Is an realist just another way to say a pessimist?

Think of this in relation to growing a business

a realist will tell you how they see things..as reality and with little expectation for a change in that reality..

a pessimist .. tends to expect things to get worse or basd things to happen ..

you can be both ..but one doesn't mean you are the other ..

Is the glass half full or half empty? That's a typical question and has numerous answers.

    "Realist" implies listening to others.

Creating change in your life often requires NOT listening to your peers--who are in your old comfort zone or lower, and will hold you down.

If you want to achieve outside your previous range, you need to do behaviors that are outside of what you have done before.

Understanding that, who are you to say what is "realistic" for yourself or not? The truth is, you have no idea what you are capable of (or not.)

Set targets, and create plans to achieve them. Set goals within those plans, and develop action steps to reach those goals. Then do the work.

If your action steps don't reach your goals within your specified timeline, then re-write the plans and their action steps using what you've learned in the meantime.

  • All shades of -ists think they have the future figured.

But evry time I tried steppin' there, I ended up in Now.

That's as real as things get, an' I see no point bein' pessimistic about it.

I enjoyed each of your responses!! Quite enlightening to hear new opinions .

The reason why this is fascinating is because many lack to feel or see the power of positive thinking. To say that your realist is recognizing more than just what is then ultimately results in the self-imposed creation of fear, which is more simply put: pessimism.Let me propose this now in response: to say the glass is half-full or half-empty then is putting out that there is scarcity and limited abundance. Why should we confine ourselves within a glass? Thats self-imposed limitations.

    We are abundant beings!!

it's not so much lack of positive thinking.. it is fearing the wrong things..and worrying to no end about things with little risk of happening..while most people biggest dangers in todays modern world ..come from what they put in their mouth ..

as far as limitations go ..that is part of playing as a human playing within limits .. but as the beings we are we have the power to expand those limits.. but most people don't even get close to where those limits are .. they stop based on what they could do a long time ago..and never test the bounderies again..

before a pilot gets his license or re certifies their license.. i believe a big part of the test is what to do if the engine fails ..

if you live where it gets cold and snows..it may be good to have a wood stove in your home and wood to burn and some food stored ..in case power gets knocked out during a heavy snow storm ..

real self esteem and real confidence come from being prepared for and knowing what to do if things go wrong or your plans don't go well ..

as far as the glass half full half emty ..or half full ..as the watress or bartender would ask .ready for another or is that it

What is realistic to one person may differ from the next.

Therefore, it's about the subjective scope of the perceiver.

Yes - reality is what you perceive to be real. Everyone sees things a bit differently, sometimes very differently. So a realist is just a person who is paying attention to how they think things are, based on their own perception. This seems perfectly logical.

A pessimist is seeing things in an illogical and negative manner.

Awesome awesome awesome responses! This is exactly it - if at the core of who we really are, is to be an optimist and positive, anything other than that would be pessimistic. We should always stay within the gap or vortex by staying positive and optimistic with understanding CERTAIN things do happen in the world yet that should not stray us outside of the gap or vortex.
