I used to refresh my mail often.

Since, I've switched to SMTP, it comes in automatically when it hits the server so I only need to do a quick glance.

If I'm super strict, with my head buried into a project, I may not even glance.

Yep. A lot of people are looking for BIG THINGS and BIG MODIFICATIONS that are supposed to lead to success.

Little do they know that small tweaks like keeping EMAIL CHECKING to 3 times per day leads to BETTER RESULTS.

It's all about the PARETO PRINCIPLE-20% of the stuff we do... accounts for 80% of our results.

well at least have two email accounts..one for customer contacts ..and the other one that get filled up with all the offers you get because from getting on lots of other people lists when checking out products ..

it's easy enough to have the tab to the customer email account open ..so the counter changes when you get a mail..

Very true, you can't be a popcorn brain and expect cash to just roll in. Someone can be working a lot but not necessarily be productive.

One thing I found helps is that I only check my emails at certain times of the day: 9am, 1pm, and 8pm. Otherwise I don't even glance at it. Same goes for social media, that's a HUGE distraction nowadays.

Identify the tasks that will most impact your business today, and then don't get up until they're finished.

It's not something you do when you have nothing else better to do.

It is a JOB.

As in, you NEED to do it and you MUST do it.

I have been guilty of not treating this like how a business should be treated.

Maybe one of the disciplines needed more than others. I think maybe because it's not in a "normal" company environment where I may be in trouble with the "boss" if I don't finish a particular task on time.

Hobbyists don't have to focus... cuz hey, it's a hobby.

with the smart phones and stuff it is hard enough for bosses to keep their employes focused on work.. texting or chatting on the phone or looking up facebook on phones while they are at work and on company time

you are probably shortening your life span and causing currently undiagnosed health problems with so much media stimulation ,,

Good post, I've found writing a list of 3 tasks to complete each day and focusing on them helps me get a lot more done. Having a list of 20 leads to me having 20 half finished tasks.

You're right, OP. Just close everything and get back to work.
I take one hour to eat and check my emails/Facebook and all. Then, I have to get my arse up again to work harder. lose time = lose money. Period.
