'm missing...

      Have fun

    yic17,

    To find the passion of your life, you will have to look inside you. Explore yourself and see what you love doing. Is there something that can make you jump out of bed? Is there something that you look forward to? What do you crave for? What is it that makes you lose track of your time? What inspires you?

    Answer these questions. Look for answers deep within you.

    Once you discover your passion, make it the purpose of your life and set goals.

    Don't just look at the goals in front of you. Think about the purpose your goals are supporting. If the purpose is strong enough, nothing can stop you from achieving your goals.

    Say, your goal is to earn $100,000 in six months and you need this money for your son's education, wouldn't you do everything possible to achieve that? It may not always be about money, but your purpose should push you towards your goals.

    Make the purpose behind the goals strong enough for you to "want" to work towards achieving them.
