I am the problem. I have failed.

I've finally come to the hard-truth that I am the problem.

I suck at internet marketing. I have built many lists over the years (my latest has 1,000+ subscribers), but I cannot get my members to take action on anything.

It doesn't matter if it is free, cheap, high-quality, or if I am way over-delivering.

My subscribers are not doing anything.

How can I actually succeed as an internet marketer (specifically with email marketing)?

I am willing to accept that I am the problem, but I don't know how to fix it, or even how to get started moving in the right direction. Thoughts? Ideas? Tough love?

If you can take action, setup and grow the business that you have, and put together a well-written and insightful post like we have above, then I truly see no reason why you can't succeed.

First up, unless the private messages are from Regional Warrior (the messages of which, if they had mass, would be worth their weight in gold), ignore PMs. You're in a situation where you should rely on public advice, IMO.

Second, internet marketing is all about failure. In fact, it should be its middle name: Internet "Failure" Marketing. I don't care who you are - or how clever you want people to believe you are - we all have failures.

The difference between internet marketers is a stark one: Market A will fail and quit and Marketer B will fail and battle on. Question is, is either marketer more right than the other? No. Not everyone is cut out for IM.

Marketer A could fail and quit and it could be the right decision or the wrong one. Maybe he truly isn't cut out for IM or maybe he is and the latest series of failures has forced him into making a bad decision.

And we can say the exact same thing for Marketer B.

Now let me hurl a further 2 cents at you.

This is what I can gather from your post:

    1. You can take action.
    2. You can setup a list.
    3. You can grow a list.
    4. You can write.
    5. You can recognise your failings.

Cody - those are not the characteristics (usually) of a marketer who should quit. Unless there are other variables (and there can be) then I really cannot see that all is lost.

I think you may have some people taking the "tough love" approach in this thread because it makes them appear realistic and solid and reliable.

When someone - as I am doing - suggests that you should continue, let's face it, it doesn't look as good. It can seem just the opposite - in a word, unrealistic.

And yet? From yours truly? Toss - not given.

Unless I'm missing something here (entirely possible) I've seen and know plenty of marketers who have succeeded with (seemingly) a lot less to offer.

Hell - some of the biggest success stories I know can barely string along a sentence.

Why not - here's another couple of cents.

If I had to guess (from what I have above), these are probably the fundamental problems:

    1. You've chosen the wrong niche.
    2. You don't communicate well enough with the audience.
    3. You're promoting the wrong offers.

    So what do you do?

    1. See if you can make the current business work.
    2. If not, give another model a try.

The last thing I would do in your shoes is abandon the current business. That will only make sense if you find out that you literally have no facility to make it profitable. You don't drop something unless you either can't make it work OR you know (know) that your best route is an alternative business.

Assuming you're unable to make it work (and it's 50-50 from what I have to go on) then consider my 1 to 3 insight above. It's entirely possible (50-50) that you've chosen the wrong niche or you can't efficiently talk to your audience or you have the wrong offers, or a combination.

Those elements? They cover a multitude of sins.

I'm sure - between all of us - we can help figure this out.

    Cheers,

    Tom

The first thing to check is to see if there are any technical issues that need to be fixed. For example, the domain in your sig isn't working.

Next is to identify the problem(s):

Are people not opening your email?
What's your open rate? Has it remained stable?
Are they opening but not clicking on links?
Are they opening and clicking but not buying?
    What's your general niche?
How long have you had this list?

You seem to be able to build lists pretty well but not engaging them in a meaningful way.

I feel that every day, my mistake was not doing my stuff with a partner.
I've spent years on my stuff but it's all technical (I'm a coder, no - WAS a coder) and now my money has run out I have no choice but to face IM, and to work organically. I'm ready to take up local cleaning jobs and yet I'm twenty years a programmer, run my own servers, make up my own data driven websites and God knows what else in between

I love the idea that the word failure should actually be a part of the job title. Truth is, it isn't failure, it's training. I mean, what if a football team were only allowed to field one player, and they were playing against 50? That's how IM feels to me. Those who make it here get my respect, it's a hard slog!

    I appreciate all the replies.

I am not considering giving up, although I can see now that my title makes it sound like I was planning on it.

No, I'm going to succeed eventually, but I had to be honest about my current efforts. Currently... I have failed. I have struggled for many years and I'm very tired of having a job on the side to support my family and internet marketing habits.

I am earning about $1,500 a month from online courses right now but need more to make the switch to full-time internet marketing.

Someone asked about my current list and stats.

First, the list has been built through PPC advertising, mostly solo ads. I have also done Bing and Google PPC ads.

    Niche is MMO/Work from home

I began building this list in late December.

Opt-in rate for my current squeeze page is averaging 30%

Current list is at 1,050 with 93 unsubscribes. (9% unsub rate)

Open rate is 5.78% on average. Highest open rate on this list was 10%, lowest was 3.8%.

    Click rate is 0.68%

Initial offer was $1 trial to MMO training program (Digital Altitude). But the company has since been halted due to an FTC lawsuit.

Only had 3 people take the trial, which I thought was weird because I would sign up for a $1 trial with no automatic recurring payments without hesitation, and for just about anything.

Considering replacing DA with Michael Cheney's 7-Figure Franchise, but a little gun-shy after what happened with DA. So, feel free to share your thoughts.

Other option is to make my own training course(s) and sell it/them for a reasonable price, say $27. But I'd much prefer to be an affiliate and not make any more courses. They are a lot of work and hit or miss when it comes to generating revenue (in my experience).

Hope this helps you get a clearer picture of my situation, and thanks again for the help.

P.S. For the gentleman who mentioned my broken signature link: I just haven't been on here in a long time. I tend to creep and not post, but I made this account some years ago. I have since removed the link which was going to an old domain I no longer own. Thanks!

I wouldn't class this as failure...perhaps invest more time in those courses since they are already earning you an income? Scale it up?

I should clarify that I don't own the list that is making me $1,500 a month because the courses are hosted with Udemy.com and so I cannot market to them directly, nor can I promote anything other than my Udemy courses.

So, unfortunately, I can't scale that up. Hence, why I'm building my own lists and trying to get things going on my own.

The positive thing is that you have taken responsibility for your results ― or the lack of. (Many People just blame something else and give up.)

Many, many People (if not most) weren't any good at "Internet Marketing"/Building an Online Business as well. However, like you, they decided not to give up.

If you want to be successful at building a profitable eMail list then my suggestion would be to spend some money learning more and more about it. (Maybe you will find something that you've been lacking and/or another strategy that will help you succeed.)

Honestly if you keep going ― no matter what ― it's very likely you will eventually succeed.
    : )

Quickly, it seems you have one problem: copywriting.

Assuming the list is ok, the solo ad vendors you bought are legit, etc.

Probably you can't write good mail FOR THIS TYPE OF AUDIENCE.

Remember: the good copy is all about speaking the language of the target for the target.

Check also solo ad vendor, Igor Kheitfs is focused also on digital attitude audience i heard, since i have not bought from him but i see that he's always speaking about this as an offer to his solo ad, try.

You have to try different vendors.

    And to MASTER COPYWRITING.

maybe email is just a crappy way to try and get people to take action in 2018 ..where you are not making much money from mmo or working from home.. it just may be a bad idea to try and sell products or put together products ..teaching people who to work from home or make money online .

now you have gotten further probably than 90 percent of those who dream of riches from internet marketing ..which is part of the problem you have with not getting people to take action.. for every 1000 people you email..by your numbers 7 people click through .

maybe it's time to set up a you tube account for making money with bitcoin.. or shift to emailing about making money with bitcoin .. that where the biggest hottest dreams of getting rich easy are now..

2016 and early 2017 it was shopify or amazon fba .. 2-3 years ago it was writing books for kindle ..

you are not a failure and if you are making 1,500 hundred a month ..you really have not failed..

the problem.. your real problem.. is you think it is a failure or you really have a problem .

    What is "DA"?

The biggest thing I can tell you is that there are a metric ton of people in this niche.

That doesn't mean you can't be there too -- but ask yourself, "what am I offering that people should pay attention to?" Why should they care about what you have to say or offer? How will your courses help them? Those are the things that make an email worth opening!

well i Read the problem of the OP and wonder why he is trying to succeed with a a basic online plan .. 15 years old .. not just in a flooded market but a market that has people who have been making money in it for 20 years ..

now 1,500 a month is not bad .but in the world of 2018 .. the money making lists are you tube subscribers , instagram followers , hell there are teen agers making more than that a month buying stuff from 5 and below good will and yard sale .. and selling it to face book groups ..

the vortex of internet marketer means you have to sell digital products teaching people about internet marketing and working from home ..building an email list ..

it is 2018 most as people walk around on their cellphone glued to the screen they are on youtube ,instagram, face book ,etsy .. and no longer checking their email every 10 minutes ..

Just thought I would add something else:

When Cody (OP) said "He" was the problem -- that doesn't mean him as a Person (etc.) ... It's not something "personal."

Rather the actions he took (or didn't take) were the problem. It's kind of subtle, however an important point.

    Focus.

Maintaining an immaculate form of focus will help you
unleash most of your potential. Athletes are focused.
Business people are. So are psychics.

You can be a walking billboard and have your desires
reach fruition by making your intentions clear in the
universe. The more you adhere to this amazing
intelligence, the more you'll reap down the track.

That's where Max lost his marbles.

    He wasn't focused.

A good deal of focus is directly tied to reaching deep
levels of trance while performing an activity.

And knowing beforehand that your project will fly.

Because you're walking an inch above the ground and
makes you automatically want to lay focus on...

the things that tickle your fancy.
