"Are Dreams Really Important?"

"The person who would like to make his dreams come true MUST STAY AWAKE."-- Richard Wheeler, Rotarian

I don't want to speak for Mr. Wheeler, but this is MY interpretation of this quote. I think dreams are very powerful. The light bulb would not have been invented without a dream. We would not have the U.S. Constitution without a vision or a dream of freedom. There are countless other examples that have made a significant impact on all of our lives.

Caution!!! If you keep dreaming with NO Action...it remains a dream instead of a reality.

DREAM BIG
MAKE A PLAN
TAKE DAILY CONSISTENT ACTION (REPEAT)

When you hit a wll...figure out a way to dig through it, go around it, or climb it...Then Remember Why that dream was important to you in the first place. If your dream is not big enough, that wall will surely defeat you!

Don't live in your dreams...make them a reality and enjoy the process!

    Nick, good subject.

Our society today, for many, has become so jumbled that many folks lose focus of what their dreams were yesterday. They see a report of someone else who's made a bundle of money, see a new car, somebody moving into new, fancy house, et al, that their dreams are changed literally overnight.

They lose focus that God presents, everyday upon the horizon of the sunrise, choices and opportunities to create, hold and achieve dreams. God then lays out exactly what must be achieved to live our dreams. Then, it's up each of us, through our willingness to perform the tasks at hand and our commitment to our dreams to follow through.

Nick, what are you calling dreams? In my knowledge of Edison he invented the light bulb because he was driven by the media to do so. It was first accidentally invented by an English Chemist, Dalton, who put forward the idea but could not progress it further as it required a special 'wick'. Edison, after thousands of tries, finally found the one that worked.

Christopher Columbus could have been dreaming of sailing around the world except that it appears that the Chinese and Arabians all knew that the world was round. As they traded with Venice, his home town, he must have heard this and merely wanted to fulfill his ambition of proving it to the ignorant, stubborn, religious fundamentalists who ruled his country and tried to stop him.

The US Bill of Rights as I understand it was put forward by Thomas Jefferson who kept slaves and even bore children by them. He used logic not dreams to present a document to a new nation on how people should live and what benefits they should derive for their efforts. He actually did some archaeological surveys on Indian mounds and such to discover that the native people of America were civilised. This was not a dream but a logical look at what was around him to resolve some of the mysteries.

Perhaps you can elaborate on your thoughts of what you consider a dream?

      Norma,

You were possibly thinking of the English chemist, Sir Humphrey Davy, rather than the English chemist John Dalton.

In 1802, Davy successfully demonstrated that if electric currents were passed through thin strips of metal to white heat light would be produced.

By the time Edison looked for a solution to producing a commercially practical lamp in the 1870s, more than twenty inventors had produced incandescent electric lights. By the 1870s, economic demands and improved production technologies combined to make a successful light bulb commercially feasible if they could find the right filament - one that produced adequate light and did not burn out too quickly.

October 21, 1879 is considered the usual date for the invention of the first commercially practical light bulb when the filament in Edison's new lamp burnt out after producing light continuously for more than two days.

Edison had expanded his research laboratory at Memlo, New Jersey in 1877, adding a machine shop, an office and a research library. He increased staff from 12 to over 60 as the whole lighting system from the generator to the bulb came under his scrutiny. In the process, he created a team approach to invention and assembled a research team that brought together finance, skilled workers, tools and material; a method to research and development that continued with companies such as General Electric, which grew out of the corporation Edison founded. He also set up mass production plants to produce the bulbs in quantity.

Whether it can be considered Edison had a "dream" perhaps depends on what is considered a dream. There can be no denying that he had a remarkable sense of purpose and was unrelenting in his pursuit - some might think, useful qualities. That his vision, or desired outcome, was shared by others does not minimize his achievement. With the advantage of historical observation, it would seem he was more interested in being first to a commercial solution rather than unique.

Incidentally, the modern incandescent light bulb is very similar to Edison's original, with tungsten filaments used instead of the original carbonized cotton thread and gas in the bulb replacing the original vacuum.

It's no surprise that the methods employed by "super-humans" like Edison are a fascinating subject for the members of this forum. Here's what Steven K. Scott reports in his book "Simple Steps to Impossible Dreams""Simple Steps to Impossible Dreams" :
For example, when Edison got an idea for some device that did not exist, he wrote it down with as much detail as he could muster. Then, before he even considered what it would take to create such an invention, he began to imagine all of the potential long-term and global ramifications that could result from it. In fact, he would devise vast concepts and schemes of what could be accomplished from such an invention and all of its potential derivatives. In other words, he would raise his sights to the moon and beyond. And he would do all of this visualizing and shooting for the moon before he would even try to figure out if such an invention was even possible.
I've purposely emboldened the most striking part of that description. When I read that, I began to understand how people like Edison treated the 'obstacles' that hold so many of the rest of us back.

Yes, that kind of romantic dribble is what appeals to the non thinkers. Its easy to be caught up in make-believe rather than 'thinking', which requires a degree of brain power.

Hi Norma; I think it's just semantics. Substitute the word "goal" for dream and we're probably on the same wavelength.

          I like these quotes:

Obstacles are those frightful things you see when you take your eyes off your goal. - Henry Ford
Never laugh at anyone's dreams. People who don't have dreams don't have much. - Anonymous
          And my favorite:

Goals are dreams with deadlines. - Diana Scharf Hunt
I believe the point of this is that people need to have dreams to be able to live, otherwise they are just existing. Dreams are what make people become successful, they are what make people do great things and invent great things.

Edison invented the first commercially viable incandescent light bulb. Others existed (in theory, that worked very briefly, etc.), but he had the "dream" to make it readily available to the public. Perhaps it is semantics, but I would think anyone can figure out what the OP meant. Let's not over analyze.

Some people have no dreams. Others only have dreams, but don't realize them. And still others have dreams and turn them into goals. But the very few turn their goals into success.

Dreams are important. It gives some people a positive future vision that even if they do not attain it, it gives them the will to go on. Dreams give some people a reason to continue. Dreams give some people a reason to live. Dreams makes some people happy; they may not be the only source of happiness for everyone, but for some they are.

            Nicely put, Scott.

However, while some may believe they have no dreams, I doubt that this is true.

If we substitute "want" for dream this can be seen more clearly. It seems to me that everyone is constantly faced with situations that they find range in appeal from extremely attractive to bloody awful.

It is in our nature that when we perceive the world we have feelings about it in some way. A beautiful landscape may evoke admiration, calm, and tranquility; the horrors of the battlefield may stir fear, anger, determination and desperation; being rejected by a lover may stir sadness, loneliness, inadequacy, uncertainty, anger and loss of power.

In every situation where we are faced with what we do NOT want - in that moment we come to realize what we DO want. There is value in perceiving those things in our environment which displease us in that the contrast makes us more keenly aware of what we DO want.

However, what presently exists that we do not like can be overwhelming - because it is physically real it clearly has great credibility. It attracts our constant attention and stirs our emotional responses. In doing so, present events shift our attention away from what we do want and we can lose sight of it, expecting that, when we open our eyes, we will see what we do not want. Naturally, what presently exists will meet this expectation.

A friendless person has an implied want in a lonely world - to have friends.

An impoverished person burdened with debt has an implied want - to be free of debt.

A person who is feeling unloved has an implied want - to be in a loving relationship.

Importantly, when we are more strongly aware of this lack we are also more strongly aware of what we do want and, too, are more keenly aware of our sense of power - or its lack.

At this point, our sense of inner power "kicks in" and we are alerted to the outcome that is desired, this focus providing a surge of energy which provides drive and determination to reach what we want. The focus also stimulates ideas and makes us more alert to opportunities. Focused action moves us forward.

However, if our sense of inner power is blocked by thoughts of failure, we experience feelings of doubt and inadequacy, maybe even hopelessness. The accompanying frustration and powerlessness can also lead to not only feelings of sadness and loss but also anger, despair and aggression.

As our sense of inner power tries to reassert itself but continues to be blocked we may reassert it in other ways that are open to us to reclaim those feelings - acting vindictively towards someone who has dumped us; using a key to scrape the side of a car owned by someone who has slighted us; destroying a public telephone owned by a society that looks down on us; cheating on a partner who has diminished us, and so on.

In these instances, we have assigned power over our feelings to others but inwardly are driven to restore it to ourselves, to take steps that return this sense of control over our lives.

As our wants, or dreams, become focused we are in a position to be able to improve our lives by taking steps that we believe will move us forward. However, also important is that 'can do' feeling of being able and competent to reach our goals, however distant, and even though the path may not, at this stage, be clear and the right way is uncertain.

With this confidence that we are able to succeed, we'll continue to search until a solution is found. Without it, our future prospects will look as bleak as those that currently face us; perhaps worsened by fear, paralysis and inaction.

Yes, i believe dreams are important if they're not daydreams.

People have ups and downs in their lives. When they have met something difficult, they need a better image in their mind to go over what suffers.

Hi, I think dreaming IS very important. Especially DAY dreaming... ! Keep your focus on your dreams, what you are aiming for. The more you have your mind in the things you WANT, the closer you are getting them. LIVE in your dreams, touch them, feel them, taste, hear, see them... And VERY soon, you are what and where you want to be.
We just need the reminders, don't we...

Dreams are the essential ingredient in all success! Big call sure but think about it, is a dream nothing other then what is not Real in our so called existing reality at the present moment. So when ever our mind is conceiving of anything in the future is a dream.
THis is the key turning over in the car, it is then up to ourselves to push the accelerator.

Problem with most of us is we start the car and push the accelerator and then have another "dream" and turn the wheel or stop the car to think about it.

Without a dream, man will perish and we would not be sitting on this forum as this was at one stage nothing other then someones dream.

Fortunately they pushed the accelerator and kept heading in the direction of creating a new reality out of a so called dream!

Every one is an exceptional dreamer but only few are both exceptional dreamers who create reality from dreams.

Without dreams you really aren't going anywhere, you are simply just floating around. All the inventions in the world took a dream, all the achievements took a dream, and all these were driven by action.
It is therefore important to dream big and act and they most definitely will come to pass.

Dreams are what governed the world of achievement. Every worthwhile act of man always begins with a dream. For example, an architect first makes construction in his mind before reproducing it on paper for the builders to pick it up. Similarly, a surgeon usually pictures the organ before he moves in with his knife.

The year 2008 is barely 3 months to its end. The question is, "what do you dream about your business? What size of business do you anticipate in 2009? Have you written your dream down?

Thanks very much for your comments, John. It's good to hear from a serious explorer.

Swan's achievements were also amazing, and it was interesting that he did not wish to get bogged down in legal conflict with Edison and agreed to share the patent rights with him - Swan having the UK rights and Edison the American.

They were both forward thinkers, eager to pursue their dreams, later merging their common purpose, to form Ediswan.

These, and the other individuals studied by Steven K Scott, are at the "top end of the scale" and serve as great role models who actively pursue their dreams and are driven to implement them, unlike those who have Walter Mitty as their role model.

There is immense value to be had in studying successful role models, something I'm presently writing about privately.

It's also valuable to appreciate that in achieving their success they were not daunted by the gap, indeed the gulf, which lay between where they were and where they wanted to be. Many, if not most, want to see a bridge over that gulf before they will take the important early steps toward their dream.

Others - the Swans, Edisons, Spielbergs, Gates, etc - don't lose their focus and hold it even when faced with uncertainty (also have a look at how George Lucas got the early "Star Wars" movies off the ground and how he grabbed the merchandising rights the studios didn't want!).

Not seeing a clear way ahead causes many to give up. Holding focus and having confidence that there IS a way - able to handle the anxiety of uncertainty - meant that when their focus stimulated ideas and opportunities for moving forward they were able take the many small steps required - constantly testing the path - which eventually bridged the gulf.

This holds true also in our daily lives on a smaller scale.

As well, have you noticed a common refrain that often emerges in the public comments of highly successful internet marketers - they are constantly testing new possibilities to see what works AND they are open to new ideas in the area that interests them (their area of focus)!

I'll let a famous role model for our children have the last word:

"A dream is a wish your heart makes"
      - Cinderella
      (from the movie)

And we all know how she ended up!

Absolutely! I can only imagine that the difference between the person who sees a 'gulf' and the person who sees a mere 'gap' is a belief in one's own abilities to successfully reach the other side.

One of the most striking examples is given by Napoleon Hill in TAGR, where Henry Ford wants his engineers to produce a V8 engine block as a single casting. For months the engineers came back to Ford to tell him that despite their best efforts, it just wasn't possible. "Nonsense!", Ford is supposed to have replied, "I want it, and I'll have it!". After 18 months of Ford refusing to take 'no' for an answer, the engineers gave him his one-piece engine block.

Back to Edison, again. "Young man, you don't understand how the world works. I haven't failed 10,000 times. I've successfully identified 10,000 light bulb filaments that don't work!"

Culturally, we associate dreams with childishness. "Make-believe" is something that we expect children to do; adults are supposed to be "realistic". Failure to do this means that we are accused of living in a "dream world" or "cloud cuckoo land".

And yet the people that we admire the most are the ones who are best known for dreaming. Einstein said "Imagination is more important than knowledge". And what was Martin Luther King's catchphrase?

No need to elaborate on what a dream is because it is different for everybody.

It simply represents hope. Hope that there is something more to what is at hand, the things we see. To dream is to have faith.

Dreams are of two types.. first one is realistic one and the other fantasy (baseless).

Now Dream (obviously realistic one) is what makes me working and moving further.

Absolutely! Dreams are important to make or mar a life. They are generally futuristic.

Good dreams that are followed up with concrete plans and consistent action will result in success. On the other hand bad dreams without corresponding action to address the bad dreams will also mess up one's life. The question is how does one address bad dreams?

Bad dreams, like good dreams, are indications of future happenings which can either be accepted or rejected. For instance, a dream of wretchedness or poverty can be rejected and counteracted by drawing up a plan accompanied by concrete action that would result in economic empowerment. This would, in turn, negate the bad dreams.

The first crucial place to take this decision is your mind. Hence, you have to tune your mind to whatever you want your dreams to do for you.

    Dreams are important.

It's what sets your intentions in my opinion.

    Intention -> Action -> Persistence -> Success

That's the way I see it.
