Are You a True Leader? Not if Your not Practicing These!

As you make it to the basketball court you see one of your
good friends running up and down the court at full speed
dribbling the ball. Taking a closer look you find that his toes
are hanging out of his shoes, he has know shoe strings, and
the sole of his left shoe is nearly gone. Both of you wear the
same size shoe, and you happen to have two brand new pairs
of gym shoes in your bag. After offering your friend a pair he
responds, "Thanks but know thanks. I'm too busy to change,
maybe when I'm done."

Are you to "busy" in growing your business that you don't take the
necessary time needed to "sharpen the blade" so to speak. Though
there are many tasks that demand our attention we have to take
time to maintain the tools we use to produce the results we want.
Like a man chopping at a tree with a dull blade who tells the person
there to replace the blade he's to busy chopping to get a new one.
We must keep in mind that our tools are only as good as we
maintain them.

Running hand in hand with maintenance is patience. A lot of times
we don't want to take the time to maintain our tools (be them
physical or mental) because we are in such a rush. As we all know
"Patience is a Virtue", and it can be one that either makes or breaks
your business. This can be found with the farmer and his goose. You
know the story. Poor farmer discovers he has a goose who lays golden
eggs, becomes wealthy and desires more eggs faster, (becomes
impatient) so he decides to kill the goose and retrieve all of the eggs
only to find that there are no eggs in the goose; poor bird. With the
bird dead he no longer has access to the gold, and no gold means back
to the poor house for our impatient farmer.

In short continue to invest in self, maintain your tools, and practice
patience. Three Basic Practices of a True Leader!!

Stephen Covey talks about this in his best-selling book, "7 Habits of Highly Effective People".

He mentions the children's story of the goose that lays golden eggs. If the goose isn't taken care of (or even worse killed!) the golden eggs stop coming.

One of the things that bugs me about "leaders" is that they think that their job is to "command." In reality, only a good follower can make a good leader.
