What inspires you to create content?

Imagine you are speaking to a person who has depression, and they have very little motivation. They ask you, "What inspires you to create content?" -- or perhaps, "Why bother creating content?"

How would you respond?

Edit: Okay, forget the depression thing as it seems to be skewing the answers here. What inspires you to create content? Why bother?

I would avoid that conversation. What motivates ME is not going to resonate with someone who has depression or other health/emotional problems.

I can't give motivation to anyone else - have to work on finding it for myself as do others.

well are you talking about the depression artist or creators tend to go in and out of .. or are you talking the mourning type depression from a break up ,, a job loss ,,a person close to them dying ..

the biological depression .. is far different than the event driven depression .. instead of geeting either to be creative though .. off to help them clean their room or apartment and get them to shower shave ..put on clean cloths .. and get out into sunlight .and moving around ..

  • I would wanna ask this question of a SAUSAGE STUFFER,

Yanno, the guys go on TV an chomp 60+ sausages down their throats in mebbe 20 minutes.

To Moi, that is the epitome of CONTENT.

Reverse regurgitation stuffed down the shlammo hole till weirdsy cellulite snakes bust foith from your skin pores.

Usin' this as a metaphor (which, if'n you sensibyool, you WON'T) creatin' content merely means spewkin' more sausages into the stomach of the haplessly deloosional fat guys drilled down on winnin' the presdigious PORKY CHOMPER award.

Content only evah works when relative vacuums exist.

It fills empty space with the rocket fuel of propulsion.

Offahs viable succor in a Cosmos fulla junk food.

Delivahs substance you can grab an' make do stuff.

Meantime, here is my favo sausage fiend FACT.

Back in 1986, champ eater guy Leonard Clancy downed 275 chipolatas in 85 mins 23 secs.

Woulda beat the record set by Jim "The Way Bob" McRufferty in July 1956, but the judges took against Clancy for usin' what they described as "an unnaturally advantageous mechanical shovel allied to an oral funnel arrangement".

Gotta hope there is a movie in this bcs I'm personally done with supaheroes.

Tellya, if'n we talkin' CONTENT, you got a 20 minute scene here where Clancy's gal is screamin' at him to "go natural .. and win the day."

Leonard, hon ... you don't need that freaky equipment to win on through. I seen you bitin' on your sausages every mornin'. I know in your heart you want to win this thing. So why not trust your natural greed, your natural anger? You don't need that crazy stuff to win.

(Clancy stomps from the contestants' tent at this stage, pulling the chains on his funnel tight so it frames his maw like a black hole ready to gobble all sausagekind.)

Leonard! Please just trust your natural talent for chomping on endlessly proffered meat! If only for me ... and for *sigh* OUR BABY!

I don't have any inspiration. I write, mostly because that's the way I market.

I also write because I feel an obligation to pass on what I know.

What inspires me to create content is the exact same thing that inspires me to do just about everything else. It's my job, obligation, duty, work.

It's never really a jolt of inspiration that gets me started.

I have plenty of ideas. I have a deep knowledge of the subject I write about. It's one of the major reasons I don't need inspiration. I obviously have an interest in the subject, or I wouldn't write about it.

If you have a deep understanding of a subject, and a compelling reason to write about it....inspiration is unnecessary.

I like this Naval Ravikant quote a lot on this:

"Creativity is the last frontier...automation over a long enough period of time will replace every non-creative job...that's great news. That means that all of our basic needs are taken of, and what remains for us is to be creative, which is really what every human wants"

tp build on claude's answer .. if you are creative ..but depends on inspiration.. it a real good idea to have a stable income from a job ..or create things that can be easily replicated if they sell well ..

as for the why bother ..we can tie it to the depressions thing.. a naturally creative person needs to find outlets for their creativity or they will be prone to boudt of depressions ..and that depression usually provide lots of inspiration ..

if you are trying to manufacture or produce content ..to build a business put aside your inspiration.. and avoid creating content for other creators ..create content for your audience ..that your audience tells you they want ..*with what they buy .

aded ..mathew .. i like Navals information ..but almost all of that creativity will be expressed in virtual environments rather than the physical world ....

To me, writing content is a job. And there is no need for inspiration. If I need to get started on writing something, I generally just look at one of the hundreds of newsletters I have, or crack one of the hundreds of book on the subject, and start writing.

If you are writing about a subject you know, you can always write about a smaller piece of the pie. If you have an article about making your bed. That instantly springs out subjects like why we make our bed, the history of bed making. the reason we sleep in beds, why we use pillows, what is the function of pillows, different types of pillows, different material of pillows. How pillows are used in different cultures....

It goes on forever. You should be able to talk about your subject for days, and never repeat yourself. Then, inspiration isn't needed..

Do you need inspiration to eat? get dressed? If you write...are a writer...inspiration isn't needed. It's your job, or part of your job.

If it's a matter of procrastination...it means you don't want to write content. How can you develop desire to write? You can't but you can be obligated to write. Are people inspired to go to their jobs every day? To me, that's what it is...part of the job.

we both study jordan peterson .. and i believe the twelve rules for life .. start with explain why making your bed everyday and keeping your room clean are the first step you can take to organize your life if your life is out of control ..

but there is a difference between marketing to people to emulate the already wealthy and rich to those who are building wealth ..

now as far as explaining history goes the way i have seen it explained in marketing .. is to explain why a person would have a poor quality mattress or poor quality sheets or poor quality pillow ..but because why out patented process .. you can afford the same quality mattresses or high thread count sheet or pillow the rich an privileged only could us up to now .

it all depends on the audience ..not how inspired the creator is .. or how motivate or how the creator feels.. if the creator does ntot produce content the audience wants bad thing happens

Content can be described in so many ways.

Is it what we put inside an empty box, or a blank canvas, brain?

It has to be information at it's core. Even an image.

    It conveys.

As internet marketers we want to convey for several reasons.

To bring attention. To persuade. To Convert.

That can lead to positive reward.

Our business, reputation, credibility grows and expands as we create more and more content.

Misinformation probably would have reverse effect.

Not wanting to go all Bill Clinton, (what does is mean? {cause that depresses me})...

But I'm not sure what YOU mean by content? Let me assume, then correct me if wrong, fair enough?

Content in the IM world is information that is consumed, often paid for, by a person or group of people who have an interest in the subject. Does this get close?

Like Claude, inspiration doesn't provide motivation, however, as a known shIt poet, I have written some pretty crappy poems when inspired...

But for CONTENT, which is either designed to be purchased or presell, upsell or establish cred...it mostly comes from EXPERIENCE. If I don't have first hand experience then I might borrow it from someone who does. I've never sold vacuum cleaners, but I know someone who has so I could extract his experience and create content via an interview, as an example.

So, if your question is about CONTENT FOR CONSUMPTION (and for the purpose of generating sales) then it becomes creating or acquiring it for a specific audience, avatar or market. And THEY dictate how. And in what form they want the content delivered

I like to create content after I have a clear idea of my INTENT, and if it is for financial purposes, I start at the end, the TRANSACTION, then work my way back from that and create the content to fulfill that purpose.

I've sold thousands of specialty reports and only one poem (Greeting Card)...so my heart felt (inspired) content and a dollar bill might get me a cup of coffee at Mickey D's at senior rates.

Inspiration is an unreliable mistress when it comes to IM.

"Here's a list of therapists who deal with depression and have gotten good reviews."

I would hand them the list.

There's an endless array of reasons people end up depressed. Addressing their particular reason takes care of motivation.

When people who are not depressed ask what motivates you to create content, they usually mean, What's in it for me?

And that means they cannot connect their current state of being / mind / skill to a positive outcome they see / heard of / want.

Years ago, out of college and looking for a job, I ran into the following common issue:
We would hire you, but you do not have the minimum 6 months of work experience.

I was looking for entry-level positions.

Someone, who sincerely wanted to help me, offered me this solution:
    I paraphrase:
I don't understand why you cannot get a job. Look here: they took out the wanted section of the paper (for you Gen X: paper means newspaper and, on Sundays, eons ago, they use to run a big section of ads, part of which was hundreds and hundreds of for hire ads).

They pointed to me jobs that had a starting salary of over 100k, when I could not get a job at a few pennies above minimum wage.

They did not understand why I did not even apply.

(By the way, in retrospect, I should have applied for some of those positions: I probably would not have gotten them, (though it is not guaranteed) but it would have opened my eyes and mind to possibilities I did not see. That is not why they told me to apply for those jobs... They did it because they were clueless.

I hired some people in my life. The best appraiser I hired was not the one with the best technical skills... but the one with the best attitude and willingness to not feel ashamed when he could not do something... and hide it (so I knew from the start, or as soon as possible, I had to do something different)... Or, more precisely, mind flexibility: he was willing to make changes to his plans and paths... )

What kept me from applying for those jobs: I was sure I did not have the skills... How was I so sure? They paid over $100k and I was looking for jobs that paid $24 to 28k a year.

Fast forward a few years, I had an appraisal company and was charging (and getting) between 30 to 50% more than my competitors. The main reason: I saw myself as the owner of a company that charged that much... (Neither I nor any of my appraisers were 30-50% better than all the others... though I and a couple of my appraisers were not bad at appraising.)

Kind of the same with content:
If you cannot connect your content-creating activities to a positive outcome you can see yourself swimming in, you cannot do it.

It is easier to see yourself if you have done similar things, if you have a bunch of related knowledge, or if you are entirely clueless.

Bringing in the big guns (Look at So and So, he's done it for only 3 months and now there's a half naked blonde sprawled over the hood of his red Lamborghini that's parked in front of a $2.7 million house, works only on the clueless.

For the ones that are not entirely clueless, that 'social proof' backfires. What is needed is small guns.

Look at So and So, they've spent 3 hours a day for the last week and now they have a 3-minute video and a 500 article that's well-written and covers the basic problem x and a solution.

    You can do that too.

Once you do that, look at So and So again. They took that video, posted in on youtube and 3 other places and that took them only 1 hour... And they had 17 visitors last week and one of those visitors bought the dohickey they are promoted and they made $14.37.

When you are depressed, the distance between where you see yourself and where regular content creation happens is larger.

Anger, greed, lust can shorten that distance (they do it more if you're not depressed), especially anger. If you can get a depressed person angry the right way, and they're not too depressed, it might get them to take the first step... You're still better off, going one small step at a time.

Disclaimer: I am not a therapist, nor have I ever played one on TV.

I write to help people. I think that the best way I can give back to the world is to share the things I have with the world in my mind.

Also I love to type it's theraputic. So the more I type the more relaxed I feel and it might be also because I type at about 100+wpm so it's really fun to write.

last year scott adams ..the dilbert cartoon creator and author of many bestselling books ..explain his creative process ..and he is already very rich and successful and just married a model half his age and she had a net worth of millions so she was actually into him and not after his money ..

anyway hit extremely complicated process that he build a fortune off of ..is he wakes up early every morning gets in his working clothes and either sits down and start writing for a few hours until the rest of the world wakes up.. or he starts drawing his cartoons for a few hours .. every morning .. the same time ..

honestly i have read a similar thing from professional writers who maintain a writing scedual either late at night or early in the morning that limits interruptions .. and if they need to do heavy amounts of writing .. the go to a cabin in the would or a city with low population where no one will bother them ..so they can write all day ..

but those are professional.. amateurs depends one motivation and inspiration ..

I actually think anyone can learn from Adams' advice here - as its rooted in the psychology of habit building. I've heard Stephen King, Jerry Seinfeld, Stephen Pressfield (The War of Art), James Altucher all say similar things about their process. A lot of it comes down to plunking yourself down, distraction-free, and forcing yourself to add something to a blank page each day (no matter how bad or good).

One thing that I have learned to do is write down when someone asks an intelligent question, or says something I haven't heard before.

I used to write a 24 page newsletter every month. All original content, all written by me. And people paid for it.

By the time I started writing the next month's newsletter, I would usually have a dozen or so notes on subjects to tackle or questions to answer.

Inspiration doesn't need to be a one time event. Ideas flow past us constantly. I also used to read books and newsletters, and after a page or two ask "Well, what about..?"

No question is ever completely explored. There is always a new facet to uncover and talk about.

I never understood it when someone said they had writer's block. When I sit down to write, there are about ten things I can't wait to talk about.....ten ideas that just need to get out.

Inspiration is needed by people who don't want to write.

          Hi Claude.

Reading OP's post again -- although he used the word "inspiration" -- I think he's essentially asking: "What's a Person's motivation for writing content?" In fact he said: "Why bother creating content?"

And People can have slightly "different" motivations for writing. (Like helping People as oppyequnome said ...)

There's no "right" or "wrong" motivation (IMO). While you enjoy the process (like I do) -- and because it's your obligation and duty -- some People like smashcreate may write because they have empathy for their readers ...Then other People may write purely because they want to generate sales or leads for their Business.

Anyway, thanks for the post though. It's nice to hear from an Accomplished Writer. : )

That's a really important insight there. I keep forgetting that to most people, writing for public consumption is somehow intimidating.

Like speaking in public. They feel like they will be judged by others....and maybe they will look foolish.

It's a fear that isn't based in reality...but I know it's felt by the majority of people.

Most people will write an anonymous review...or comment on a video, because there are hundreds of other comments.

But to "take the spotlight"? and write an article about something that interests you..and put your real name on it? It can be intimidating.

I'm glad you brought it up, because it's an important point I hadn't thought about for a long time.

really why people have so much fear is 90 percent of the marketing in the world is fear based at some level ...

so if it is truly fear based .. and not justa complete disinterest ..you have to figure out the fear chaine the person is telling themselve..and replace it with a far worse set of events if they do not do the thing

and with cancel culture and whats going on with you tube/facebook and twitter ..there are a lot of real fears to be had at this time if ..you have an income from the real world and risk losing your job because of the outrage mob

It's just a matter of producing a little content and posting it. Once you do it once, it's obvious that it isn't hard and that nothing scary happens.

After a few attempts, it's nothing at all.

But writing content is about the least stressful thing you can do to put your name on.

To me, it's like being afraid of answering the phone, or brushing your teeth.

If someone told me that they were afraid to write a few paragraphs about a subject they were interested in, I would suggest that they not do it. It isn't something that's required in life.

If writing makes you uncomfortable, just don't do it.

Thanks Claude. : ) Much appreciated.

I was also thinking of/referring to Public Speaking. I'm guessing that again ― with practice ― that becomes easier as well? One thing I would add is that as a Person becomes a better/more proficient Content Writer (or Public Speaker) ... That (could?) make them more confident and reduce some of the fear.

it is really not a matter of fear and confidence . or any in the moment feeling .. it more self image ..and an assessment of ones skill and abilities based on the time they where in school/education.

many people even in their 40's and 50 will still guide their self beliefs based off when they where in school .. they might still be unwilling to eat some vegetables because they remember hating them as a kid

Good point. : ) And the great aspect of writing content (and other Entrepreneurial/Online Business skills etc.) is that they can be developed and improved over time. With practice a good Writer can become a great Writer.

That said, I agree that early experiences can have an influence on a Person's success. It needn't hold them back, however. Something that hasn't been mentioned is that there is "innate" and "natural" talent -- some People are just more naturally good at writing

                      P.S.
I won't comment on Public Speaking because I don't have any experience with it.

if i am conversing with someone in a chatroom or private text .. my writing is much better and flows easier .. but it is far more difficult to post in a chat context like this .. and writing more than a post .. not happening ..

Isn't it possible to simply enjoy writing?

Some people just enjoy the process. You don't need a burning desire for success.....a shot of inspiration....

Can't you just enjoy it? If you enjoy writing, you will.

I get my inspiration from other people's posts. So many are looking for answers so I try to provide it with my content.

With everything going on in the world today, sometimes people just want to feel special

"What inspires you to create content?"
    1. I enjoy the content. (Like a writer or artist)
    2. I believe the content may bring me something I would enjoy. (Like a job or something I may be rewarded for)
    3. To some people, the content would protect them, for example, they are forced to create, if fail, they would be punished.

If you don't enjoy the content, nor need it to protect you, nor would it bring you something you may enjoy, then why bother?

    @James,
Content Writing is a great field. We writers create content for others' motivation. Our motivation is, when our content is approved with excellent feedback, we are inspired to write more and even better.
However, there are different things that inspire one to write.
Some people write to do catharsis.
Good payment also inspires one to write.
Freelancers' motivation for content writing is their order. As soon as they get an order, they hold the pen and begin to create the required content.
    Hope it helps.
    Best,
    Naheed

Alone time, Aliens, all the associations that come to my mind. I have more of a 'shitposter' kind of channel tho, mostly for entertainment, communicating with others (For example I recorded a discussion on Naruto and Breaking Bad ).

And as for why bother. I started my channel during a Lockdown. It was a pretty big step for my considering I was not used to sharing too much or expressing anything on social platforms let alone posting My nonfilter videos It felt like a challenge and I had plenty of time on my hands. And motivation. Maybe some far fetched dream to grow on youtube and have enough money while providing content to others. So it was more like a self-observing moment and is even now. But I have a more clear picture about my channel and how it should be in the future, but I also lack energy motivation and vitamin D, sooo....

Inspiration comes in various forms every day, a good day or a good mood can inspire me to write, travelling brings out the writer in me, scenic views, food and happiness inspire me but sometimes anger, frustration and sadness also make me write to get it all out. I guess writing is an outlet for me.

The need for descriptive material for products and their updating inspires me. Or is it compels?

I'm inspired to do different stuff at different times. I wrote a screenplay/short story in my head for no apparent reason. I am not inspired at the moment to make marketable content from it - but I could with new skills.

Last year I felt the urge to dye a leather armchair red. Then I wanted to refurbish some old flat comfy shoes. It was productive and fun.

I'm inspired to write right now because it's what I want to do right now. Some fun maybe and it might be productive - you never know.

I feel somewhat inspired to consider creating some content due indirectly to the need, as per one poster above, for vitamin D. I need more exercise and sun. But I don't like 'just walking'. I prefer a mission. Sea fishing is good but the coast is not near. Metal detecting is OK but few good spots round here.

There are wallabies quite close though. Unusually so, as this is Birmingham, England's 2nd city. They live wild in the hills. Few people have seen them or know much. Seems the way is wide open for wallaby related content to be gathered/created. I need the walk, have binoculars and camera and flask of tea, a notepad, map and compass, so I may as well take them along and see what happens.

Also wanting to tell a story is an age-old pastime and everyone loves a good tale. I love stories so much, apparently, that once I started to tell one to myself I was trapped - I had to finish it - I needed to know the ending (which hadn't yet been written). Why would I do that? I may need to get tested.

The best inspiration for creating content is empathy for your customer or user. Think about their goals, needs, and questions along the way.Imagine walking a miles in their shoes. It is also a good way of engaging with the people.

Content writing is a very interesting job for all content writers. The very important part of their job is research because in modern SEO practice it means a lot. There are many guidelines to write Google-friendly optimized content. It will help to improve the readability score.

I create and share free content on my youtube channel. and what inspires me is that my content can help someone. and that through creating free or paid content my online business is grown.
Having said that a depressed person needs to get motivated in their personal life first then can become motivated to create content. Generally We need a strong why for it

Guess that the process inspires me the most in this case. When something goes wrong I lose control and can't handle with my emotions. It disappoints me a lot and I try to do everything in order to be successful at something that I do.
Of course, all people are tend to behave themselves like that, however losses affect me most. I'm inspired by great results and if something goes wrong I try not to let my emotions take over contro lmy mind. But, as you know, it's very difficult for me to handle emotions.

Changing lives. Have something that inspires. Could be a great or not so great experience that others could leverage and learn from.

Could be personal or could be an experience someone else had that others can benefit from.

Now if the content topic is as exciting as watching paint dry then it's time to outsource.
