Best one-sentence definition of success that I can think of is Maya Angelou's: “Success is liking yourself, liking what you do, and liking how you do it.”

I like how Einstein defined success, " If A is a success in life, then A equals x plus y plus z. Work is x; y is play; and z is keeping your mouth shut.”

That keeping your mouth shut part (ideas that are best kept confidential, at the moment opinion about people, anger) is seldom mentioned but is essential.

I think success is reaching your( being subjective) point of 'being content' which is why i believe measure of success is subjective. Success is a feeling of accomplishment combined with importance and appreciation.

I don't have one sentence - never thought of it that way - so these are thoughts that would go into it if I ever come up with just one sentence.

I believe what one spiritual leader said "No success can compensate for failure in the home." So, whatever my sentence is it would have to include family at the center.

Of course, a successful family is made up of successful individuals. So part of it would also include being everything I can be but not for wealth or status but to help my family.

Being all I can be includes being successful in all important areas of life. It does no good to be filthy rich if you can't hold a steady relationship or your kids hate you (at least to me it wouldn't do any good).

Likewise, dying at 40 because you are overweight and your arteries are clogged up with too many Oreos, doesn't help the lasting success part of it.

My first draft then may be something like this:

True success to me means reaching my full potential in all important areas of life, especially in having and building a loving, lasting family.

      Interesting post. Thanks Mark.

I would have to say that "success" (for me) would mean developing Christ-like Character. What does that mean? The fruit of the Holy Sprit:

Love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.

"Each problem has hidden in it an opportunity so powerful that it literally dwarfs the problem. The greatest success stories were created by people who recognized a problem and turned it into an opportunity."―Joseph Sugarman
