Superstition in the Workplace - Oil Rigs

Hi Guys,

I was watching a reality tv programme earlier today called 'Oil Riggers'. It's based on three competing teams digging for oil in Texas.

Each team have their goals to reach and were all dogged with major problems along the way, mainly being mechanical and personnel problems. It was stated that each day's problems or delays cost about $45K per day and one of the oil rigs is new, costing $8million.

While continuing watching, I was very surprised when one of the riggers (from the team that had the most problems), realised that the flag of Texas was hanging upside down on the pole.

He got his team mate to pull up alongside the flag pole.

He stood on the fork on the fork lift truck, his mate raised the fork, and he changed the flag around so that it flew the right way up.

Apparently, oil riggers and working on the oil rigs is a very superstitious place, and after sorting that out, the rig began to run much more smoothly.

I was astonished!

It got me thinking of what you fellow IM'ers do, as a habit, to bring good luck or karma into your life that benefits you and/or your business?

Regards,

    Ha. Thats a great story.

I try and be good to everyone I meet. Even when people blame me for something, I simply talk back with a nice tone.

I'm very superstitious when it comes to the fact of being nice because karma does come back to bite you.

Basically what superstition does is get you in flow, which believe it or not is a key principle to success.

Every try to push for something when you know you shouldn't?? This is the same concept

Unfortunately, superstition can be a powerful force of the mind that can influence a person both positively and negatively.

You do not need superstition to guide you or for any form of success or achievement. If you can wipe any form of superstitious belief from your mind and move forward with confidence in your own abilities to learn, achieve and succeed, you will be so much happier and healthier.

Regarding "good luck and karma" in your life, this is what I believe:

"Luck is what happens when preparedness meets opportunity. The more ability you have in any field, the more 'lucky' opportunities that field will yield." --Brian Tracy

I completely agree and I'm sorry for the confusion I might have caused. What you mentioned is still getting your flow going. Superstition is just how some people do it' that's how they get their confidence. I'm not superstitious in any way... I was just trying to explain why it magically worked lol.

I love Mr. Tracy. He knows where it's at. The key is not looking for the opportunities but looking out for them. Just being aware. I spent a lot of trying trying to push my way into certain opportunities and things never worked out. Now I make my moves when I feel they are right and look to see what comes from it. It works great Brian's one of my few mentors in this field

lol - Hey, AP, no need to appologize ... in fact, I probably came on a little too strongly on the concept of superstition in the first place myself.

I hear what you're saying about superstition working for some people. Even though I don't personally agree with using it that way, (lol, that's just me), I do understand how it can help some people get focused and moving in the right direction. Different things motivate different people in different ways at different times -- the key to success is finding what motivates us in a positive way in the moment, then drawing on it for strength.

Eh I'm not superstitious at all really. I mean hey I was born on a Friday the 13th (supposedly bad luck) but I'm making money online so lol that's already out the window. I'm not nice because of the karma thing, but I'm just generally nice because it's me. I don't like changing who I am for anyone and I refuse to. I just keep a positive mind and if it doesn't work...then hey there's other opportunities. One door closes when another one opens as they say.

    Hi there Guys,
    Thank you for your replies.

    It's interesting to note about:

@ ICanSeeProfits: being nice to others, and karma
@ AwesomePossum: superstition getting you in the flow
@ GT: confidence in your own abilities to learn
@ TVChatten: your birthdate and keeping a positive mind

    And with follow-on replies

I was just amazed that in this time i.e. 21st Century, these ole-time habits and thoughts have transcended time and are still prevalent, on both a personal and professional levels.

    Thanks again, everyone.

    Speaking of Mr Tracy,

I was very privileged to meet him once when he came to Gatwick London in October 2009 to speak at a personal development conference.

It was a small meeting of about 60 people and at least one-third of the crowd wanted their pictures taken with him.

Unfortunately, I didn't have my camera with me, but I did get to shake his hand.

He has such a fantastic presence, and is a gentleman too.

    Enjoy your day!

When faced with negative energy, sit, and be present with stillness. Sounds hokey, but it works. Never reflect that negativity that others may broadcast your way. See it for what it is, let it pass, and move on.

When you feel that energy within yourself, try to recognize it for what it is, acknowledge it without reacting, and let it pass. It takes discipline, but it works...and life gets much easier when you stop trying to resist negativity with more negativity.
