Which is better for marketing? Empathy or greed?

I read somewhere that to empathize means to walk in someones shoes. Modern marketing is way too digitized and there is pile of content floating around that flashes in front of you potential customers eyes. But where is the edge in all that? Everyone is playing their part and following the contemporary path to market themselves. In short, everyone is up for grabs whenever the opportunity is available.

Here's a thing guys!! In modern marketing and especially in this particular era no one gives you an opportunity to be ripped off because of the thing called King Google. Everything is accessible and within reach because people have a choice to change their decisions.

Lets consider a mindset of a startup and basically Im going to revolve this whole thread around that. Most of the time startups are impatient and expect quick results to achieve overnight success. Throughout this whole game they forget what kind of attention customer expects

In a nutshell, its must to start your beginnings based on 'human centered marketing' or in short thats where you show empathy . You need to focus on these following things when you decide to go for it

1. Find out what they are thinking and deliver it to them.

2. Their prospect goals

3. What things matter to them and the reason behind it

The best way in this marketing world is to offer help to your clients to firm your position in negotiations. Its ok that for some time you have to offer free e-books to your clients to get their attention or you have to send out free samples to prove the quality of your product. Through all this you will be getting something very precious . Thats trust!!. They say that the most expensive thing in the world is trust and you my friend will be getting it for free just for showing some empathy.

Dont get depressed if youre not making enough in the beginning. Its perfectly alright first to focus your attention on gaining enough followers to monetize your business for foreseeable future. Bring the greed in once you have an impressive brand legacy.

Why this is important? Well to be honest digital marketers usually do business on generic based stuff like health products, clothing etc. We are not creating something that people will rush to buy without any effective marketing . We just cash in on our customers pre-existing needs. Now with immense competition in these niches, you have to differentiate yourself in the market and I think showing empathy in your dealings can really make you stand out.

What works out for you? Do you guys just go right away for the money or take some time to develop a seller-client relationship? Enlighten us with your tactics.

Cheers.

What you wrote is thoughtful. I will agree in principle. But I also
will say that we know people are greedy, we know they want to look
beautiful, we know they want to lose weight.
We know they want it easy and they crave money.
    I believe in A/B testing.
I ask my wife what she wants oftern. but she does not even know, even when
she gives me an answer I often think she is not correct. So how will 10,000
    mail reciepents know?
Trust your instints and test, always test.
Hit the thanks button if you got something from this.

Empathy and emotional intelligence is critically important. However, if the majority people within start-ups are in it for the short haul, they will both think, act and do short haul business. A lot of the time this lacks in empathy. Of course, there is the lie that has been spread about how great it is to be an entrepreneur, start a businesses, make a tonne of quick buck to then retire in hawaii a couple of years later. It's everywhere, you see it everyday on instagram, a guy hires a sports care to pretend that it's his for a week to sell his 'master course' for - a quick buck. Nobody seems to talk about the hard work, the grit and the sheer willpower of building something sustainable and long-term.

Marketing is built on relationships and we should all know that real, trusting and deep relationships are built over time. You'll reap what you sow - so sow good seeds.

In the short-term Gordon Gekko types who keep repeating that greed is good can benefit a lot from their merciless approach. However, in the long run, the empathy can win you hearts of the loyal clients and business partners, who can stay with you for a very long, long time. So, beware of the greedy guys and appreciate all those people with the appealing empathy levels around you. Cheers!

Greed in really dark and undesirable, and I find it sad when I see people engulfed in it. It seems like a bottomless pit that just can't be filled. Relating to how the other guy might feel can produce win-win situations and promotes trust and caring.Empathy wins from my point of view.

You're right. Trust matters. In fact, trust is the core of business. When you've earned trust, you get repeat business. It does take time to learn to attract people. Experimentation is useful in all phases of business. Yet experimenting in attracting clients is experimenting in how to attract attention, closely followed by developing relationships and trust.

People use the word greed to describe something it's not. Greed is not just wanting "more". Greed is not just making "more". Greed is not just asking for more money. Greed only exists when you think it's ok to make money by hurting people (or ripping people off) on purpose. If you think that's ok then you're a greedy offspring a bitch and you should be slapped down to the ground.

What too many people label as greed is in fact people just fighting for their freedom. People want all sorts of freedom but in this context they want financial freedom so they sell something to make money. That in and of itself will never be greed.

Some will argue that a person has "enough" (according to them) so they shouldn't want any more and if they want more then they're being "greedy". What utter bullshit. What about someone who wants to become a billionaire so they can go out and help poor or starving people? Are they "greedy"? By most definitions yes (because they "want" more than they "need" according to their accusers standards of what is "enough"). I call these people financial bullies and all bullies need to be attacked where they stand.

Empathy (I think) is a good tool because I need to know that someone selling me something understands my needs and desires. They must empathise with my situation so they can offer a decent solution.

If you want to appeal to people's "greed" then you're just attracting idiots and pricks. Instead, try appealing to their desire for freedom; either financial freedom or freedom from their problem.

We all want freedom. It's the main driver for most actions - including commerce. Tell me you understand what I must be going through and show me a way how I can be free of that problem and I'll give you my money.

Interesting post. : ) Thanks Bill. (I really liked that thought.)

Many people think that Millionaires (etc.) are just all about money when, in fact, a great percentage of them really want to provide something great to other People/The World.

As Eben Pgan said in this video (with Tony Robbins) ... "The most valuable and profitable Business skill is compassion." (That Eben defines as "proactive empathy.")
