Getting out of your comfort zone

I have been experimenting getting out of my comfort zone for a while. I found that its a great way to boost your agility and performance.

We are all psychologically tuned to be locked up in a 'comfort zone'. However staying in your comfort zone makes you complacent. You don't feel like trying something new. Your creativity starts rusting.

Trying out simple stuffs to pull yourself out of your comfort zone will make your more enterprising and ever ready to get into an action mode. For example, I am habituated to getting up late in the morning say at 7am IST. Suddenly I thought of getting out of this comfort zone by getting up at 5am. And now it seems to me that I have added 2 more hours to my day

So warriors, you may try breaking free from your comfort zone and posts your observations and opinions in this thread...

  • Congrats to you for branching out! They aren't called our "comfort zones" for no reason! The thing that surprises me is how UNCOMFORTABLE comfort zones can actually be! Yet we find ourselves unwilling to go beyond them. There is a favorite quote of mine by my wonderful mentor. It is: "Fear is the boarder of the reality in which we currently know." (also can be considered the edge of our comfort zone.)

I'm getting out of my comfort zone all the time, as much as I can. When I was little, I was PAINFULLY shy. Like, seriously. My mom and I used to go to Braum's together all the time and I used to HATE it when she would tell me to go and ask for ketchup or napkins or something. I would just stand there at the counter almost paralyzed just waiting for someone to come ask me what I wanted. I'd stand there for quite a while sometimes before someone noticed me.

I didn't like talking to people I didn't know, and really hated asking for things. I can't say that I deliberately worked on it, however. I just know the older I got, the more and more I got out of my comfort zones and realized that nothing was going to kill me. I learned to ask myself, "what's the worst that could happen?"

And again, as more time goes on, I find myself just branching out every chance I get. Sometimes I feel like I'm out of line, but then again, I just ask myself what's the worst that could happen. If you approach it right, you can pretty much ask any question to anyone you want and there won't be significant repercussions from it, and even if there are, I promise over time, it will go away or fade into insignificance.

I recently took a HUGE step out of my comfort zone and became self employed. I realized the only way to really take a quantum leap in my life was to rip the rug out from underneath myself. Now I'm building a life coaching business and doing some online marketing. I have high expectations for myself and my faith grows every day.

Thanks for the post! Keep going beyond those boarders, there's a HUGE world out there of possibilities!

Thanks for this beautiful addition to my thread.

And many congratulations for getting out of your comfort zone and becoming self employed. I did it 3 months back and enjoying the experience as I am also building my own business!!

Branching out in life has its own share of beauty and thrill...which one can only taste by way of experience. Ofcourse there are few changes in the mindset and old habits. But I guess its fun doing that! And that's what makes life happening and worth living

  • Be sure to keep working at it for at least 30 days. Only when your habit is formed, will you have the extra 2 more hours.

That's one of the reasons why I mountain bike.

Added bonus: MTBing trains your brain to focus on opportunities rather than on obstacles... a mindset that's extremely handy in business as well.

    well,

lets see , instead of getting out of your comfort zone..expand your comfort zone ..just what are you willing to do to get what you want ..that you will most likely be fine with having done ..

or are you going to be comfortable in a life with a list of thing you do not have because you where not willing to do what was needed to get the things you chose you wanted ..

i don't have the things i want yet ..but i know why i want them.. and i will not stay in a role that won't get me them .

anyway .. i use to be very shy..hid away in my room at my computer when i wasn't working at a job that made me miserable.. the dream of making money online..not having to really interact with people ..
only ever a dream ..now i am an entertainer ..i moved to las vegas and work in a costume on the strip.. where i use to get very upset if people looked at me and laughed..now i get people to crack up when they see me ...

i'm self employed but i only stay that way as long as people take pictures with me and tip me ..

a huge amount of the business advice written in books ..as well as the employment job carrier path..are outdated ..and very risky ..

it is very hard for me to go find a job and be comfortable or get in a comfort zone.. when most things i could do will be replaced by robots ..or computer programs ..

most comfort zones or comfort bubbles today have a nasty meeting with the reality of the future ..and it doesn't matter who americans vote for the future is coming ..

it is really easy to get out of a comfort zone if you look into the future and draw out where you will be in 5 or ten years if you stay doing what you are doing ..

learn to cook and make food that tastes good to you, order different food when you go out to eat..or different food from the same place ..you eat at least three times a day you can start working on expanding you comfort zone eating different foods ..and learning how to make thing that taste goo and are healthy to eat .

grow fresh herbs and use them in your cooking ..

list a verity of thing you can do that are just outside your comfort zone and may only need small steps ..to do..then do that..and do the next ..and to the next ..expand what is in your comfort zone ..

every day there are more and more options to do new interesting things that are not really crazy ..but interesting ..this is the driver of the new economy ..as the old economy limps along and only show growth..from major amounts of fraud ..and dangerous amounts of risk ..

you don't have to get rich..you don't need to to do well in the new economy..

Nice reminder: Got some good quotes to share:

Bardwick defines the term as "a behavioral state where a person operates in an anxiety-neutral position."

Brown describes it as "Where our uncertainty, scarcity and vulnerability are minimized — where we believe we’ll have access to enough love, food, talent, time, admiration. Where we feel we have some control.

I think, Maslow's hierarchy of needs can help us further to understand our comfort zone.

That's indeed good quotes... Thanks for sharing.

Maslow's hierarchy of needs probably conveys that more you get to the top, the more you need to be getting out of your comfort zone!!

Getting out of your comfort zone is really a good thing and is advisable.

Living within your comfort zone is such such great place.

But you should know that life has so much more to offer and we should be brave to try new things.

We should really try to get out of our comfort zone even once in a while.

Life is not always staying on the safest place.

We should be willing to explore and experience new adventures.

    We should try new adventures.

That's where we get memorable and unforgettable experiences.

  • Outside your comfort zone there are new experiences and skills. So you improve when get out of your comfort zone. When you have mastered those experiences and skills your comfort zone has expanded and then you are more confident in an bigger area.

If you don't get out of your comfort zone, you don't grow. If go to far out of your comfort zone your out of control. So you need to get a little out of your comfort zone that you grow and are in the zone. In the zone you also will do your best work.

So you need to keep expanding your comfort zone.

Waking up an hour or two earlier has been a lifechanger for me. I'm amazed at what Im able to accomplish before the rest of the world wakes up, especially on those good days when you are really in the zone.

Another keystone habit that made huge difference in being comfortable with being uncomfortable is by taking cold showers, start by ending your showers with 5 seconds of cold water, and build your way up. Mothers were seen putting their children into literally icecold water and when asked what they were doing to torture their children, they simply replied "It builds courage"

Step 1 (at least for Me) is first observing that I am entering an area of life/learning that is uncomfortable. Just observing that you are not as comfortable. This is the first step to get closer to the next step which is to breathe in, give yourself the space. Then allow your self to take the next step. A lot of times comfort in any area comes from being competent in that specific area. I can do anything on a computer, but I can't drive a car and don't want to even learn it so its ok. Lol. I'll probably buy stock in these new self driving cars. Haha. But in all seriousness, if I wanted to learn an area, its back to the books, the field, the practice. Any one can become great in any area with constant daily learning. I did not go to school for my current area of expertise.

    Great topic Vikram!

    We should embrace that!

    To share my 2 cents.
"The best and quickest way to grow is to get uncomfortable with tasks that scare you."
I came across this quote a while back and it's a constant reminder for me. Just last week I got a revelation on being uncomfortable while watching a video and it was a huge mindset change for me.

I realised that what I had become was due to the constant "uncomfortable" situation that I was "thrown" in throughout my life journey. And that became me. You may be the same too. Just think back on how and what you did earlier in your life and how that became you, and how it was uncomfortable at first but now you don't think about it - it became comfortable.

Like many of us, I had to learn new stuff and grow to become the new comfortable me. I had to (many times "forced" due to work) step outside my earlier comfort to get uncomfortable for a new comfort. I had no choice and I kept repeating the process without actually realising it. You may be doing the same too.

Many times, when we start our a new journey like to make money online or a new business, we are afraid to get uncomfortable because we have a choice -- we want to learn as much as possible, buying, reading and watching all the new WSOs, absorbing new info and shiny objects we can get our hands on. WE WANT TO BE COMFORTABLE with the topics/tasks before we take the leap, forever never implementing and doing the actual work cause it's uncomfortable. That's bull crap! We've been lied to.

You have to be brave or even you have to "force" yourself to become uncomfortable with the new tasks or actions, cause it's a new thing to us, and it's suppose to be uncomfortable. A mindset change to be successful in the new thing. Just allow ourselves to make mistakes, learn and adapt, to improve our craft by taking action, making mistakes and learning from it. Think about it, how else are we going to grow?

Once we have the marketing/sales skills etc. we will make money or succeed in what we are aiming to achieve.

At the outset, many thanks for sharing your wonderful insights on this topic.

I believe that what we called as a growth is basically transition state from being uncomfortable to being comfortable.

It all starts with a dream of doing something. Then comes a decision to go for it. Next is the beginning of the process, a journey from where you are to where you want to go.

Initially things are tough. They make you feel uncomfortable. But that drive in you and the spirit of never give up, motivates you to overcome that uncomfortable state. You are motivated to seek the rewards of the process. In that motivation, you happen to do things which can even surprise yourself. And finally with hordes of struggle when you finally achieve what you had dreamt of; the feeling of satisfaction and happiness is unparalleled. Everything then becomes comfortable.

I guess for that feeling of happiness, you are ready to go through this journey of struggles and uncomfortable situations.

We should need to get out of our shelves.

Thanks Vikram for the share. I think that each and every person has their own strong points. For example: I work much better during the last 30 minutes of the deadline and some of my friends panic during that time. So, knowing our strengths and dividing the work accordingly make a huge difference in final output
