Top 10 Things That SUCK About Being A 9 to 5'er

10. Rush Hour - ever dread the hour long morning commute, or the 'mean muggin' on public transportation because that middle-aged guy didn't get enough doses of caffiene or they're toasted from the night before having being self- medicated to drown out the fact that the next morning the same routine begins all over again.

Giving the guy who cut you off 'the finger' was about the only exercise you get all day before plopping down in your chair, signing your life away for a check.

9. Having More Than One "Boss" -- ...because EVERYBODY enjoys being reprimanded by the same asshat over n' over again for the smallest mistakes because they themselves are bored to tears and need a little excitement to spice up their otherwise mundane work day.

8. The 9 to 5 Myth -- whoever came up with the concept with the concept of '9 to 5' are lying through their teeth!

...try 8:30 to 6:30 if you're lucky, NOT including rush hour traffic both ways. There's always the project that needs to be done last minute or an important mandatory meeting in the wee hours of the morning.

Bullshit.

7. The Ass Kissing Game -- How much butt you kiss on a regular basis determines how far you go up the corporate ladder.

Of course, the higher up that ladder you are, the more you stand to lose and the higher your chances you fall.

6. Making Too Much Money -- sounds contradictory, but think about it.

If you're living on a single income that pays most of your expenses, you're now "trapped" in that job because odds are your living expenses are matched nearly dollar for dollar to what you earn weekly.

The prospect of leaving this job doesn't occur to you in spite of the soul sucking experience of giving 40+ hours of your life away for nothing in the end but a shiny fake gold watch, a pat on the back, MAYBE a going away party if you're liked by the higher-ups and a retirement package if you were one the lucky few who didn't get screwed out of your compensation plan.

You long for the day you can escape, but their are consequences if you leave it all behind to pursue your passion full force, no regrets.

5. Time Suck -- I've had jobs where I got so good at it, there was no reason whatsoever to stick around for the duration of my time.

There would be an extra 4hrs or more of downtime. I would either be told to FIND something to do or be fired for unproductiveness, or sent home too early without being paid the hours of my scheduled time causing me to suffer financially.

It actually PAYS to be willfully incompetent because and strive NOT to be the best at what you do. You won't get paid extra for it and there is absolutely NO benefit to being the best because everyone else will put their load on your shoulders and give you more responsibility without any extra money to reflect the extra value brought to the table.

So there you have it. Those are my five. I know I said "10", but I want to know what YOUR 5 reasons are to add to my count to make it a final and official "10".

Well you can't have that "everyday party" mentality like being the big bee. No automation, no residuals and it sucks because you're dancing to a tune you don't like.

Here's another: Sucks the life of you and you never actually lived.

Yet, some people are happy in their day jobs (the devastating minority). What really matters is to enjoy what you do and become enlightened. Be obsessed with life. Make the best out of you already got. Become curious. Find adventure in every given moment. Then you'll be guided by an unseen force that will unveil the greatest and most mystic things in life.

I'm not sure it's happiness so much as it is 'contentment'.

People tolerate it because it appears to be the only viable
options available to them. It FEELS safe, though nothing
could be further from the truth.

Say the wrong words, make the wrong mistake, and your
      canned.

Curiousity quickens the human spirit to explore and learn
      new things. It's incredibly stimulating.

but the 9-5 model beat what came before it.. as prior to that most people worked as subsistence farmers ..look at china .. in a short period of time it moved hundreds of millions of people from farm work to factory jobs ..

the same way in the west .. tractors and other farm machinery replaced the need for as many people doing farm work .. a wide range of programs and robots..and change in system design.. will reduce the number of 9-5 jobs or job all together ..

the education system used around the world was basically designed to train children to do 9-5 jobs..and keep children out of the workforce ..

we are at a transiton point like that when people moved from not having jobs but working on farms..to people having jobs .. now we are moving from long term jobs or careers to gig after gig after gig ..

You all have a good point. Nice discussion.

    I totally agree with this:
"the very high chance you will be replaced by a robot or computer program in the next 10 years"

People nowadays are very intelligent when it comes to technology. And it's really possible that in the next few years there will be no need for manpower because robot will overtake our lives.

It's one thing to work a 9-5 because you have to, but when you're exposed to alternatives such as starting your own online business it really doesn't make a lot of sense to stay in the 9-5 grind. However, entrepreneurship is not for everyone the same way a 9-5 job is not for everyone.

      True.

My mind genuinely can't wrap around the logic behind
choosing slavery...than again, I was raised entrepreneur.

I feel for those who want to escape, but are comfortable
in what they are familiar. They vent their fustrations...and
vent to me about it...are never happy...but feel trapped
      where they are.

The public school systems training them to be employees
from a young age played a huge role in indoctrination.

        Great list!

Here is my list of other things that suck about being a 9 to 5'er:

        Getting sick.
Working while you're sick is very uncomfortable but, some people cannot afford to take any days off because they won't get paid.

Too much money taken out of your paycheck.
We have no control over how much the government takes out. They choose much they will tax the W-2 earner.

Being too old and broke to enjoy the fruits of your own labor. There are people in their late 70's working again because they cannot afford to retire.

The job hunting process to begin with: The idea of spending thousands on a degree or running yourself ragged joining extracurricular activities just to impress a stranger enough to get a job. We give them too much power.

The opening post is great and I love the tonality. I think about organizations and business as like projections of original entrepreneurial ideas and inspirations coming to life through people spending their time and money to in any way succeed in life. If you work for another person's company you are spending your time making that projection a success-- in other words you are dedicating your life to make somebody else's dreams a reality. The entirety of your existence becomes about enslaving yourself for somebody else's success in hopes of learning how to do it yourself or in most cases just trying to survive and pay the bills. We are either strong enough to co-create or innovate our own projections of success, or we will forever be living somebody else's dreams into our reality.

Also just to add my 2 cents worth:

          - The fact that ANYBODY who has been there longer than you in that organization can be your boss. It doesn't matter if you are more qualified, it doesn't matter if they have no life or in any way a purposeful contribution to humanity-- the very fact that they joined the firm before you did, now dictates unforeseen power of tell you how and what to do.

          - The lunch you are eating costs you roughly 1 hour of slavery in-front of a computer likely on excel staring at meaningless numbers that don't mean a God damn thing outside your organization.

          - You are over 30 years old and you need to ask permission or in any way explain where you have been when you need to take a dump in the bathroom.

No matter how much you work, as many extra lunch times you put in, the one day that you need to leave a little early,... your boss looks at it as if someone just snatched his food from under him. He'll disagree with every rational reason until one final thing you say, that he absolutely cannot fight.

Agreed with this one. I enjoyed my previous 9-5 work because your number 5 rule (time suck) didn't apply to me. I can finish ALL the work for the day (or week, or next month) before lunchtime on Tuesday, so I can spend my time on ANYTHING I want to do. Instead of facebook or whatever, I chose to write at my blog.

...at a certain point, however, the office environment changed and things started getting "stuffy." By that time, however, I found my passion and so I quit and started blogging full time.

A 9-to-5 is fine if you love what you're doing though (say, you're a lifestyle travel news crew or something and you love that line of work), but doing that for something you absolutely hate? It ain't worth it. Find another job you like, do online work or freelance, or go the entrepreneur route.

Studies from down under have shown that those who over-rest and meditate tend to manifest way better than those who don't. Personally I am in a constant relaxation and dream state of mind so to visualize and even conjure events emanating from parallel universes.

9-5 is a killer and must be avoided by all means possible. So does overworking your rear off by being an entrepreneur. One must find avenues to automate everything and invest in the spirit. Do everything that what you do, doesn't seem like work but fulfills the psyche and expands the mind.

Annoying coworkers - having to constantly train new people who don't have common sense. Or the ones who are willing to do anything to stab you in the back.
