The hidden mental success-killers

When it comes to success one has to look no further than his or her thoughts and feelings.

Here are the most common beliefs that in my opinion hold people from achieving at extraordinary levels (just one of them is enough to stop you):

1.) I'm not good enough to pull this off

Here's a secret... Nobody was born good enough to do anything. And most successful people started out with a very limited amount of knowledge and experience. They just simply pursued what they believed in and eventually succeeded!

So... YES, you absolutely ARE good enough to have massive success! It all depends on how much time and energy you're willing to put into it.

Keep this in mind... If you've been persistently and devotedly working on a skill for one to two months, you probably know it better than 60% of all the people in the world! If you've been doing it for a year, you're better than 97% of people and if you've been doing it for four years, you're better than 99.9% of people!

You can start something from scratch and if you're devoted and persistent enough, you can be better than almost all the people in the world in less than a year! Really think about this.

2.) Everything has to be perfect before I start

WRONG! It will never be perfect BEFORE you start. I think this is one of the biggest success killers out there. I'm not saying to be sloppy and just throw anything you get your hands on out there... I'm just saying that you should make it good enough and start immediately. You'll get to perfection eventually. But if you never start, you'll never succeed.

None of the most successful firms or web sites looked exactly the same since the beginning. They ALL evolved to their present state through testing and refining (= experience).

3.) Money is bad, it corrupts people

Money is just paper with ink and some fancy additions on it. How you perceive it is a whole different story...

We've been conditioned almost since birth that rich people are bad, corrupt, pretentious, unfriendly... Who in the world would like to be like that? Almost nobody.

But... if you unconsciously hold that belief, your subconscious will do everything to keep you away from money (or make you spend all of it if you do manage to get your hands on large quantities)... After all, you don't want to become one of THOSE people...

So, begin reprogramming yourself immediately. For start, think of some very rich people you know that are actually good people with high moral standards and good values. Work on this issue, almost all of us have it.

4.) I have it all figured out in my head...

Make a plan. Write it down on paper. You probably heard this one already: "If you fail to plan, you plan to fail".

Make it as detailed as possible and with actual dates you intend to achieve each step. As with everything, your plan doesn't have to be perfect the first time. It will always change and evolve. But it will keep you in the right direction, which is FORWARD!

5.) Nobody believes in me...

You don't need anyone but your self. It's very nice if you have someone that believes in you and gives you moral support but in the end YOU are the one living YOUR life. Nobody else can do that for you.

When you believe in yourself, others will follow.

Be persistent and you'll succeed beyond your wildest dreams!

6.) I'll do it when I'll have more time and money...

This is one of the most common misconceptions. Research has shown that a vast majority of people thinks that in the future they will have more time and more money.

In reality this almost NEVER comes true (at least not in the first decade)! Although you might make more money, you'll also have more expenses! And to have more money, you'll have to devote more time to getting it! Not to mention having kids...

The problem is that this is the excuse that can be used anytime, no matter what your current situation is. The most important thing is to know what you need and what you want. If you always go for what you want, you'll most probably always spend all your money. If you learn to only get what you need and postpone what you want (which almost always turns out that you don't!), then you'll see your money growing.

I used to be a hopeless information junkie. I would buy almost everything that came out. Be it ebooks on Internet marketing, expensive courses, even seminars. I would confuse what I needed with what I wanted. And I always gave priority to such courses instead of, for example, investing in ads or a professional copywriter.

"I'll hire a copywriter when I'll have more money", "I'll set up my site when I'll have more time", I always said. Well, it took me 5 years to actually do it. And if I did it before, I'd have my website up and running years ago...

YOU CAN DO IT, so go to work!

If you can think of any more such success killers, post them so that we can become aware of them all.

The trouble with these is not what they are, its how do you eliminate them?

Most of the time you get told to have a positive mental attitude, think happy thoughts,
Writing a plan/goals etc etc etc
This wont cut it in 99% of the population.

You need to start introducing cures.

PS I have had everyone of those thoughts!

@Endpoint: You are not alone! I've had each and every one of those thoughts. I spent hundreds of hours dealing with them... So the first step is to believe in yourself -- Easier said than done. But, if you look at my signature, you'll see that the first link leads to a subliminal videos web site I recently launched. It contains the cures. And they work. I love the self esteem booster video and I use it regularly.

And now that you are aware of the processes that are going on in your mind, you can do something about it. Most people never take the time to even learn that so you're much above almost everyone.

There's so much more to human mind than we are aware of.

If you have any specific questions, just ask. I'll answer them to the best of my abilities.

    To your success!

    • Man, success killer # 3 is my weakness.

Every time I would obtain a large sum of money, I would spend it fast even

though I just made up my mind to budget it.

@Alfonso: now that you know this, you can do something about it. I just thought of another success killer that may be also connected to your problem. I'll add it to the list above as #6.

I think these beliefs are right on target with most people and what stops them from being successful. Once someone realizes that this is their thought pattern you do need to figure out how to change it. That is the hard part. I think some of the suggestions above are pretty good.

Here in Holland a common answer to problems is "I Hope So". To me this is a success killer right from the start. Hoping something will work or change. You can't hope things to work.

I have a friend working with me on a website and he finds all kinds of reasons or problems to slow him down. Whenever he starts in on a problem I give him one answer "Just Do It!" It always stops him in his negative tract. That has always worked well for me when I find a roadblock. I can see Blaz Banic has the same philosophy!

@Ailcol: Excellent observation! Hoping is another way of putting off responsibility for your own actions. "Just do it" is also my motto and it has never failed me. When you don't know what exactly to do or where to start, just go ahead and start. The answers will come to you as you go. Good post.

Item #2 keeps me spinning my wheels. Recently, I finished my report in a week, edited it the second week while researching a good host and autoresponder. I'm still searching, believe it or not. At this time, I haven't committed to any company yet. I don't have a credit card, so I can't get Aweber. And I'm still wondering if Bluehost.com will be my best bet.

      Maybe procrastination is responsible.

Since I'm only starting out, I'm looking for the simplest way. So far, I've done the report.
