Money cannot buy happiness but it certainly can improve your odds of locating something in life that does make you very happy.

I think money buys stability, comfort, further opportunity and a lot more that can all BRING happiness. Of course money doesn't directly buy happiness.. that's ridiculous. A lot of people say that though, "money doesn't buy happiness"--the only people I've heard say this are people born into money or people who have never experienced NOT having money.

It can't buy you happiness, but it can give you a greater degree of freedom and control over your life, and that can make you happier. In studies they've found that once you pass the level of poverty, people's reported levels of happiness don't to increase much with income level.

Maybe money can buy artificial or temporary happiness but not genuine happiness. Money can make us do things that in a way give us a sense of fulfillment or success but cannot guarantee happiness.

No. Money does not buy happiness. Happiness is a state of mind. People say I'll be happy when ----- (I get whatever). But people can choose their state of mind through affirmations, visualization and creative imagination. Also, gratitude (being thankful) plays a powerful role in happiness. So you can choose to be happy. However. a few extra bucks in your pocket can produce a lot of gratitude!

I agree, happiness is in the mind, can Ice-cream make you happy?

you can certainly enjoy it (just as money) but it's not happiness on to itself, you decide to be happy ;Ice-cream on not, money or not.

Many possible answers covering many layers of meaning/perspective re happiness. It's
not only the money but also how the money was obtained. Lots of people making good
money doing something they cannot stand, or even hate. I know that one from personal
experience. I was making 6 figures/year and hating every minute of the job. Grateful for
    the cash, of course.

I really believe, now, that happiness results more from perspective, attitude, and feeling
    than anything else.

The most common answer is that money can get you the things that make it easier for you to be happy. But the truth is that money can only control your happiness (or lack of it) if you choose to give away your power to money and the things it can buy.

You can choose to be happy only when you have a big house, car, etc, or you can choose to be happy for no reason.

If you think money buys happiness, then perhaps it will, but only because you let it.

Happiness doesn't just happen to you, you're the one that chooses whether to let it into your life.

I've seen money enslave far more people than it has made them happy. The only real use of money is to help you to enhance the things that already bring happiness.

    A vacation with your family.
A gift that shows your appreciation for that special someone.

I once had a best friend whose dad was a doctor and they lived in a million dollar house, and her bedroom was larger than the average apartment, complete with TV, Internet, and private bathroom. Was this family happy? Sadly, no. Stereotypical "rich man's wife" who's never had a job constantly spending her husband's money and putting him down, then my friend had issues of her own...

We had freedom to do whatever the hell we wanted, but money alone couldn't take care of her problems.

Which brings me to... money buys FREEDOM, but it comes with a few catches.

The more money you have, the greater responsibility. This especially applies to the IM world - are you really mature enough to handle potential hoards of money coming in? Before you quit your job to go party in Vegas for a month, do you have money in the bank? Have you gotten out of debt? Have you set aside money for your children's college tuition?

I'm not making a lot of money (yet) but the unfinished business gets taken care of first, then a savings account built (with at least six months' worth of expenses), a tiny bit goes to retirement fund (sure, I'm 50 years too early to be thinking about that, but I'm NOT going to get to that age and realize, "oh sh*t"), and once all that's done, THEN I start buying my boxsets of House >

money is only the means - and it is each ones choice what they buy with it - but certainly happiness is not for sale. Some 'sold' their souls for money - did it get them happiness? I don't know of any single case throughout the entire existence of mankind where the reward for sold soul was happiness.

A lot of people say money can't buy you happiness, but what can?...think about it?

Lets say you for example you have nothing to your name today you have a wife that's about to leave you because your jobless, and you have 2 kids that need your help... then tomorrow you win the lottery worth 10 million dollars, would you not be happy?

at that moment everything is together and you feel good, if you know how to manage your money down the road that 10 million just bought your happiness because you kept your wife, and your able to provide for your children, now your comfortable and able to do the things you want..your happy thats what I think!

I was at the grocery store checkout the other day and, while I was waiting for my wife to pay, I glanced at the cover of a magazine that was there. It featured a story about Brad Pitt and his wife Angela.

    They didn't look too happy.

Seems they are living in separate parts of their French mansion and not speaking to each other. Was this just some Hollywood gossip? Who knows, but it just seems so typical of spoiled rich people with big egos who can't get along because they are unwilling to give up something.

Money? We all need money. That's just the way the world works. But like anything when it comes to excess the the trouble starts. Here's a little story out of the Washington Post. It's about William Bud Post III a guy who won big in the lottery.

    A good lesson I think.

Money itself can't, but it can buy things that make you happy. For example if you enjoy sailing you can purchase a yacht, if you like football you can purchase a football team and so on and so forth. Plus gone would be the frustration of wanting things that you can't have because you are unable to afford them.

Yes, What happens is when we don't have enough money to maintain our life, manage our daily food and life standard then we will be in great tension. At this time if we have enough money then surely we will be happy.

But, after that money will never buy happiness when we have good wealth to maintain our life. So, the conclusion will be money will not buy happiness but it is needed to full fill our needs. Actually, full filling our needs will will make happy.

Partially money can buy happiness , but not for a long time as when everything become available for you then life will lose its meaning .Basically money can buy "joy" as the happenese is an overall state you can hardly reah it , if you told some body a joke you will make him smiling but you will not make him happy , money can purchase a smile for you but definitly it will not purchase HAPPINESS.

All in all, it was probably a mistake to look for the answer to the eternal question--"Does money buy happiness?"--from people who practice what's called the dismal science. For when economists tackled the question, they started from the observation that when people put something up for sale they try to get as much for it as they can, and when people buy something they try to pay as little for it as they can. Both sides in the transaction, the economists noticed, are therefore behaving as if they would be more satisfied (happier, dare we say) if they wound up receiving more money (the seller) or holding on to more money (the buyer). Hence, more money must be better than less, and the only way more of something can be better than less of it is if it brings you greater contentment. The economists' conclusion: the more money you have, the happier you must be.

Many people who have lots of money tend to be "afraid of losing it", meaning their money "owns" them in a way.

But like my father taught me... "Having lots of money doesn't make you happy, but it certainly helps!"

But it really depends on what you want... The freedom to buy anything you want wouldn't be too bad.
For me, I'll be happy when I can order a smoothie for $7, not like it, and don't care!

To me, happiness comes from living in the moment. My cat just curled up in my lap and is purring up a storm. I'm enjoying that. It doesn't matter if I have $1 or $1,000,000 in the bank--I'm getting the same amount of happiness from spending time with a cat who loves me.

I personally think money can buy happiness to a certain extent. But money alone cannot bring you total happinness. Money cannot buy you true friends. True friends and family is a big factor in anybody's happines, not just money alone.

Money can never buy happiness, but it can help in many ways. With money, you can live life less stress, do what you want when you want, and other things that may make you happy but the ultimate happiness comes from your personal life, your family, the people you are friends with, etc.

Without true friends and family and all the money in the world, you would still not be as happy as having the things you really do love the most that money can not buy.

"Often people attempt to live their lives backwards: they try to have more things, or more money, in order to do more of what they want, so they will be happier. The way it actually works is the reverse. You must first be who you really are, then do what you need to do, in order to have what you want." -Margaret Young

Money can buy only materialistic things which in turn gives oneself happiness. Money doesn't buy happiness. Happiness is found in ones inner self and not outside. If a person is self satisfied with what he achieves or possesses i think happiness is an integral part of him. Thanks

According to behavioral finance experts (yes, there is such a field), money does buy happiness but the feeling is fleeting. You have to continually earn more money to get the "high," which is why even the super rich keep wanting more and more wealth and possessions.

nope, my answer absolutely, money cannot buy happiness.
Why? It's because if we lose our money, we can still earn it next day.
We must be mastering our money and use it for our wellness not in the contrary being controlled by money and that's mean we are greedy.

All things being equal, more money = more happiness for the majority of people.

That being said, a poor Buddhist monk could easily be happier than multi-millionaire stockbroker. But that is comparing apples and oranges.

I think the issue is that people spend their whole life chasing riches, and ignore the other parts of their life. Money is very important but so is good health and relationships.

money? yes it could bring happiness but never true happiness like "love"!! you can make the person you love to stay with you but you can't buy his or her love if its not for you... so we must accept the reality that money could never buy True happiness instead it only buy material happiness.

With out going in to all the variables of the situation.

Money makes me happy indirectly. I couldn't live without it, where I live.

Sleeping under over passes and eating out of the garbage wouldn't make me happy. Although, being homeless in Japan is probably much better than being homeless in North America. At least from what I've seen.

I had a tooth cavity one time. Paid the dentist and he took care of it. You can bet I was happy and still happy I don't have any dental pains.

Yup... indirectly, money makes me happy.

You can also spend it to help make others happy. I find that whenever I give to someone I feel like a million bucks. but I do hate it when I feel like I am being used for my money.

Money can`t buy happiness...But there`s nothing evil in having lots of money either!

Money is awesome tool you can use to make lots of people happy...including yourself...But still, happiness is an inside job.

    Interesting audio.
Personally, I don`t think money buys happiness. Not directly. But it certainly gives you more freedom to easier experience happiness in many reachable areas.
But it doesn`t guarantee happiness by itself.

Money can`t buy happiness for sure. Look at the case of Tiger wood right now. He is a billionaire but he is messed up and definitely not a happy man right now with all the money he has.
