Robert Greene - The 50th Law - Book Review (How to be FEARLESS)

The Fearful Attitude:

Back in the day, fear was an important and intense tool to keep us alive.
Today our fears are just generalized anxiety from things that aren't even real.
The news and media are manipulating us using this fear response to get our attention.
We massively exaggerate the fear of events in our life.
In times of luxury like ours we allow ourselves to feel normal fearing stupid things.
The more you give-in to fear the more energy and momentum you lose.
This leads to a negative spiral of less confidence and less energy.

Let me assert my firm belief that the only thing we have to fear is fear itself - nameless, unreasoning, unjustified terror, which paralyzes needed efforts to convert retreat into advance. - Revolt

Your attitude defines whether you see your fears as a sign to retreat or as a challenge or an opportunity.
Our environment has never been physically safer in history.
There are limitless opportunities today for every race or sex.
The Fearless Type:

There are 2 ways of dealing with fear:

Passive: seeking to avoid the situation that causes us anxiety.
Postponing decisions that might hurt other peoples feelings.
Choosing comfort and tidiness.
We do this because we feel we are fragile.

Active: going into real fears that could actually cause harm.
We live in relatively comfortable circumstances without dangers, violence or limitations.
Our main goal is usually to maintain our comfort and security.
This is why we become more sensitive to any risk or threat to the statues quo.
Feelings of fear today are vague and troubling, rather than direct and real.

What separates those who go under and those who rise above fear and adversity is their strength of will and hunger for power.
Given enough exposure and time, this reactive fear handling turns into a fearless attitude that is bold, urgent and unconventional.

There are no obstacles that can stand in the way of a person without fear.
For Napoleons army, there shall be no Alps. - Napoleon Bonaparte.
With each fear directly attacked, the fearless type grows stronger and more fearless.
The New Fearless Type:

On the streets of the ghetto, showing fear would make you a target for violence and would make people lose respect towards you.
Fifties near-death experience opened him up to become fearless, he didnt have any money and was dropped from his label company but decided to do it anyway.
The new fearless types are highly suited to todays chaotic and rapidly changing business environment.
Fearless types are not afraid of experimenting, hustling and trying new ways of operating.
The 50th Law:

The greatest fear people have is that of being themselves. They want to be 50 Cent or someone else. They do what everyone else does even if it doesnt fit where and who they are. Buy you get nowhere that way; Your energy is weak and no one pays attention to you. Youre running away from the one thing that you own - that makes you different. I lost that fear. And once I felt the power that I had by showing the world I didnt care about being like other people, I could never go back. - 50 Cent.
We have close to no control over the outcomes and events in our life, but we have exclusive control over 1 thing - the mindset with which we respond to the events around us.
The more you assume a fearless attitude the more your margin of control over circumstances increases.
At the ideal of this mindset, you can literally create the circumstances themselves, which is the source of power that the fearless types have had throughout history.
The 50th Law is characterized by:

Supreme Boldness: this requires a high degree of confidence. Bold acts cause people to either back-off or follow you.
Unconventionality.
Fluidity.
A Sense of Urgency.
Those who follow the 50th Law arent afraid of chaos or change; they embrace it by being as fluid as possible. They move with the flow of events and then gently channel them in the direction of their choice. They convert a negative (unexpected events) into a positive (opportunities).
Having a near death experience or being reminded of the shortness of our life can have a massive dramatic positive therapeutic effect on us.
Your fears impose a direct limit on the set of actions you can take at any given moment and your effectiveness.
Being too afraid of change will actually make you lose in the long run.

The key to assuming the fearless attitude is actually actively seeking and entering the arenas that you shy from:
Making the hard decisions youve been avoiding.
Confronting certain people.
Thinking of yourself and your needs instead of others.
Making the life direction change you dread.
When you put yourself in situations you fear youll always notice your fears were exaggerated and confronting them has actually brought you closer to reality.
When you confront fears there is actually a reversal of fear, you gain self reliance and confidence!
You dont have to grow up in a dangerous environment to develop this attitude, we all face challenges, rivals and setbacks. You can even create dangerous circumstances should you desire to.
Fifty Cent had to confront his fears, you must choose to.
You have 2 choices of attitudes:
An attitude that constricts you in fear.
An attitude that opens up the possibilities of freedom and action.
You always have a choice between a defensive closed attitude, and an open, aggressive and fearless attitude.
Its better to be careless than cautious because fortune favors the bold, not the cautious.
See Things For What They Are - INTENSE REALISM:

We live in a harsh, competitive environment and have a very short number of days in our lives, you must resist the temptation of wishing things were different; instead you must fearlessly accept these circumstances and even embrace them.
By focusing your attention on what is going on around you, you will gain a sharp appreciation for what makes some people advance and others fall behind.

The firmer your grasp of reality, the more power you will have to alter it for your purposes.
The drug hustler living in such dangerous and chaotic environments is actually blessed, for he gains the power of intense reality observation.
The greatest danger we face is our mind going soft.
When things go too good you take you start thinking its for granted and will quickly lose it.
When things go too bad you wish things were different and try to find a foolish scheme to get quick, easy money and then youll fall.

The 50 Cent Code:
Trust No One.
Conceal Your Intentions (Even From Friends).
Remain a Supreme Realist No Matter How High or Low You Become (Stay SHARP and FOCUSED).
No matter how bad things get, never resort to depression or dreaming, always see the world as it is, no matter how ugly.
You have to be extremely urgent in your actions, by your mid twenties your extreme ambition and passion will fade away.
Even when you become successful you have to avoid getting blinded and soft by the glamour and praise, always see reality as it is.
The Fearless Approach:

REALITY IS MY DRUG. THE MORE I HAVE OF IT, THE MORE POWER I GET AND THE HIGHER I FEEL. - 50 Cent
The greatest danger you face is your mind growing soft and your eye getting dull.
When things get tough and you get tired of the grind, your mind tends to drift into fantasies; You wish things were a certain way, and you slowly turn inward to your thoughts and desires.
If things are going well, you become complacent, imagining that you will continue to have what you got forever and stop paying attention; Before you know it you end up overwhelmed by the changes happening to your position.
You need this code more than Fifty. His world was so harsh and dangerous that it forced him into it, your world is much cozier, less violent and less immediately dangerous.

Your inability to cope with reality will sooner or later be your ruin.
Never drift and always assess yourself, the people around you, and your direction in the most cold and brutal light possible, without fear.
Being able to see reality as it is, is a function of character and fearlessness.
You develop this muscles by training it, always pay attention to details, to peoples intentions and to dark realities behind any glamorous surfaces.

What you see determines what you think and how you act.
The moment you believe in some cherished idea that you hold no matter what your eyes and ears reveal to you, you are no longer a realist.
You want to become pragmatic in your approach, judge people by results, not by friendliness or political values.
The genius of Abraham Lincoln was being able to focus intensely on reality and see things for what they were.
Being a pragmatic extreme realist is not depressing, its empowering, and will give you the power to right yourself faster than others when things go wrong.
There is much more satisfaction in intense reality than intense fantasy.

Know the other, know yourself, and the victory will not be at risk. Know the ground, know the natural conditions, and the victory will be total. - Sun Tzu
Your single greatest weapon is your rational, conscious mind. It has the power to expand your vision far and wide, distinguish patterns, learn from the past, glimpse into the future and see through appearances.
Circumstances are conspiring to dull this weapon and render it useless by turning your attention inwards and making you afraid of reality, CONSIDER THIS WAR.
You must turn outwards and become a keen observer of reality and everything around you. You are in battle with all the fantasies that are thrown at you.
You want clarity, not escape and confusion.
Rediscover Curiosity - Openness:

Your greatest asset of superiority is realizing you know nothing. Leave your mind open to experiencing things as they are, this is the source of all knowledge.
The reason we use ignorance is because were afraid of our position of life being challenged.

Imagine you dont know anything, let go of even your most cherished beliefs. Force yourself to hold opposite opinions or see the world through your enemys eyes. See everything as a source for education - even the most banal encounters. Imaging the world is still 100% full of mystery. The more you do this the more opportunities will open up to you.
Know the Complete Terrain - Expansion:

A mediocre general will confine his battle knowledge only to the physical terrain, a supreme general will expand his knowledge by observing everything he can with his eyes or through his firsthand sources.
The reason Napoleon Bonaparte is the greatest general that ever lived is because of the staggering mass of information he absorbed about all the details of the battle, with as few filters as possible.
Always remain open and curious of all levels of information, always look for first-hand information and vary your sources to get a fingertip feel for everything in your environment.

When you dont get to the root of a problem, you cannot solve it in any meaningful manner. People love looking at surfaces, getting emotional and reacting, doing things that feel good in the short-term but do nothing for them in the long-term.
NEVER BE SATISFIED WITH WHAT PRESENTS ITSELF TO YOUR EYES, ALWAYS LOOK FOR WHAT LIES DEEPER, ABSORB IT, AND THEN LOOK DEEPER.
See Further Ahead - Proportion:

The further and deeper we contemplate our future, the greater our capacity to shape it according to our desires.
The more detailed your future long-term plan is the more youre able to make the proper decisions in the present.
This elevation also enables you to avoid events that are not productive and dont lead you forward in your long-term plan.
Look at Peoples Deeds, Not Words - Sharpness:

Everyone is after power, and to get it well occasionally manipulate and even deceive, this is human nature.
Never take peoples maneuvers personally; merely try to defend and advance yourself.
A person who is too friendly to quickly is usually up to no good.
Any excessive behavior is a bad sign.
Pay attention to the details, the little things.
Keep your eye piercing, objective, and nonjudgmental.
Reassess Yourself - Detachment:

You want to keep assessing and observing yourself rigorously as well:
Assess who you are and where youre headed.
Look at your most recent actions as-if they were done by another person.
Assess how you could have done things better:
Avoiding unnecessary battles.
Confronting certain people.
The goal is to have the capacity to adapt and change your behavior by moving closer and closer to reality.
There are times of acting with heart and boldness, without doubt or self-distance; On many occasions however, you need to be able to assess whats happening without ego or emotions coloring your perceptions.
Reversal of Perspective:

Dreamers who act upon emotions, rather than cold assessments of reality, are often the sources of the greatest mistakes in history.
True realists (not cynics who are also delusional) are the true dreamers, because their dreams are rooted in tandem with reality and its applications.

People who cling to their delusions find it difficult, if not impossible, to learn anything worth learning. People under the necessity of creating themselves must examine everything, and soak up learning the way the roots of a tree soak up water. - James Baldwin

CHAPTER 2: MAKE EVERYTHING YOUR OWN - SELF-RELIANCE:

YOUR GOAL IN EVERY MANEUVER IN LIFE MUST BE OWNERSHIP, WORKING THE CORNER FOR YOURSELF. WHEN IT IS YOURS TO LOSE YOU ARE MORE MOTIVATED, MORE CREATIVE, MORE ALIVE. THE ULTIMATE POWER IN LIFE IS TO BE COMPLETELY SELF-RELIANT, COMPLETELY YOURSELF.
The Hustlers Empire:

Human nature is so constituted, that it cannot honor a helpless man, although it can pity him; and even this it cannot do long, if the signs of power do not arise. - Fredrick Douglass

The only way to survive and thrive is to realize youre on your own, learn to make your own decisions, and trust your judgement. Dont ask for what you need but take it. Depend only on your wits.
You can use normal positions of dependance like jobs, to actually experiment and flip the script in order to create your own small empire and practice playground.
The Fearless Approach:

I was born alone and I will die alone. Ive got to do whats right for me and not live my life the way anybody else wants it. - 50 Cent
Your only real possessions that matter are:
Your body.
The time you have to live.
Your energy.
Your thoughts and ideas.
Your autonomy.
The more you conform and depend on others, the less you respect your own natural and actual possessions.

True ownership of your natural assets can only come from a sick disdain for anything or anybody that impinges upon your mobility, from a confidence in your decisions, and from the use of your time in constant pursuit of education and improvement.
If you are in a situations where you must take partners or fit in an organization, you must mentally prepare yourself for the moment you move beyond these momentary entanglements.
Everyone naturally thinks of themselves and their agendas first, occasional affectionate or helpful gestures from people tend to cloud this reality, until you are disappointed, again and again.

You are more alone than you imagine. This should be a source of freedom, not fear. When you know you can get things on your own, you become liberated and no longer depend on waiting for people to do it for you.
EVEN WHILE FALSELY BEING PUT IN PRISON FOR 19 YEARS, RUBIN CARTER WOULD NOT WEAR A PRISON UNIFORM, OR AN ID BADGE. HE WOULD NOT EAT WITH THE PRISONERS, DO THE ASSIGNED TASKS, OR GO TO HIS PAROLE HEARINGS. HE WASNT AFRAID OF THE PUNISHMENTS, ONLY OF LOSING HIS DIGNITY AND SENSE OF OWNERSHIP. HE DID NOT AGREE TO HAVE THE USUAL ENTERTAINMENTS (TELEVISION, RADIO, PORN) BECAUSE HE KNEW HE WOULD GROW DEPENDANT ON THESE WEAK PLEASURES AND THERE WILL BE SOMETHING THAT THE WARDENS WILL BE ABLE TO TAKE AWAY FROM HIM. THESE ARE ALSO MERELY WAYS TO KILL TIME, INSTEAD HE BECAME A VORACIOUS BOOK READER, WROTE AN AUTOBIOGRAPHY, TAUGHT HIMSELF LAW AND TUTORED PRISONERS ABOUT WHAT HE LEARNED EVERY DAY.
We live in a culture that offers and desires dependency, from drugs, to mild pleasures, to jobs (Just Over Broke. Its hard to resist, but once you give in, its like a prison you cannot leave.
When you make the important decision to move on, you must leave nothing to depend on but yourself.
Keys to Fearlessness:

As kids we were fearless but dependant.
As teenagers we rebelled an craved uniqueness and freedom.
As adults we wish to be able to be dependant again.
We tend to forget that people are managed by self-interest, our bosses keep us out of need, not affection. We must build self-reliance.

Step 1: Reclaim Dead Time:
Never be a minion, always be an owner. - Cornelius Vanderbilt
The time we spend working for others is dead time and we cant get it back.
You must use your time as an employee to soak up as much knowledge, skill and information as possible.
Remember: Your boss prefers to keep you in dependent positions. Its in his interest that you dont become self-reliant.

Step 2: Create Little Empires:
Even while being employed, you want to start building small entrepreneurial movements in your job in-order to develop self-reliance.
Always prefer ownership and responsibility over money.

Step 3: Move Higher Up The Food Chain:
You must always move higher and higher up the food chain, where you alone control the direction of your enterprise and depend on no one.

Remember that favors and gifts always have strings attached.
Step 4: Make Your Enterprise a Reflection of Your Individuality:
You must embrace your uniqueness when creating your enterprise, dont seek what others have done.
By being yourself and using your personality you revolutionize the industry.
Reversal of Perspective:

People who are self-sufficient are more comfortable with themselves.
Gaining self-reliance takes great effort and practice.

CHAPTER 3: TURN SHIT INTO SUGAR - OPPORTUNISM:

If one is continually surviving the worst that life can bring, one eventually ceases to be controlled by a fear of what life can bring. - James Baldwin

After a full year of continuous effort, Fifty was about to release his first album and was subsequently shot 9 times. Everything he did up to that point was undone and his momentum was wholly reversed.

When your access to resources and money is scarce, you must learn how to transform every trifling object into some gimmick for making money. Even the worst shit that happens to you can be converted into gold if youre clever enough.
Every single negative thing that happens to you can always be turned around into its positive equivalent or greater.
Every negative is a positive. The bad things that happen to me, I somehow make them good. That means you cant do anything to hurt me. - 50 Cent

Events in life arent negative or positive, theyre neutral, they just happen. You choose to interpret them as negative or positive.
Your fears will cause you to interpret events as setbacks and crises. In such frames of mind, you exaggerate the dangers.
Your focus on the negatives causes you to be cautious, to retreat, to seek calmness and security. This only makes the situation worse.
Instead of becoming discouraged and depressed by downturns, you must see them as wake-up calls, a challenge that you will transform into an opportunity for power. You move to attack, surprising your enemies with boldness. You dont care what people think and this in-turn makes them admire you.

I must make the most of what I have, even the bad stuff, because things arent going to get better on their own; its stupid to wait, tomorrow may bring even worse shit.
No matter how much money or resources youve accumulated, someone WILL try to take them from you, or unexpected events will push you backward. This is just the way life works.
Almost all great military and political triumphs are preceded by some kind of crisis. This is because substantial victory can only come out of a moment of danger and attack.
When things are going well, that is precisely when you must be concerned and vigilant.
Keys to Fearlessness:

We have unbelievable powers with the use of our mind. It is difficult however to use them in a society that emphasizes material means as the answer to everything.

According to society there are few opportunities that exist out there, and if we can seize them we will win. Most of us are waiting fearfully and passively to find them. This constrains our mind to a small circle of possibility. The truth is that the human mind can leverage everything that crosses its path as an opportunity.
Situations of urgency and stress actually focus our mind and make us find solutions and pay attention to details that we would normally miss.
Stressful situations make us realize how much mental power lies untapped within us.
True opportunists dont require urgent, stressful circumstances to become alert and attentive; they act this way daily.
Napoleon Bonaparte was the greatest opportunist in history, no detail escaped his attention and he focused with super intensity on finding even the most trivial aspect of warfare to his advantage.
Napoleon was able to turn even his worst moments into the most devastating counterattacks.

The realization that more resources are not coming and we have to make use of what we have is the most liberating realization an opportunist can have.
Joe Luis used all of his anger and emotions to become a chill, ice-cold boxer. That gave him a huge advantage over his opponents.

An opportunist sees all hindrances as instruments of power. The reason is simple: negative energy that comes at you through some form is energy that can be turned around. When theres no energy theres nothing to react or push against and its harder to motivate yourself.
An enemy that hit you is open to a counterattack.
Bad publicity is a form of attention that can be reframed to your agenda.

Never ignore or fight negative energy, go with it and mold it to your agenda.
Look For Turning Points:

Opportunities exist in any field of tension (competition, anxiety, chaos); Something important is going on and if you are able to determine the underlying cause, you can create yourself a powerful opportunity.
People fear the new, and you can actually use this opportunity by being the first to give meaning to some apparent disorder, by establishing it as a positive value. Dont look for fads, look for deep-rooted changes in peoples tastes.
Move Before You Are Ready:

The motivation and energy you bring into the encounter have three times as much weight as your physical resources.
You can overcome almost any obstacle and create opportunities out of nothing with the right energy.
Reversal of Perspective:

Most people think of opportunists as people who will do anything for themselves with no values; in reality opportunism is a great art that was studied and practiced by many ancient cultures.
People who cannot dynamically adapt at-will, who miss opportunities, are the ones who deserve our scorn.

Stoics refer to every event as fate. When you complain and rail against circumstances, you fall out of balance with the natural state of things; you wish things were different. You must instead accept the fact that all events occur for a reason and that all negative events can be turned into their equivalent or greater positives.
THIS MENTAL ATTITUDE IS A FIRE THAT CONSUMES AND BURNS EVERYTHING IN ITS PATH - ALL CIRCUMSTANCES BECOME CONSUMED IN YOUR MENTAL HEAT AND CONVERTED INTO OPPORTUNITIES. A MAN OR WOMAN WHO BELIEVES THIS CANNOT BE HURT BY ANYTHING OR ANYONE.
WITHOUT A DOUBT, PRINCES BECOME GREAT WHEN THEY OVERCOME DIFFICULTIES AND AND HURDLES PUT IN THEIR PATH. WHEN FORTUNE WANTS TO ADVANCE A NEW PRINCE, SHE CREATES ENEMIES FOR HIM, MAKING THEM LAUNCH CAMPAIGNS AGAINST HIM SO THAT HE IS COMPELLED TO OVERCOME THEM AND CLIMB HIGHER ON THE LADDER THAT THEY HAVE BROUGHT HIM. THEREFORE, MANY JUDGE THAT A WISE PRINCE MUST SKILLFULLY FAN SOME ENMITY WHENEVER THE OPPORTUNITY ARISES, SO THAT IN CRUSHING IT HE WILL INCREASE HIS STANDING - NICCOLO MACHIAVELLI

CHAPTER 4: KEEP MOVING - CALCULATED MOMENTUM:

Instead of relying on 1 monopoly in his hustle business, Fifty opted to use 4-5 streams of income and work the ones that provide the best results. He chose to avoid friction as much as possible.
Even as a rapper in corporate America, Fifty chose to always use 4-5 different streams of income. He associated with Vitamin Water, a line of books, an alliance with General Motors and Pontiac; if one venture failed he would learn and move on.
The Fearless Approach:

50 Cent is a person I created. Soon it will be time to destroy him and become somebody else. - 50 Cent.
Humans create a feeling of control by holding on to certain beliefs and ideas that give us a sense of consistency and order. This hunger for control makes it that much harder for us to adapt.
Forcing people to do what we want will make them resentful and they will inevitably sabotage us or assert themselves against our will.

The harder we try to control things the more likely we are to lose control in the long-run.
Fluidity is true control, not power.

When you try to manually change lifes ever changing pace and rhythm by holding onto things or people, you fall behind. Your actions become awkward because they arent in relation to present circumstances. This is like moving against a current as opposed to using it to propel you forward. You must let go of your need to control. This means you no-longer view change and chaos as something to fear, but rather as a source of excitement and opportunity.
In social situations you want to adapt to the persons energy and divert it in your direction.
What seems as chaos is often merely a series of event that are new and hard to figure out. By absorbing more of these chaotic moments with an open spirit, you can glimpse a pattern, a reason its occurring, and how you can exploit it.
If you can maintain mental and social fluidity, you will gain a degree of freedom beyond the physical confines of the situations.
Most people are rigid and predictable; that makes them easy targets. Your fluid and unpredictable strategies will drive them insane, they cannot foresee your next move or figure you out. That is often enough to make them give way or fall apart.
Keys to Fearlessness:

Many times in life we get into a good flow of wins, this will usually go on until we inevitably disrupt it. Perhaps we overreach with an action that breaks the spell, or we keep repeating the same thing over and over until it doesnt work.
The 4 Types of Flow:

Mental Flow: You must dramatically widen your fields of interest and study, and open up your mind to new knowledge and ideas.
Emotional Flow: You must learn to move from emotion to emotion without attaching to any of them. Learn how to counterbalance, when angry focus on love, when fearful focus on boldness.
Social Flow: You must learn to provide a framework for people to work in, and allow room for the project to be shaped by the people in it.
Cultural Flow: You must keep changing your style and actions with the trends, work with young blood to always keep up with the times.
Reversal of Perspective:

You must keep changing and adapting, being able to call up qualities that are necessary for the moment and being able to bend to circumstances.

You have nothing to fear from moments of transition, you welcome and even create them. Whenever you feel rooted and established in place, that is when you should be truly afraid.
CHAPTER 5: KNOW WHEN TO BE BAD - AGGRESSION:

The hustlers every waking hour is lived with both the practical and the subconscious knowledge that if he ever relaxes, if he ever slows down, the other hungry, restless foxes, ferrets, wolves, and vultures out there with him wont hesitate to make him their prey. - Malcolm X

Talent and good intentions are never enough in this world; you need to be fearless and strategic.
The Fearless Approach:

The way I learned it, the kid in the school yard who doesnt want to fight always leaves with a black eye. If you indicate youll do anything to avoid trouble, thats when you get in trouble. - 50 Cent
When you settle on less than you want its not because youre good and nice, but because you are fearful.
If people sense you are the type that accepts and submits, they will push and push until they form an exploitative relationship with you. You must demonstrate that you have clear lines that will not be crossed. That they will pay a price for trying to push you around.

By a paradoxical law of human nature, trying to please people less will make them more likely in the long run to respect and treat you better.
Key to Fearlessness:

We are living in a split society that encourages cooperation and being nice but advertises those who are bad.
We do things half-heartedly, we dont know how to truly be good but we also dont know how to good.
Our most common foes:

Aggressors: when being actively targeted by people make sure to stay cool and calculated, and make sure you do whatever you can to make them more emotional, baiting them to fall apart through their own reckless energy.
Passive Aggressors: passive aggressive people disguise their attacks and confuse you, making you become emotional in the proccess. You musnt let passive aggressors make you emotional or drawn to their confusing intrigues. The only way to treat these types is with bold, uncompromising actions that either discourage further nonsesnse or sends them running away.
Unjust Situations: you can craft changes to these situations by either directly stating your intentions and opening yourself up to critisizm and polarity, or by concealing your intentions and baiting your enemy into actions that will win you sympathy.
Static Situations: often those in power create static situations to maintain their power. You must be less respectful of the rules other people have established. There is great power to be had in initiating a new order.
Impossible Dynamics: when you are in a bad relationship where youre being exploited for any reason, the only viable solution would be to terminate the relationship. No arguing, bargaining or compromising. They must become dead to you so you can go on with your life.
Reversal of Perspective:

You must stay calm and detached, realize that conflict is simply a part of life and cant be avoided by those who care about their well-being.
CHAPTER 6: LEAD FROM THE FRONT - AUTHORITY:

No man can properly command an army from the read. He must be at the front.. At the end of the army. He must be seen there, and the effect of his mind and personal energy must be felt by every officer and man present with it - General William T.Sherman

There are kings in the market who are untouchable. These people have likely taken moves in the past that demonstrated they are ruthless and fearless. People shriek in a mix of fright and admiration by merely thinking about their name and so they are not challenged.
The group tends to assume the spirit and energy of the leader. A leader who is audacious, out in front, and setting the tone and agenda for the group sparks a higher energy level and confidence.
Any titles, money or privileges you have are merely hindrances that delude you into believing you are owed respect.
Only your actions can prove your worth. In a world full of fakery and hype, you will stand out as someone authentic and worthy of respect.
Its better to be feared and respected than to be loved.

The famous director John Ford learned that being nice would not work. He opted instead to be feared and respected. He would say only a few, well-chosen words about what he wanted from his actors; then, if they did the wrong thing on set, he would brutally humiliate them in front of everyone. People had to concentrate and pay attention to every word he said and his body language. This made them bring a lot more of themselves into the parts they played.
This made John a legend, people would die to work for him and his extremely high standards made the most out of people. The end result of his tough and unforgiving manner was complete control and the highest production quality.
Leaders are often required to make tough choices and get people to do things against their will. If youve chosen the soft, pleasing style of leadership out of fear of being disliked, youll find yourself with less and less room to compel people to work harder or make sacrifices.
If you do the opposite and build a reputation of toughness and results, people might resent you, but you will establish a foundation of respect.
Keys to Fearlessness:

For it is a general rule of human nature that people despise those who treat them well and look up to those who make no concessions. - Thurydides
The 4 Major Leadership Roles:

The Visionary: You must become emotionally obsessed with your goals and vision, and be able to paint alluring pictures of the future you want to help create. Your own level of excitement and self-belief will convince people that you know where youre going and should be followed.
The Unifier: The natural dynamic of any group is to splinter into factions. People want to protect their narrow interests, so they form political alliances from within. You must therefore give the group a unified goal or vision to go after so that the group sticks together through the differences they have.
The Role Model: Napoleon Bonaparte would hire lieutenants and generals infused with his mission and ideals. He would give each of them a direct results he needed to create and give them full permission to do whatever it takes, as long as they achieve the goal.
The Bold Knight: Every group has a collective energy, structure and inertia. This comes from a powerful desire to keep things comfortable, easy and familiar. The larger the group the harder it is to change the way it functions; this incites a feeling of passivity and depression. You must keep leading with energy, passion and initiative to maintain the excitement of working with and for you.
Reversal of Perspective:

A distinguished commander without boldness is unthinkable. No man who is not bold can play such a role, and therefore we consider this quality the first prerequisite of the great military leader. How much of this quality remains by the time he reaches senior rank, after training and experience have affected and modified it, is another question. The greater the extent to which it is retained, the greater the range of his genius. - Carl von Clausewitz

CHAPTER 7: KNOW YOUR ENVIRONMENT FROM THE INSIDE OUT - CONNECTION:

The public is never wrong. When people dont respond to what you do, theyre telling you something loud and clear. Youre just not listening. - 50 Cent

All living creatures are dependant on their environment. If they are sensitive to changes, opportunities and dangers they have much more power to dominate their surroundings.
When we meet people or individuals with different values and beliefs we feel threatened and tend to demonize them. Alternatively we may look at them through the prism of our own values and assume they share them.
We live in a nuanced society and our ability to detect changes will be our greatest asset in changing with the times.
The fearless types arent afraid to keep their mind open and constantly learn from experience.
Keys to Fearlessness:

Few people have the wisdom to prefer the criticism that would do them good, to the praise that deceives them. - Francois de La Rochefoucauld
In the work we produce there comes the moment when we release our work and it reaches the public, it then ceases to be something in our hands and starts being judged by others.
4 Strategies to be Close to Your Audience:

Crush All Distance: the fearless are not afraid to absorb the frustrations, aspirations and resentments of their audience. This makes them aligned with the audience and enables them to speak their language.
Open Information Channels of Criticism and Feedback.
Reconnect With Your Base: you must always stay connected to your core audience, this will keep you in connection with your mission and motivations.
Create the Social Mirror: If your work doesnt connect with others its because you didnt make your ideas clear enough and you failed to emotionally connect with your audience. Use the responses or lack of them you get as mirrors for perfecting your work.
Reversal of Perspective:

To study anything we must come at it with a detached perspective void of preconceived notions.

A really intelligent man feels what other men only know. - Baron de Montesquieu
