Need someone to explain me an NLP exercise?

Hi guys,

I recently heard about a NLP/mental exercise where you can associate the positve feeling of a task that you love to one that you actually hate.

The purpose of the exercise is to release the negative feeling associated to a particular task and replace it by a positive one.

Does our fellow NLP warriors know what I'm talking about?

    Hi Ryan,

    I think you're talking about anchoring.

    Unfortunately, I don't know enough about it to explain it to you, but you could read about anchoring on wikipedia or google it.

    Get ahold of some of Tony Robbins' older books or his old Personal Power CD's. You can usually find them on ebay. He talks alot about NLP. There are a ton of NLP websites, too, if you Google it.

      Hi Ryan,

      Regarding anchoring:
      if you have a strong negative feeling attached just anchoring will not help.

      You'd have to do it in 2 steps:
      1) de-tach the negative feeling from the task. Leave it alone for a while and test if you can be neutral about the task. You'd do this with (google those):
      - collapsing anchors
      - submodality work
      2) Then you can start attaching good feelings to it, one way would be through anchoring.

      There is however the question why you would want to do a task that you hate in the first place.

      I found that trying psychological fixes to enhance motivation does not work very well.

      What DOES work very well is to find out what motivates you naturally and then organize your life accordingly.

      Many people try to change themselves to fit into something that really is not a fit at all.
      • For example many people who are not sales people try to become one to fit into MLM schemes. But it's just not who they are and they frequently fail.
      • Many people are totally non-techie, but they try to become techie because someone told them they can make nice money on the internet. Then they spend years doing stuff they hate, and guess what ... it doesn't even work well for them.
      If it's a tiny issue, NLP works well and is recommended. But if you want to use it to become someone you are not, then better save yourself the years and make a new decision right now.

        Now that's something worth repeating!

        The only thing I would add is don't blow an idea out without trying it out just for a bit, sometimes you can find you like something you never imagined you would. Just know when to stop wasting time with it.
