What's your opinion on this?

Hey Warriors,

I've been reading a lot of motivation & self help books lately.

Some people say you should be who you are and stay true to yourself, however, I know in the business industry a lot of people milk their way to the top.

I'm curious what your opinion on this?

Can you really make it to the top by being true to yourself?

I hardly think so, not that I doubt it, but the chances are very slim imo.

The answer is definitely yes, you can.

A better question would be, is it even worth it to make it to the top if it requires you to sell out your values or pretend to be someone else?

I would say it's probably not worth it if I'm pretend to be someone else. But if you ask me, I would say I'm in it to get the money and then get out.

This internet biz is driving me nuts. I'm frustrated because I can't get people to listen to me for once.

In business, we're taught to be honest and ethical, but in reality if you're honest you get no business.

Let's face it, a lot of people are not seasoned marketers. I don't have people who like me on social media. I don't have the type of personality that other seasoned marketers have, and I'm being honest but I get nowhere. Maybe I'm too nice? And even the friends I have; no one does business with me.

Start looking for another profession; IM is probably not for you because of your current mindset. Maybe come back after a while to see if your attitude changed a bit towards good. Why don't you start working for an Internet company 9-5 job; you will learn a lot over there. Any Internet forum can't buy you out your current situation, its your experience and skill sets that set you apart from the crowd. Many marketers here earn a lot because they see things much differently. Change your attitude, change your destiny. Another thing always be true to yourself, always.

I don't believe so much in mindset. I believe in goal settings and taking the necessary steps to achieve my goals.

When I see the value in something, I go and get it even if it cost a bit more. I don't procrastinate.

A lot of people are just wishful thinkers. You can't make them to do anything. They're just all talk and talk but can't show up. I do me. Fk what everyone else say.

I don't believe everyone is sincere in internet marketing. How do I know? I've been surrounded by scammers. I've been surrounded by people who are frustrated just like me at this point. Everyone's been through here, it doesn't mean they have a negative mindset. Some people have completely given up, they don't feel the burning desire anymore. They're not passionate anymore.

As for me, I am still passionate, this is why I am still here. I am still able to type and keep it going while others don't give a complete sh*t anymore. So in this sense I can honestly say that I am still true to myself. I'm just hurt because people don't pay me attention. These are the ones I need to get rid of.

Nothing could be further from the truth. You are your own worst enemy. Prospective buyers don't gravitate to marketers that have no confidence, no sincerity, and who are only "in it for the money." They see right through you.

The biggest and best change you could make in yourself is to quit focusing on yourself and your incessant want for money. Instead, focus on how you can assist and give value to your audience. It's not just a change in mindset - it's a change in attitude, greed, and your feeling that everyone is against you. Your focus is on imaginary fears and non-existent obstacles to creating a business. Start simple and small, help people in your niche, be genuinely kind and pleasant. Get rid of that dark cloud that hangs over your head and makes you skeptical of others.

If you won't change yourself, no one else is going to, and you will continue to fail.

Sometimes "being true to yourself" requires changing yourself to become what you really want to be.

I've been myself for too long and get nowhere.

Marketing is about using smart tactics and strategies. Nobody is going to make a sales letter with zero income as their proof. You gotta hype it somehow to make it appear"real". If everyone is being honest nobody would make any money because in reality most people make jack.

As for me, I don't take everything too serious. I learn to laugh and have fun. Just be goofy. But every time I see a sales letter I always questioned it. I will ask to show proof of income, not a photoshop image. I need to see bank account. And guess what. Many pple talk a lot but can't show up. I actually respect people who don't make money than a marketer who make huge incomes claims and cant back it up.

You're only saying this because you think like a marketer or is a marketer yourself.

But the vast majority of prospect are not marketers - they don't think like you. They have no idea about monetization. They don't know the strategy marketers use to get traffic and turn subscriber into sales.

I have seen salespeople over and over at coffee shops l go to, and yeah, being sick just about covers it!

They act like the prospects best friend, and this investment is wonderful, and you will get it back in blah, blah.

But all they give a s***t about is making "Salesperson of the month" and if the prospect loses all of their lifes savings then tough.

I see what you mean and I totally understand that... but that's not my problem because I don't push people to buy things from me. I used to be like that when i was in Network Marketing, though.

What I'm doing now is have people find me. I don't chase people.

hell the vast majority of people claiming to want to make a lot of money in IM have no clue how to do those things either ..and get sucked in to the next sales letter promising they can make a lot of money with little work.

I mainly took up the study marketing to try and make money..then it morphed into why i have about or had 70 percent of the beliefs i did ..

so it is defensively important to study marketing to control and change your beliefs ..if you know how the outside world has used marketing to implant beliefs ..

Well your question seems to be incomplete and its entirely dependent on who your true self is! And what you define as top of business. Do you want to be CEO of Apple? Have an affiliate business and make $200K a year? Both these people think they are living the life and being true to their selves.

The common true self denominator...both are prepared to work hard for what they want and make their own destiny. To be perfectly honest that is probably 10% of us. The true self of the rest of us is probably much more of a follower...nothing bad or to be ashamed of. You can still rise to great heights...think Steve Ballmer, following Bill Gates or Tim Cook following Steve Jobs. What is wonderful about life is you get to define it on your terms and my advice would be to get outside the US for a bit and see how cultures who are less wrapped up in the "Capitalist Dream" define success...while doing very well.

What's the big deal about making it to the top? This isn't showbiz or Major League Baseball. All you need to do to be successful in business is provide a valuable service and find folks willing to pay you for it.

Start by ditching all those navel-gazing "self-help" books and switch your focus away from yourself.

I apologized in advance if I did offended anyone. I don't have a lot of friends on my Facebook page. I would say under 300 "friends" at most for now. I have 3 Facebook fan pages in different niche. I personally create memes and video memes related to the niche and share them on my timeline. None of those 300 friends share them, yet they will share other people memes posts. I think I've lost reputation. I think they don't trust me for some reasons. If they know it's me they won't even like my status or share any of my post. I may need new circle and stop trying to please everyone.

It is true that the IM world has many scammers. I've been scammed before myself. But the internet also has many more people genuinely looking for solutions to their problems, latest developments in their interest, relationships with other like-minded people etc.

I would say you should be true to yourself because if you put up a false front, sooner or later you'll be found out. But be positive rather than negative. I'm not saying you are a negative person but I'm saying we all have a negative side of ourselves. Show your positive side. People will eventually respect your sincerity. That way, you win their trust. People will only do business with those whom they trust.

yeah when you don't have enough people on your facebook page or contact list to really make a go at marketing online .. removing the few people in your real social network will do wonders ..

you need to massively increase your contact by 100 to 1000 times not reduce your current small pool of contacts ..

If you add people into your live you exchange value with ..the people who don't serve you and arn't family fall away ..

forget the concept of internet marketing as i think a lot of people few it . what do you have to offer to people that they will find valuable enough to give you money to get it from you .. and who are these people, then what is the best avenue out of the 200 different ways you can connect with people online and growing ..

people can make a ton of money online marketing stuff and never write a sales letter or market through email .

what are your best methods of connecting with people online

Lol, this thread gets more funnier by the hour. Most of your friends and family will do a runner, than help you, and if they do offer advise it will be ill advised to accept it. Experience gives wisdom, not doing nothing and offering advise.

Geesh, and l am glad you are still trying but,.....

Give up, lol, l have a neighbor that was unemployed and l overheard that he went online and said, "this doesn't work" a week later.

! week, most give up after 5 years, and are bitter and p*** that they put in all of that effort for nothing.

I never give up, and am well on my way to the top income level within the next few years. But it has taken me almost 10 years.

Social Media, geesh, stop p**** away your time with that crap. It is crap, or a dog with a lot of fleas.

Sincere, lol, l will be as sincere as you want. I am doing flyers which has a steep workload, but is doing well.

But l won't share my secrets with you, business is business.

And self help, been there, read a pile of them, and you might find that at the end of each, you feel motivated, and usually want to read it again, but the book does p*** all in actually turning your dreams into reality.

Visualizing your goals also does p*** all, apart from motivating you for the short term.

So, my advise from a seasoned marketer!

Cut back on the motivational books, they only motivate, and the only ones that helped me where, "Talk and Grow Rich", and "Rich Dad, Poor Dad".

Dont bother with all of that goal setting, dream boards, and motivational videos crap. They only work for the short term and p*** you off long term.

If you see your dream car, then act like it is yours, etc, Same with houses, etc. That is enough and you won't burn out long term, not achieving it.

Most if not all of your friends will desert you, so don't worry about them.

And most of your family will probably think that you are nuts, but that is ok, nuts goes both ways.

You Do not need to scam anyone to get the mansion on a hill!

Sounds like you are trying to sell others products or create your own, and have the "how do l create a video showing huge cashflows?

Most just get a second mortgage and ask their family members to get a Clickbank account and buy their s***t, so it looks good on a video.

Even live video can be easily faked.

And the best advise l can offer you!

Ditch everything and put all of your efforts into Pre-traffic hub sites only!

Or sites with their own traffic.

Graphicriver, (or one of their other sites) Creative Market, and a few others, have their own traffic, so the biggest hurdle to making it online is gone.

Took me 6 years to figure that out.

Forget about Fiverr, that is only get paid for doing something.

    Good luck.

tag i think you would be safe from real competition if you told 1000 people your secrets .. what you wouldn't be safe from is the 30 people who tried to do it .. but 29 of them substitute key parts of the formul and screw it up then whine that it doesn't work.. 1 person might be competition in 2-4 years..out of a thousand though that being generous .. it might need 5000 people to get that 1 ...but that be having to lsten to 100-300 people whine about how it doesn't work ..

i am not a believer in much of the motivational stuff as it is presented in the motivation industry .. after all we use 100 percent of our brain and not ten .. and the only effective annecdotal story of vision boards was that one guy from the secret .. who every else just repeats that story about .

you do have to have a vision of what you want to get.. from there you break it down into goals to get there .. but i remember the problem whe reading 10 years ago or longer before i stopped reading motivational books because they all seemed to be trying to upsell a audio course, get you into the nearest workshop put on by the author, or get you into pricey coaching courses .. oh yeah that was the main problem.. or increase the author fees on a speaking tour ..

youtube is much better to spend your time on listening to motivation stuff and watching interviews between successful people and picking out the stuff that gets talked about over and over ..you can probably get more useful information listening or watch speaches by jack ma founder of alibaba for five hours .. than reading 20 self help books ..

my main goal isn't wealth yet ..and not interestd in a mansion on a hill or in a vally or anywhere .. i use to write the huge damn house goal down after reading a motivational book .. but i don't need much indoor living space ..i want a smallish hous that is mortgage free real soon after buying it.. and several acers or a couple hectars of land i can put a food forest and a fish pond in .. so much of the year i can harvest most of the food i eat just walking around the yard .

so long term goals house no mortgage, built to need as little energy to heat and cool and most of the food i eat comes from my land .

but i might want to go somewhat bigger .. and have like 10 to 15of thes small houses on 20 or so acers or 9 hectare or with food forest around the houses to sell it as fresh organic food paradise so people come and gorge themselve on fresh organic food for a week or two and pay a premium ..

but then there is the thinking big the hundred acre 45 plus hectare food forest resort with 60-90 units sold with the same kind of marketing.. that then can be duplicated

    ahh crap haha

i am not a believer in much of the motivational stuff as it is presented in the motivation industry .. after all we use 100 percent of our brain and not ten .. and the only effective annecdotal story of vision boards was that one guy from the secret .. who every else just repeats that story about .

you do have to have a vision of what you want to get.. from there you break it down into goals to get there .. but i remember the problem whe reading 10 years ago or longer before i stopped reading motivational books because they all seemed to be trying to upsell a audio course, get you into the nearest workshop put on by the author, or get you into pricey coaching courses .. oh yeah that was the main problem.. or increase the author fees on a speaking tour ..

youtube is much better to spend your time on listening to motivation stuff and watching interviews between successful people and picking out the stuff that gets talked about over and over ..you can probably get more useful information listening or watch speaches by jack ma founder of alibaba for five hours .. than reading 20 self help books ..

my main goal isn't wealth yet ..and not interestd in a mansion on a hill or in a vally or anywhere .. i use to write the huge damn house goal down after reading a motivational book .. but i don't need much indoor living space ..i want a smallish hous that is mortgage free real soon after buying it.. and several acers or a couple hectars of land i can put a food forest and a fish pond in .. so much of the year i can harvest most of the food i eat just walking around the yard .

so long term goals house no mortgage, built to need as little energy to heat and cool and most of the food i eat comes from my land .

but i might want to go somewhat bigger .. and have like 10 to 15of thes small houses on 20 or so acers or 9 hectare or with food forest around the houses to sell it as fresh organic food paradise so people come and gorge themselve on fresh organic food for a week or two and pay a premium ..

but then there is the thinking big the hundred acre 45 plus hectare food forest resort with 60-90 units sold with the same kind of marketing.. that then can be duplicated

      ahh crap haha
Perhaps, but from what l have seen, competition is near zero, or possibly zero.

And l prefer to keep it that way for as long as is possible.

As for goals, my main goal is to make as much money as possible, and then worry about making too much later on.

I don't need vision boards, and all of that crap for that, (did all of that for years on end, and watched the secret, which is nice, but gives a too narrow a view).

I have waited a lifetime for something like this, so will stay in Greedy Ba**ard mode for the forseeable future.

But in a nice way of course, lol.

i think goals are important but most will fail if they write the goals and construct the vision for their future from the list of goals .

though i believe in the law of attraction .. i basically think you should work to feel better because feeling better is it's own reward .. not if i feel better the universe will give me stuff .. i believe we are here to learn and grow so the law of attraction supports that verse .. the happy thinking spoiled child view that the secret had .

I want to lose weight and eat better the law off attraction leads me to all kind of recipieces i can cook that are tasty and less fattening.. verse like waiting to have the foods just manifest ..

most people have no idea how the car they drive in works .. but they get in turn the key and go .. if we treated our cars , email , cell phones ..like the law of attraction .. you would write an email .. then studdy how it gets from one point to another ..and try to pick out the best path and deman the email go along the the path you chose ....or you would spend a monthor six learning how every part of the engine worked before learning to drive the thing ..

I had a main thing backwards all my life .. i had lots of problems that i thought i first had to learn to make much more money to fix ..but the last year and a half and the last to month especially where i have been surviving week to week and then every week looking out a few days and thinking heck i might be homeless on sunday ..nd this week i need the law of attraction to save my ass again or i will be homeless sunday .

anyway i know where i want to be in 5 years or the situation.. the where and what i will do to get there is not fully clear ..

I have had to fix a lot of mindset and belief issues and do a major amount of regenerative work on my health ..and honed in on my best life ..

i feel better than i have through most of my life and it's only come about in the last fer weeks ..after the missery i have gone through most of my life ..this is a taste of success that can not be measured with dollar signs ..

now that i have this i want to build my life to feel like this as much as possible.. and i am getting much better at snapping into it when i start going off and panicing and worrying ..

I've done my time soul searching in the Desert hehe ..

Yeah, did that, but the thing is if the planets are not in your favour then, you can try all you want and you will make progress, but it will be slow going.

That is one l ignored, and 9 years later when all of the planets were in my favour then it all happened.

Some will call this luck, but when you look at numbers then it isn't.

We have favorable times, and the rest we are preparing for the favorable times.

the mafia built vegas the bodies are burried else where lol ..

and soon there will be no rattle snakes because the ones with the dysfuntional rattles that don't rattle have better predator(human) avoidence and don't scare their prey off ..so better survival and breeding chances ..

i can drink 2-3 gallons of water a day this time of year because i sweat really bad when i am moving around when it is near freezing ..this time of year i am out in 100- 110 degree heat 7-9 hours a day and can easily drin 30-40 ounces of water an hour ..

90 percent of people would end up in the hospital after a few days because this much water even in this kind of heat would be toxic and drown their organs and i may go close to 4 gallons some days .

they are currently in the process of throwing out the lists of healthy and unhealthy food and the standard glycimic index..and to really know what is healthy or not healthy to eat..you would need monitoring of your metabolic response to the food you eat 24 hours a day and genetic test ..that show what your genetic factors are ..

Amm, not sure what you mean by average, but when l am driving down to the local shopping centre, and see km's of cars coming back from work, then it becomes obvious.

A skilled graphic artist could do what l am doing, but not before going through hell first.

I expect about 2% of the western worlds population would make it, and because of the 98/2% ratios, makes them above average.

Dates perhaps, but try to do something in a month when the planets are against you, and it will be considerably harder.

the misleading part of averages .. tends to be that people think a majority of the figures used shoudl be close to average .

world average income is 10,000 Usd per year

1 percent of the population make 35,000 usd or more
80 percent of the population makes 10$ USD or less or 3650 usd a year
and half the world population makes 2.50 usd a day or 912$ a year

now probably 50-60 percent or more of the economic transaction in the world done in low dollar amounts under 200 dollars are not accounted for in the figures ..so income of many in poverty may be higher than reported.. but still not close to average .

name me the married couple who has 2.3. 3.1 or 1.7 kids .. and don't be mean and say because the average kid should way one amount you can get the a real fat kid can be counted as 1.5 kids ..

so buckle up on your way to the shopping cente .. a majority of those drivers comming home are below average drivers ..

here in Vegas we call them Taxi drivers

Hi Odahh -- so are things getting better for you. It sounds like you're going through hard times, but bouncing back. Am I correct on that?

I've been there - and honestly not completely settled yet (single father raising 3 kids - it can be hard).

I tried to follow what noobz was saying -- but it didn't seem like he was taking in what everyone was telling him. I really hope he re-reads some of those responses he got, because some were spot on. Integrity has to come first. Also, you can't just do IM stuff and think that you have a business. You have to create real value and actually build a business (and IM is just your secret sauce that makes everything happen). But, sadly a lot of people don't get that.

Anyway - let me know how things are going for you. If there is anything I can do to help, let me know. Cheers.

the trying part of the hard times i am in ..is that the money has drained out of my hustle the last month..not matter how much effort i put in ..based on many thing outside of my control and i have been barly hanging on ..financially ..but i only have myself to worry about at this point .. i stopped drinking 2 weeks ago and a few other thing have balanced out ..
i have gone through harder .. i was stuck in a bad situation before i came to vegas.. for basically my entire life .. and doing what i have been doing to support myself while i have been here has also allowed me to sort out a lot of issues in my life and put them behind me and heal much of the damage to my body from the work i used to do and being expose to high level of black mold for 3-4 years or more in the House i lived in before .

the drinking served a purpose .. then it stopped serving a purpose and i got tired of it .. and the way events are playing out .. i am not being allowed to get stuck again i know the thing i need to do to finsh the physical healing process .. and i have to move to the next stop on the road of life which is looking like Hawaii ..and i have long term goals i can pull off in Hawaii ..but it's figureing out how to get the money to get there .. and how i will make money once there .

Now i had no idea what i would do when i can to Vegas and only enough money for a few months and i have kept a roof over my head and food in my belly for almost a year and a half without punching a clock or breaking any real laws ..

I have completed what i needed to do to grow here .. now it is a matter of moving on in the journey

Wow -- that's a lot to go through. Congrats on kicking the drinking. That will serve you big time in the months and years to come.

Also, your story is inspiring and that is another thing that will serve you as well.

As I said - I'm dealing with some challenges as well, but I'm working through.

I don't know if it would help or not, but would be glad to chat sometime and maybe can brainstorm some ideas and figure out what your options are. Send me a PM and we can figure out the best way to connect.

Main thing is to keep on that journey and keep taking the next step. If I can help with that in any way, I'll be glad to do what I can. Cheers and best wishes Odahh!!

A lot of motivation & self help books are just crap.
If you want to truly "true to yourself" first you have to find your core.
Joseph Campbell calls it "bliss" and there is a famous quote about this.
The same concept may be found in different initiatory practices under different names (e.g. "true will")

Then it depends what you mean by "making it to the top". Corporate/career or business/self-made? (smart politics? or smart selling?)

You could sacrifice lots of people on your way to the top but you have to ask yourself "Can I live with myself?" Those people that "milked their way" ... Could you do it, could you live with yourself?

I think that yes, you can "stay true to yourself" but you may have to strengthen your confidence and self-esteem.

Also, to what extent do the means matter if you consider the end result ethical? (to what extent are you Machiavellian?) Some ethical questions are very murky indeed ... To lit a light is to cast a shadow.

Geesh, and this is your first post here,...respect!

Most newbies and others would drool over an Anthony Robbins, p**** against a wall, 1k fest, or a motivational book about a rich industrialist makes a few billion in half an hour, (that really helps someone online).

forget about helping them online there is a lot people can do offline .. but because the motivational industry is built for mlms .. and speakers who want the big checks for speaking to corporations ..or was ..that was falling off then they pulled out the secret/law off attraction ..

it is generally not geared to really help most people .but you can blames the faults of normal people not the design of the industry ..it bleeds into the opportunity porn industry .. oh here is how you can be macking what you make in a year in a month ..

bla .. there is an exponential growth in opportunities that may provide a decent income but will not get someone rich.. but will mean they support themselves without a job .. everything is so geared for getting rich or massive success ..

It's like when you hype up a person who is poor or broke ..and try to motivate them that they should want to get rich ..

it like going up to someon 100 pounds over weight and trying to motivate them to put in the effort to be high performing athletes or competitive body builders .. because it's not enough if you get them down to a healthy weight and into much better health .

it's completely anecdotal .. but the more gyms and fitness facilities .. the more fat people you will have in an area . when the false belief is to lose weight and get in shape you need to eat food that has no taste and spend hours in the gym/fitness club .. people who like the taste of food and don't want to go someplace to work out ..just accept they will just get fatter

see you can't have the peasents serfs earning money in ways that those avove them can take 90 percent of the vlue they create .. even the motivational industry fell in line ..

I think the tony Robbins of the lasr 4 years has a lot more practical teaching than in the past.

It is time to take gratitude to the next level. The grid is approaching a tipping point. We must learn how to lead joyous lives in the face of selfishness.

Our conversations with other storytellers have led to an ennobling of pseudo-quantum consciousness. Humankind has nothing to lose. We are at a crossroads of passion and ego.

If you have never experienced this oasis on a cosmic scale, it can be difficult to vibrate. How should you navigate this pranic universe? Although you may not realize it, you are dynamic.

The complexity of the present time seems to demand an invocation of our brains if we are going to survive.

Science is the driver of guidance. Nothing is impossible. The goal of superpositions of possibilities is to plant the seeds of balance rather than ego.

It can be difficult to know where to begin. Wanderer, look within and awaken yourself. The world is calling to you via four-dimensional superstructures. Can you hear it?

The problem with "self help" books is they focus all the attention on "me me me". I've known many people who read 'self help' and all the 'icky sticky' stuff...and haven't known one who has changed anything except having more "self help" quotes to spout. If I want quotes, I go to despair.com and read the funny stuff.

For me, self help and motivational books are a cure for insomnia - I don't think I've ever gotten past page 5 in one of them before falling asleep. Don't know if that means I don't need 'improvement' or that I'm beyond help. Whatever.

As for the 'question' - No, I can't be other than what I am - but that's good enough. I don't have to be 'better than' or 'tougher than' or 'richer than' anyone else. Most people seem to like me - but if they don't, that's ok. I don't need approval or attention - don't need a cheering squad. If I tried to look in the mirror and do 'affirmations', I'd crack myself up.

if you are going to study the law of attraction at all .. listen to all the free content from Abraham hicks.. everything else is spun and coppied from that work.. and even though they where taken out of the secret.. they probably made more money than everyone else involved combined .. at least the ones who are not in jail for fraud or cooking to death people who paid a lot of money to be in a purification sauna ..

quickest path to joy and happiness.. lick a crystal place it in your rectum .. sit on a pillow in the lotus position.. and ohmm real deep so your abdomen vibrates..

(please i hope people realize i was jokeing )

There's nothing better than being true to yourself no matter what you do. How can you put proper attention if it is against your will?
On the other hand, business men have different ways of making it to the top; others rely on their capabilities while some seek for the help of the professionals or specialists.
I think, either can work. But you have to actually love what you are doing first and set realistic goals.
    Cheers!
