Don't think about elephants!

For all those, who've already seen the Inception movie, and others who will decide to give it a chance after reading this thread (hopefully), here's a quick reminder of the famous "helicopter scene."

Saito: "If you can steal an idea from someone's mind, why can't you plant one there instead?"
Arthur: "Okay, here's me planting an idea in your head. I say to you, don't think about elephants. What are you thinking about?"
Saito: "Elephants."

Here's one more missing element, which you need to get the grasp of the whole story. Prior to writing, I've spent almost an entire decade in sales. This is an activity, I strongly recommend to all psychology study enthusiasts. To make the long story short, one of the ultimate and most important lessons included a controversial approach, at least to say. We're supposed to move around a client with our sale story and put hands in the air, like we don't care. This was borrowed from one song, but I can't remember which one. Either way, you're selling, but you're supposed to give an impression that you don't want to sell a thing. You're completely disinterested, but inside you're burning. You respect the intelligence and "free will" of your potential buyer, and you leave him or her to decide. Little do your buyers know that they've already bought your product or services, before they said their final - yes.

Honestly, I completely forgot what the name of this sales technique was. Yet, I use it to this very day, with my kids, of course. So, if I want them to do something, all I have to do is to ask the opposite. Don't jump, and they'll inevitably jump. It's in our nature to behave in this way, I guess. My word of advice is to save this weapon for special moments and categories of people. This approach asks for a lot of emotional involvement on both sides. Now, let's get back to our elephants, shall we?

So, if you want to be a successful Internet marketer you have to make people do or think what you want. You can call it what you like, but at the end of the long marketer's day, it all comes down to a "manipulation," more or less, directly or indirectly. Now, if you want to be an artist in your Internet marketing business, you need to make sure that your potential customers or buyers are completely unaware that they're following your lead. You don't have to worry. I know that this doesn't sound like a positive thing, but we are all "victims" of these smooth manipulation techniques on a daily basis. We're buying or ordering so many things or services without being aware that someone has already made a decision in our own name.

Don't sign up for my newsletter! Well, this would a literal and a pretty much rough interpretation and application of our "elephant" strategy. Yet, I do believe that you can do much better than this. For example, if I say don't read my articles, it's very likely that I will find more readers, compared to a situation, when I say please read what I've written. Elephants can be quite effective, if you can make them move where and how you want them.

Is our ultimate goal the ultimate mind control?

The Inception guys were thieves, quite unusual and very intelligent ones, but still the mind thieves. You'll have to see the movie again to remind yourself what was their punishment or reward. As Internet marketers, we should be focused on creative and enjoyable researches, rather than the serious studies of the so-called Dark Side. Forget about Jedi knights and their powers. I haven't seen a customer, who doesn't truly appreciate an intelligent and a respectful approach. Yet, every now and then, you should remind yourself about this elephant story. I already told you this is an emotional thing. My wife cries her eyes out every time when she watches a romantic movie where a bad boy says something, you mustn't love me, because I'm bad, to a lovely girl. This is such a ridiculous cliché that I laugh every time. Yet, the girls all over the world are buying this thing over and over again.

I would like to make a list of all bad things I can think of about my articles. Yet, I'm afraid that elephants wouldn't work for me. Some warriors may take it as it is.
