Shopping cart Abandonment

New internet venture, I am getting about 10 people to check out but only closing around 10% of them. I know you will always have a few that drop out but would like to get the completion rate north of 50%. Any tips suggestions on how to accomplish this. Currently using "1 shopping cart" 2 step check out.

please help

thank you

Maybe a free offer on completion of the sale , or a free gift (pdf?...)

am not familiar with your cart script - but, don't you have register requirement before checkout?
This is nearly a must, and not a deterent for potential customers to go all the way to your cart.
This way, you have at least their email and user name.
The, immediately follow up with an email [or autoresponder] asking them what prevented the completion. Keep it 'fault-wise' on your side, like ... did you have difficulty on our shopping cart page.... etc., etc.
Then offer them a direct link back to your cart to try again.
This usually works for at least 30% of them returning rather quickly.
You can follow up on the ones that did not react to your first email, with a second: but it has to be brief and only stating the fact as a "reminder of your first follow up email.
You can set this up simply in your autoresponder - ergo, no further work for you.

There's a WSO offer currently on the first page. It's called, stop shopping cart
abandonment. No, it's not mine. I just noticed it, so I thought you may have
an interest. It's only 5.00. I guess that's not much to at least see what it's
    about.
