Is Internet Marketing for me?

I have been wanting to start an online business for about the last two years but can't seem to get a solid start. I have tried a few things and made about $100-$200. Everytime I start something I get frustrated, bored, or confused and give up. I keep buying ebooks and not doing anything with them.

The main reason I don't do much is because I don't really enjoy writing but I am apprehensive to spend alot of money buying articles. The idea of making money online sounds fascinating, but the actual work that is involved doesn't really excite me that much.

I took this test at keirsey.com and it says my personality type is Rational. Does my personality type not fit well with internet marketing or am I just lazy and unmotivated? Also if you are successfull at this internet marketing thing, what is your personality type?

Thanks.

Sounds like you did get a solid start since you have earned some money. That's
more than a lot of people have made.

I'd suggest you stop buying anything more until you decide to "do it" or walk
    away from it.

IM is many things including frustrating at times, and boring sometimes with the
many small (very important) marketing tasks.

The main reason I don't do much is because I don't really enjoy writing but I am apprehensive to spend alot of money buying articles. The idea of making money online sounds fascinating, but the actual work that is involved doesn't really excite me that much.
Right. Many things sound fascinating and cool until people realize there's actually
work involved to get to the fascinating and cool experiences, or feelings. But you
can alter your perspective, if you want, and realize that "doing these things" is
really fascinating and cool because of what it represents.

You can make money without doing a lot of writing. If you can afford to outsource
writing, then I would consider doing that "only" after you make a decision and
commitment to be an online marketer.

I took this test at keirsey.com and it says my personality type is Rational. Does my personality type not fit well with internet marketing or am I just lazy and unmotivated? Also if you are successfull at this internet marketing thing, what is your personality type?
Your personality type can fit in with anything YOU sincerely decide to do. Don't
take a test like that and think it's gospel about you, your abilities, or what you
can do IF you put your mind to it.

Your personality type will more naturally fit in with some things better than others.
Ok. So what? That's true for all of us.

Maybe ask your self why you want to do IM. What would being successfuly mean
to you, and why would you want it? For some, like me, I want to have more control
in my life and not suffer the whims of managers and businesses who do not care
about me. There are other reasons, but that's one reason why I do it.

If you're lazy, and I suspect you are not all that lazy because you managed to
make some money at it. Yes, sometimes it's difficult doing the small tasks that
comprise being in business of any kind. If you can outsource those tasks, then
you'll become a manager of sorts.

Success in any endeavor requires many things not the least of which is paying
due attention to the small things. It's the little things done every day that will
make or break you no matter what you do.

So just accept, or not, these things and concentrate on what you want to
    accomplish.

But if you decide to walk away from it, will you find your self unhappy working
for someone else for the rest of your life?

Hope that helps in some way.

    Regards...

Ok I'm going to be honest...there is going to be a lot of work involved. It's a business! Most of the time it's not exciting... writing frustrates me like hell. I hate it, it makes me stressed, but it's a part of it.

Anyway, try to see it this way....do you want to work for a boss for a minimum wage for the rest of your life doing crappy tasks or do you want to have more freedom and be your own boss...? Make up your mind.

    Good luck.

Don't believe the test of "personality type".

Every man has his faults, The most important thing is you know what your fault is and you try your best to change it by yourself or be forced by reality.

To be honest, nothing can excite you if you do it everyday.

Let me put it this way: you have two situations -

1.) You can work your ass off for a year, working for someone who doesn't care about you, make $40,000/year and be grateful you have $10 left in your bank account

    OR

2.) You can work your ass off for a year, set your own hours, treat yourself often and make as much money as you f***in feel like.

    Which would you take?

#1's easy. #1 doesn't require any thinking. You show up at 8:00, you do your gruntwork, then go home and watch the Daily Show in bed.

#2's hard as MOTHERF***ING HELL but has soooooo much more potential. It requires thinking for yourself. It requires depending on you and you alone to make sure the bills are paid. You may find yourself working at weird hours, but nobody will glare at you if you've got LolCats in another tab. You keep doing what works, you find new things that work, and then after awhile hey... this isn't so motherf***ing hard after all.

    It's your choice.

Think long and hard about it. Hopefully the answer will become obvious.

Only you can answer these questions, based on what you desire and whether you think you have the skills and determination needed.

Regarding your "Personality Test", just forget about it. Don't let some Psychiatric Psychobabble put some erroneous label on you.

There are so many great answers in this thread already, which I would have said myself too.

But I will add this. Everyone trying to build their own business gets the same feelings. They get bored or impatient at certain tasks, eagerly waiting for the excitement of what they might lead to.

How do I work around this? I try to form a picture in my mind of why I'm doing it. It's a reason behind my work. If you have this image in your mind of what you're working for, everything you do will be worthwhile even if it doesn't instantly make you thousands.

I agree with the others that your 'personality type' doesn't matter - yes it might mean you have a different style in IM, but not that you can't do it at all. Perhaps it's that you haven't found your own individual style yet. Stop buying products, start focusing on less and you'll probably find it.

I've been trying for over a year now and I have made less than $100 lol but I won't give up and neither should you. Try to set about marketing something you enjoy and that is profitable at the same time.

I think it seems like focus is needed to be successful. I for one have been too scatty jumping from one course to the next. Just need to stick with one and give it a real good try then move on from there.

Internet marketing is not easy work. Stay away from the programs that promise you this and that, you'll only get frustrated even more. I've been learning about marketing on the net for almost 2 years now. I have had to drive and push myself to learn everything I need to be self-sufficient. My carer died with the recession so I had to find something else. There is a place that offers live training and gives you a system to work with and the best part it doesn't cost anything. It's full of people that interact and help each other. It's always hard trying do things on your own, maybe you have been bouncing around and never actually stopped long enough to master one system.

I have to be honest with you. Working online is not going to be easy. It is hard enough to find someone to help you.

Your personality type doesn't have anything to do with if you can do it or not. Celebrate every milestone that you accomplish. You made some money, celebrate it and go on to the next goal.

Focus on one strategy and don't go to anything until you master that one.

It sounds like you need to make a plan and stick to it. I've tried all sorts of things before such as SEO PPC and article marketing. And it was because I've been hearing that this and that are the next big things. But none of those have worked too well for me.

I eventually got tired and just focused on my offline businesses which have been proven to work the best for me. Now I have had some recent successes in terms of online promotions, but I'm still going to focus on my offline businesses. In fact, I'm going to use what I've jsut learned to keep promoting my offline businesses.

You have gotten some honest feedback about IM being hard work. But perhaps issues could be clarified if you re-phrased your question:

"Is Being Self-Employed For Me?" or

"Am I Disciplined Enough to Work from Home and Be MY Own Boss?"

Only you know the answer to those questions. If you can say "Yes", then all the specifics of IM can be learned.

Good work habits are the requisites for any entrepreneurial venture. You need them to succeed in any business ~ whether you're selling e-books online or hotdogs from a cart on the street.

I would also like to reiterate what the others have said about the personality test... it's (mostly) worthless.

      Good luck to you!

    Stop that!

I did that. I did it for a long time. And then I said "I am not buying another damn thing until I make the money to buy it from something I've already bought."

    And I started making money.

Just pick something. I picked Jenn Dize's ghostwriting course. I used her free report to get a few clients. I used some of the money they paid me to buy her full-blown course. I used that course to get more clients and make more money.

Four months later, I don't have or need a day job anymore. I haven't completely replaced my former income, but I get by.

Just pick something, anything, and stick with it. Come hell or high water.

great response and agree, also suggest getting into a Mastermind Group of like-minded people. The group can be used to brainstorm and plan projects, and hold each other accountable to action. Good luck man, and whatever you do, don't give up.

That's the key right there. And believe me, that's good advice for most anything in life, success is about dedication and following through, if you don't do that you are setting your self up for failure. If getting rich was easy then someone would have written the ebook to end all ebooks by now and this forum wouldn't exist.

There are some good ideas out there, but there are no guarantees, only paths to follow to the very end.

Agree with that too. You must know first what you want to do, exactly. Then optimize it, and focus on it. Nothing get instant if you want to know. If you said you are easily get bored, than you haven't found what you really looking for.

Asked yourself first, what is you really want, what subject you really like and love to do, and get focus on it. Do it step-by-step. Pick something, mastering that, and stick with it.

Nothing about making money online is fast.
Nothing about making money online is easy.
Nothing about starting ANY business is easy and fast.

    You need persistance and patience.
You need to developed a 'never say die' attitude.

That being said. Find a product/ebook that you can relate to 100 percent. There are a lot of them but find the one that you can relate to and follow. I love step by step instructions and they have worked well for me.

However, if you are not committed, then go get a job to find out you need to get committed.

    Good luck!

      Hello,

I think you miss the motivation, when you have an aim then you will do any included tasks Without a sense of frustration. Also the internet has many many many other things to do in order to earn good money rather than IM,Why not to take break and try some freelancer projects , till you can re-concentrate on your way.But only keep in mind that IM is not easy , it`s like any business has it owen requirements.

      Best of luck.

I'm in agreement with Hasan Barbary, I think the real question is, "Is Being Self-Employed For Me?"

I've found that having a small business takes dedication, persistence, organization, business sense, customer service, research and development and more. I mean it literally takes everything that you have to make it go and keep it going. Not only does the small business owner have to wear all of the hats in order to run the business, he/she has to work with your CPA and make sure that all of the accounting is accurate & complete.

I think the key is to have a business plan that you are willing to commit to and have an understanding of your purpose, mission and vision written so that you will know why you are doing what you're doing. Those 3 components will help you stay focused on the daily activities because the tasks will overwhelm you sometimes. When you have Purpose, Missions & Vision defined you know why your organization exists and you can employ others to embrace it to help you accomplish the organizational/entities goal.

The Vision is "Why your business exists"
The Purpose is "What the business fulfillment is in the marketplace"
The Mission is the "How you are going to achieve the business purpose"

Since you already made some money form online business you are surely capable of raising it on next level.
But its all up to you.
You have to be pro-active to make any significant progress in online business.
This kind of business surely has its benefits but also has its cons, too.
And most important, if you do not feeling happy while doing such creative work, no matter of financial benefit, it could be serious issue later.
So, try to "interview" yourself to find your deepest wishes and put on table all pros and cons of three jobs: your current job, online business job you started so far and ideal job you would like to do.
    Be sincere.
    And you`ll get your answer.

"Internet Marketing" is not a business. Internet marketing is marketing stuff on the internet. Your actual business is providing a product or service that fills a want or need that people have. Internet marketing is just getting the word out about the product or service.

There are lots of successful business people who don't have any interest or skill in marketing. It could be that you're just one of those people. But if that's the case, then you have to either accept that you don't like it and commit to doing it anyway, or hire someone else to handle your marketing for you, while you focus on the aspects of your business that you find more engaging.
