It's supposed to indicate that by the time you reach the age of 40, most of life's trials, tribulations and impediments should all be in the rear-view mirror. Of course, this is just one more trite cliché which means nothing and has a different meaning to each person.

    One person's opinion, here: http://www.phrases.org.uk/meanings/life-begins-at-forty.html

    Cheers,

    Frank

P.S. Contrary to popular belief, Google is your friend.

That is NOT what the phrase relates to, but of course someone with your 'touchie-feelie' perspective on everything in life, would regard it as such.

Google the phrase and get off your high horse. Your perception of the phrase isn't even close, but of course, the truth would be lost on you. You have utter disregard for the truth. You'll find dozens of references to the actual meaning of the phrase, but you will insist on disregarding them because they don't match your giant load of steaming BS.

You're hopeless and helpless. And, laughable!

Is there something wrong with you Frank? (Seriously, like a learning disability or something?) It's just that because you sometimes come across (and communicate like) a weird ***hole.

And, as much as I like you, if you keep up with these insulting posts I'm going to have to report you to the Mods. (And, ultimately, if you keep doing it, have you banned.)

That's all you can do because you have no way of validating your points. When all you can do is report someone to win an argument, what are you? Not a man of principle. You're the school kid that calls the principal because he thinks he's being picked on.

You don't think the mods see every word I post? They watch me like a hawk. Trust me on this,

Did you ever stop to think that possibly they agree with my position and see you for what you are? No one likes a pablum-pusher.

What are you, 17? Grow up, be a man and fight your own battles.

            Cheers. - Frank

P.S. Getting me banned would be the crowning achievement of your entire existence and if an when that happens everyone here will know what you are and will have even less respect than they do for you, already. IF that's actually possible.

              (Lol). OK Frank

The problem is, Frank, that I'm not the first person you have insulted an offended over the years. And, what concerns me most, is that you have absolutely no conscience or concern for your behaviour.

Not everyone is like me and they may take your degrading comments to heart.

Congratulations. That's one of the most ridiculous things I've ever heard.

Watch those 'personal attacks.' They can get you banned. lol
It wasn't an attack. It was a Frank assessment. (Lol.) : P

That is totally correct. Ask my friends and family.

Right, when I do it, it's an attack. When you do it, it's an assessment. Priceless.

Exactly. And that's part of the problem. While I respect you for speaking your Mind, you have to consider that many times you're being reckless and inconsiderate to other Forum Members.

No, Jonathan. That is something that you would like me to do in order for you to feel that I am living my life by your standards of what is right and what is wrong which would only make you more smug and self-righteous. Because I love you and want to help you grow as man, I won't cater to you neediness.

It is by no means something that I have to consider. Additionally, have you ever stopped to think that possibly I have considered all my options and made a conscious decision to act how I see fit, whether you approve of it or not?

Stop judging people. It doesn't coincide with all your 'new-age, touchy-feely' BS. Let people live their lives the way they see for for themselves.

How many ways can I say that I do not care what you think, feel or say about me. You just don't get it.

Open your mind, Jonathan. Open your mind. There are ways for people to live their lives other than what you prescribe for them as the 'one true path.' Jonathan's path. Trust me, I ain't going down that road. lol

                    Cheers. - Frank

P.S. Ever time I post and think we're done beating this dead horse, you return with your whip. :-) Why are you so lacking in self-control that you just can't let it go? Show everyone how strong you are and don't respond. But you can't. You need my engagement so much that you're lost without it.

Now - I will show you what man does. I will no longer engage you on this topic. I believe I have made my thoughts clear. No matter what you post, I will not respond. I hope that I can set an example of strength for you, because someone has to. :-)

Lol. We're like chalk and cheese, Frank. My purpose (and Mission) in Life is to empower and inspire as many people as humanly possible. (And nothing will stop me from doing that.)

I don't know what your purpose is however I hope it's something worth-while.

I just turned 40. I don't feel any different. Yet, I keep hearing from my friends and family that this is a particular age when you're supposed to enjoy a little bit more. It's like you've solved most of your problems and achieved most of the goals, like you got a job, found yourself a house, have a family, etc. Honestly, I think this phrase is one of those let me tell you something so you can feel better because you're getting older. Life begins at 30, 40, 50. Guess, you life begins with every new challenge and opportunity. Cheers!

    Here's a quick Google result:

"Meaning : Life begins to be better in one's middle age.

Origin : The notion that 'life begins at forty' is a 20th century one; prior to that it was more accurate to say 'death begins at forty' as most people didn't live much beyond that age. Life expectancy in mediaeval England was around 25 years and only reached forty sometime around the turn of the 20th century. By the 1930s many, in western societies at least, could expect a decent spell of reasonably affluent retirement, free from work and the responsibilities of childcare. Household gadgets like washing machines and vacuum cleaners were becoming more widely used and had begun to relieve women's drudgery and offer them increasing amounts of leisure time as compared to their Victorian mothers.
    "

To me life begins are forty has a few possible meanings and possibilities why this is a common statement.

Possibly it could me the following:

    - You've probably figured out what you want to do with your life career-wise
    - You're probably married or in a relationship that you are hopefully happy with or aware of what you want out of a relationship and what you don't want
    - You could have had your family and they are out of the baby phase and you're starting to get your life back
    - Financially you're starting to get established and you're more confident about your financial position
    - Physically you've got the time to take care of yourself and your health
    - Lifestyle-wise you have a better capability of relaxing, taking time out and taking holidays

Overall, it could just mean that you're a little more organised and your life and ready to take on life with gusto.

    I am 48.

In this season of my life, I don't have small children. (My youngest is almost 12 - I started having kids a tad late.)

I've become a lot more comfortable in my own skin.

I have more wisdom, more patience, and more experience.

I have a lot more peace.

That is what "Life begins at 40" means to me.

LOL after reading the first several posts & then
the argue between Jonathan & Frank
    This topic seriously gotten off-topic...

So lets get back on that!

Regarding the age 40 & saying life only begins then....

I believe Age indeed is a state of mind.
Although at certain stage in life we learned & experienced more
Lets see it like this age 1-20 is growing up and learning "the basics"
After that its mostly work 20-40, but then indeed at age 40
At stage where most people have children, house etc
Its a time of age where you get more settled = more comfortable in life.
But that doesnt mean it cant be at an earlier age.

Can also see it like this: that its an age where you have "everything figured out' or Not...
