Mindmapping Changed My Life!

Hey everyone!

In the past few months, I have started creating mindmaps to organize my different marketing campaigns and it has made an incredible difference.

I also use mindmaps to organize all of the information that I learn from products, seminars, etc... This helps me to see the big picture and start immediately taking action on what's most important.

I use a free piece of mindmapping software called Freemind and it works great.

Anyone else here use mindmaps?

I would love to hear about your experiences with them and how you use them.

I've tried using mindmaps for speeches, articles, brainstorming sessions, copywriting, and other areas, but it doesn't seem to benefit me. Everyone who uses the techniques loves it, but I don't think much of it. Maybe I'm doing it wrong.

Same here- it's probably just one of those techniques that works great for some people and not for others.

I don't see how a mindmap is much different from a list, which I can write anywhere with no software needed.

Same problem here too. I make lists and outlines like there's no tomorrow. One thought leads into another and I can crank out a lot of planning with little to no effort. Using OneNote, I can even rope off sections and drag/drop them to another area if I want to restructure and reorder things.

Mindmaps on the other hand, feel cluttered, huge, and... I don't know... clunky maybe. Give me colors and shapes to play with on top of it and I completely lose the content I was trying to organize. I end up working on the many ways to make it "pretty"

A mindmap has a hierarchical structure, and hierarchical structures are all around us. For example:
        • a company (company splits into divisions and each division into departments)
        • a supermarket (supermarket splits into departments and each department into sections)
        • a book (book -> chapters, each chapter -> paragraphs)
        • a music CD (album -> tracks, each track -> verses and choruses)
People can take advantage of this sequential structure to lay out business plans (plan -> sections -> paragraphs), goals (main goal -> major activities -> sub-tasks) or web-sites (site -> sections -> pages).

However, a list only has a "start-to-finish" sequential structure (the order of which must be re-written if a change is needed) and all of its items are given equal status (so the difference between a broad goal and a particular sub-task cannot be easily recognised).

I agree that pen and paper are more "at hand" and direct than a computer application, but many people still mindmap with a pen and paper!

  • I do the exact same thing with Freemind. I also use it for when launching any new website as a massive mindmap checklist. I love the little graphics at a glance I can see any sticking points I'm having, where I am currently at and what I have completed and still see the big picture all at once. I think its great and for anyone who is having difficulty with it just stick with it and play with it. Don't force it to work just let it happen. It took me quite some time to start getting the hang of it to the point where I was using mindmapping almost daily.

I use mindmapping all the time to get my ideas and projects organized. It works for any project, whether it's for online business or for organizing a Super Bowl party. BUT, I do it with pen and paper.

I've tried several mindmapping software programs, but they slow me down. I've found they make me shift focus from getting the project oganized to getting the software to do what I want. So for me, mindmapping software gets in the way when I'm actually in the process of thinking things out.

The software programs are great for presentation, though. Mind maps are a really clear way to communicate logical ideas and processes. So sometimes I transfer my pen-and-paper mind map to mindmapping software when I want to share it with other people, or keep it for long-term use.

We sell businesses, and use mindmaps through the entire negotiation process. Part of MMs are used for the seller, while other parts for the buyer.

Strategies are mapped and planned in advance.

All our meeting agendas are in the form of mindmaps.

I learned the technique at school about 100 years ago, and have used it ever since.

We use Mind Manager which allows us to create templates for repeat processes and sub processes.

Can you guys give me a little outline of what Mindmapping actually is?
Did most of you read a book about it and then look for software, or
use paper and pencils to implement it.

My point is that you must have learned of the concept somewhere.

        Many thanks,

I love mind maps being mainly visual it works really well for me to flow with ideas and if I jump to a different component of the project mentally whilst doing the map you just add another branch and keep going.
So for anyone like me where the mind jumps all over the place instead of following a logical syntax it is extremely beneficial.

I also really like Steve's idea about mind mapping with colored pens and legal pad. I normally use the computer, but I think putting pen to paper would help generate even more ideas.

I have been using mindmapping for more than 30 years. The first time I saw it I thought it was a joke! But then the guy doing it explained what it was to me and I have used it ever since.

I use it for all kinds of projects from writing, business planning, event planning, etc. It's great and I highly recommend it. I just use paper, pen and colored pencils . . . and do most of my mind maps in an artist sketch book. but I will give the program a go.

Thanks for the post and the reminder. It's great.

For me mindmaps are the only way to go. I can better see, flow, relationships and connections. I use them for organizing, scheduling, writing, planning and idea brainstorming.

Mindmapping just seems to work better for me, than traditional outlines.

I experimented with using mind maps back in the day, and for some reason it never really clicked with me. It seems clearly superior to be able to look at your project lists and see how everything connects to everything else, but for some reason I found looking at the whole web of ideas at once kind of confusing.

I think that the "connectedness" of all the ideas on a mind map is exactly why I don't like it: when things are listed out in bullet points, all of the ideas and tasks feel separate, which makes it easier for me to focus on each thing individually.

Just a note to anyone who has tried using mind maps before: if you didn't have success with it, it's not because you're doing something wrong, you probably just have a style of thinking that isn't compatible with mind mapping.

mind maps do help you to clear your ideas out and structure it so that you can follow your actions day by day and when you draw it with different colors, it actually help you to visualize what needed to be done so that you won't miss a thing.

It's great to hear you are having fun with mindmaps. I've always been a doodler. In school my teachers kept telling me off for drawing mini mindmaps onto my school exercise books, but this never stopped me from doing it again.

I have tried a range of software to do this - some free and others paid, but still prefer a blank piece of paper the best. Like you, I have found that mindmaps help me to focus on the tasks that need to be done.

I didn't understand the benefit of Mind Mapping for the longest time, I messed around with it and thought, "eh, I could just write an outline, same thing". Now that I'm doing videos though, there's specific info I want to include, not a lot of time to do it in, and sometimes the order of flow isn't that clear. Mind Maps make it a lot easier to plot out.

Good thread, and rightly so. Mind mapping has to be one of the most powerful tools you can use in just about anything, ranging from planning, to goals, to projects etc...

I've read quiet a bit about it, and believe it or not, Charles Darwin used a similar strategy to mind mapping to help him with the theory of evolution. That's not something you hear everyday :p. I think Tony Buzan mentioned this, can't seem to remember.

But all in all, massive technique.

I'm a true believer in the saying, "when the student is ready the teacher appears."

Several years ago I attended a management class where the instructor used a mind map as the agenda for the class. Every participant's desired takeaway was added to the mind map and the instructor taught on each of the ideas generated in addition to the prepared sections. The mind map enhanced the outcome of the class in a way that I had never witnessed.

I had not considered its application for my business.....until now. Thanks very much for sharing the idea.

    Cheers,
    Alex

    Hi Kim,

    Mindmapping does do wonders.

I started putting mindmapping on overdrive when I got promoted at my day job. My boss has the habit of doing this, too, so I sort of got the habit from him.

He referred to it as "visualization" but when I dug further into it (organization) of things, I found it was actually the exercise of mindmapping.

From there, things snowballed and have been using it since. It does help put coherence into a lot of things and perspective.

I come from a corporate background - lots of stuff to deal with so the mindmapping helps get things organize in prioritization and action.

Great share on the software. Thanks.

My favorite way to use mind maps is to create mind maps of books I read. If the book is especially meaty I make a mind map by hand of each chapter and then at the end combine them into one mind map on the computer. I keep the mind map tucked inside the book for easy reference.

I also use mind maps for projects. I've used bubbl.us and Mindmeister but look forward to checking out Freemind and Xmind.

        Hi

I agree; Mind Maps are great for storing a lot of information in a way which makes it very easy to retrieve - especially for later use. Books we read may remain fresh in our minds after a day or two, but after weeks and months, we often forget the main points. Mind Maps help enormously with this.

Thanks for all the great posts in this thread. Very exciting information.

Based on a couple of folks' recommendations, I bought one of Tony Buzan's books - he has many, but the one I bought is one of his originals - called 'The Mind Map Book'.

Ordered it from Amazon a few days ago and it just arrived today! I'm going to delve into it and begin to learn the technique he teaches before I 'graduate' to a software implementation.

I've been using mindmaps for about a year now. I like it for the fact that I can get a real good visual on paper for what I see in my mind. It's great to then use to show others.

When I have an idea, I buy a poster board and begin to put it into pictures. My work room is full of them.

I've started my kids on them for their school projects

Organizing what I learn from courses and seminars is a great tip! I am going to start doing that. I have just recently started using them for brain storming and they have help my productivity a lot.

I love mindmaps. I've tried several different alternatives, but I always fall back to Mindmeister.

I mind map. I have tried the software, but it goes quicker on a big lecture size piece of paper and sharpie pens.

Mind mapping is the only way to fly. It's the only way I can clearly see my whole plan, any holes I may have in it and rearrange it in order that steps should be done.

I use Freemind to help organize my SEO efforts when building link magnets. I also use it when I need to write content, which is something I almost always outsource.

    Kim,

I've always used mindmapping. Recently started doing flowcharts too.

It doesn't only keep your mind organised, it will also give a good overview of business and ie. campaigns. You can also use it to find constraints in processes and to devide responsibilities and tasks to outsourcers or employees.

The way mindmaps combine both the 'helicopter' and the 'frog' view into one file makes it an unmissable tool in any business.

I've created some topics, with examples:

I've been using mind maps too, but i prefer to do it on paper & use colored pens sometimes. I find it helps streamline my thinking. This is an ongoing process, the more I use it, the better. I'm going to try my hand at freemind.

I've used Mindmaps for years, and have always found them useful.

Like summer07, I use paper. An A3 sketchpad, and a pencil. A computer screen and software just gets in the way.

Most people who try the concept and find it lacking are missing a point or two. They're just using it as a glorified Powerpoint page. Read one of Buzan's books and let your mind go. Then practice the idea. It really does work.

I agree...that's why we'll be holding on to the premium property MindMaps.tv for quite a while ! If anyone gets bored I'd also really recommend checking out the work of Tony Buzan who has popularized this form of learning. It really is an ideal way to get both hemispheres of the brain working together for high impact creativity and business problem solving. I've a whole host of free mindmaps that anyone here is welcome to...

I had never heard about mindmapping until I read an unrelated post a couple of days ago. Did a search and found this thread. I downloaded Xmind today and tried it for the first time - in 15 minutes I had a mindmap that outlined different ways to make money that had been languishing in my head for the last year, and now I am making a separate mindmap for each of those. My mind jumps from one thing to another, so being able to sit down, focus, and visualize the thoughts that have been in my head was incredible! I'm sure that I am just scratching the surface, as I have never mindmapped before and haven't read any books, but I already feel more focused and can't wait to see where my mind takes me with these maps. Thanks for the suggestions!
