When I began my main site (White Dove Books) I decided it would be all about Personal Development, Self Growth & Motivation. Indeed these were the original terms I used for my main keywords.

However, I have recently been thinking much more about what these terms actually mean. I wrote about Personal Development here ...

http://www.warriorforum.com/mind-war...velopment.html

... and my thoughts on Motivation are here ...

http://www.warriorforum.com/mind-war...otivation.html

... so now I thought it was time I put down some thoughts on the subject of Self Growth.

It is a term that’s closely connected with Personal Development of course – perhaps even synonymous - but I suppose Personal Development has come to represent the wider subject and Self Growth specifically relates to the process of becoming all you can be – what Abraham Maslow referred to as ‘self actualisation’.

In Maslow’s hierarchy, there are five levels corresponding to the needs we all share as human beings. They are:

Self Actualisation
Esteem
Social
Safety
Physiological

I suppose that I see Self Growth as ascending the hierarchy – moving from a focus on attending to physiological needs to a life that is eventually centred around achieving your Life-Purpose

In short, I see Personal Development as the subject; and Self Growth as a Process.

I would be very interested to hear other views on this.

    Hi Will,

I totally agree with you on the pretext that Personal Development is a subject. It is simply too broad to be treated as a single event.

If you want to dig deeper into Maslow's teachings you could take:
    • Self Actualisation
    • Esteem
    • Social
    • Safety
    • Physiological

... and organize them into the following declaration.

In order to realize self actualization we first have to be honest with ourselves about the things that hold us back. Once we understand our shortcomings we can work on eliminating them step by step. This will help us to gain more self esteem. By increasing our self esteem we automatically gain more social acceptance/proof because of how we hold ourselves/behave in public.

All this serves to increase our mental safety/peace. By being at peace of who we are (including our good and the bad character traits) we gain a better understanding about ourselves, allowing us to enjoy a physiological boost.

Of course all of the above serves in helping us to grow continuously as we age.

    Regards
    Monika

    Hi Monika

That's quite an interesting take on Maslow.
