What does it mean to "brand yourself"?

This might be a silly question, just out of curiousity, what does it mean to "brand" yourself? I've heard of that saying particularly in the mlm business, but sure what it means to brand yourself? Also, how do you go about branding yourself? Just curious

    Branding yourself is basically getting your name out there in the IM world by building connections. The most popular way to build connections is through Facebook, MySpace and Twitter. Build your friend list and gain followers...that way you have a targeted group to market to.

    Another social site you could try is Perfect Networker (www.perfectnetworker.com). I would use this site primarily for internet and business based niches. It's a great community and i've made some pretty good connections on there.

    A brand is a symbol that represents consistency in what is offered to the marketplace.

    "Brand yourself" means that you should decide what you stand for, and what you don't; communicate this often with total clarity and consistency; and have some simple, easy to remember way to represent your uniqueness so people can remember you and what you do.

    The most detailed book on the topic for freelancers might be "How to establish a unique brand in the consulting profession" by Alan Weiss.
