Really annoyed... ready for a RANT??
I've taken on a web design project for a local non-profit organisation. I quoted £150GBP for the job, and it's about 2 FULL days work for me, but it's extremely complex for me because there are so many pages.... lots of galleries and description pages etc. I'd say 80% of the work is preparing the initial template, and the rest is just a case of applying the (supplied) content and images (some need basic manipulation) to the template and organising the links/page structure.
Well... I just reached the 79% point... and all of a sudden.... I'm not sure what happened... but one of the most important files in the whole project just dissapeared off my computer without a trace. It's a photoshop (.psd) file... can't find it anywhere... it's definitely gone... not in the recycle bin, not accidentally saved in the wrong place.... *GONE*. I've wasted most of my weekend working on this damn site and I can't afford to waste any more time on it. Ok you might say it's not wasted time because it's PAID... but I need to spend quality time with my family.. my wife gets home from work at 7pm tonight.... I want to hand this site over to the client by Thursday at the latest, but my diary is full til then.
As you can imagine, I'm extremely annoyed. I actually quit college (a computer studies course) after 1 year, (this was 12 years ago) because I got fed up of the way computers just "go wrong" without any obvious explanation. I worked in the pub trade, and in restaurant management for the past 8-9 years, and then found myself back at my computer in recent years. I'm entrepeneurial, and I've made a fair living online in the past 18 months or so... but moments like this just kill me. I'll never get those hours of graft back.
The job was so tedious... well not the whole job, just the work on this one file.... the file that disappeared was the background template image, a huge gif, scanned in from the artists original pen drawing and then touched up using photoshop ALL FREAKIN DAY and now it's GONE! I saved it, plenty of times.... arrrggghhh!!!!
I could start again, but I'm just too wound up.
My options are:
1. Calm the f**k down and start again... but I don't have time to do this.
2. Hand the job over to somebody else... somebody very patient who knows how to avoid losing files accidentally...
I guess that's my solution, if anybody out there wants to help. There's £150 in it for ya! If there are any UK-based warriors out there who would like to take this job off my hands, please get in touch. It's the weekend and I really don't need this stress right now. All the text and graphics have been supplied by the client (makes a nice change!), it's just a matter of touching up some of the images and building the structure/navigation....
