How Emerson and Elton John did me wrong?

We can all agree that Ralph Waldo Emerson and Elton John represent quite an unusual combination, can't we? Yet, I have been using some of their motivational quotes for quite some time. Unsuccessfully, sadly and unfortunately. In a way, I think that they did me wrong. There's this saying, we are what we eat. I can also say, we are what we think. So, I think that I haven't been thinking the right way, and here's why.

If you don't like the world, make it to suit you. All true men have done so before you.
R.W. Emerson

You can rest assured that I have really tried to be a true man who tries to change the world to suit him. However, this attempt didn't turn out well for the number of reasons. This world is obviously a tough opponent. Or maybe I have choosen the wrong world to suit to my expectations. Maybe Emerson was using metaphors. Something like, change the artistic world not the real one we live in. I don't know. Either way, I think this is actually a bad and a very harmful thought to use in your life and business. There's no way, you are going to suit the world. You have to adapt. You have to compromise. Then, at some point in time, you can get a rare opportunity to adjust some of its parts. But, forget about the whole world. Also, I think that the wrong thing about this line is that it gives you a false sense of hope and strength that you can go against the world and the circumstances in your life. This head against the wall costed me a lot, that was for sure.

I want love on my own terms
After everything I've ever learned
Me, I carry too much baggage
Oh man I've seen so much traffic
Elton John "I Want Love"

When you listen to this song, then you really feel special. At least, Sir Elton John knew what he was talking, better to say signing about. Wanting, offering, or in any other way messing up with love on your own terms is the most efficient shortcut to an emotional catastrophy. You can also say, I want business on my own terms. Who is to stop you? However, this doesn't necessarily mean that you are going to conduct a successful business. So, my word of advice is that you should definitely enjoy this lovely song, but pleast don't take it literally.

We all have great and positive quotes, lines, thoughts, and other motivational forms we use and rely on in our lives. That's OK and an understandable thing to do. Yet, I would like to hear from you, are there any forms that did you wrong? How many of them were actually misleading in their nature? Guess, you have to be painfully honest about it, just like I did.
