Hello, I have witness a lot of people here that seem to have a little bit of trouble getting their business to work. So to help each other out, let's provide 1 tip that would improve each other's productivity during the day.

Also, try not to be too general like "wake up earlier". I'll start...

If you want to be more productive during the day, try waking up 15 minutes earlier for a week. You will have almost 2 hours extra do whatever you want to do, and also start out the day before everyone wakes up.

For example, say you currently wake up at 8:00 AM. Try setting your alarm clock for 7:45 AM (day 1), then 7:30 AM (day 2), 7:15 AM (day 3), 7:00 AM (day 4), 6:45 AM (day 5), 6:30 AM (day 6), and 6:15 AM (day 7). You do this because it might be hard to say, "Okay I want to wake up 2 hours earlier," but if you focus waking up 15 minutes earlier a day, 2 hours become easier to do, and allows you to become more productive during the day if you use that time wisely.

  • I have found treating my online business like I would an offline business..
    Waking up on time for work.. (Is always important, so why treat your online business any different)

    I also find, giving myself a set amount of time to get through my emails say 1 hour...

    Once I have done my emails, I then shut it off and then layout my day and set out what i want to achieve that day...
    I find this a great site to organise your working day.. it has done wonders for me...

    My tip would be to break up your day into chunks. Set a timer for a task - such as writing for 30 mins, and make sure you focus right until that timer goes off.

    • If you work from home get dressed like your going to the office instead of working in comfy pjs or sweatpants. It will help you get into the mood and keep you focused.

    • Same here, I break it up in to 2hour chunks with a timer. But once it goes off, I leave the area completely. I walk out my office and spend atleast 15 minutes out of the office but no more than 30 minutes
  • A tip from my side would be to be mentally focussed and high in morale. If you do not be self confident, you will never give your 100% output. For example, you can try reading inspirational quotes every time you start feeling a bit low.
  • My tip is planning - have a clear end goal and a detailed plan of how to get there.

    It will probably change as you progress, but adapt it as it does. Having this plan keeps you focused and stops you wasting time on other activities which don't help you to reach your goal.
  • Getting a physical to-do list also helped me - just a simple notebook that I would list every small or big task I had to do for the day and tick them off as I did them - I'd say in my first year of business this had me doing crazy amounts of work as I wrote too much down, underestimated the amount of time things would take etc - this works better if you tell people about it and make yourself accountable or have a punishment if you don't complete it all... you still have to actually want to do it and to follow through though.

    And I agree with Tasso, treat your business as if it is an offline business. Wake up early, we all know that people are more productive in the morning. Try to do some sports, even if you are not a sports fan, take a walk every day, this will clear up your mind and even make you more productive.
  • I try to get out of the hosue b/c I go stir crazy. Typically speaking, I have never had an issue getting started, it's when in the mid afternoon that nap would sound good. I try to do something that will wake me up, energize me somewhat.

    As far as extra 15 min less sleep? Ain't happening. My internal alarm goes off around 7 every morning, unless I've been up until 3am, then it let's me sleep until 8.

    • Ummm...I know I could draw heavy fire for this, but I am not so sure about the coffee thing.

      Once I did a test and stopped for a month. What I discovered was two things:

      1. I love the 'BUMP' coffee brings.
      2. It does NOT support productivity. In fact, it REDUCES productivity by causing scattered thinking.

      Yes - I found it was much, much more difficult to focus with coffee (caffeine) than without.

      ....but Hey! That's just me.

  • When you're on the pc for WORK (well we try ), use LeechBlock - blocks out all the time-wasting sites so you actually get WORK done yay!

    Trust me on this one. I'm a serial time-waster on youtube and on drama sites...oh wait EX-serial time waster.

    But I told myself that 2010's gotta be the best year for me so I started using LeechBlock since Jan and in the past month, I managed to get my first report done yay!

    So yea don't underestimate the power of LeechBlock - USE IT and you'll see the improvement by leaps like I did and still am and will be forever

    • Work progressively and consistently, by following a day-by-day schedule. Don't make all the tasks in the same order each and every day, mix them up for a bit for variety.
    • Thanks for this - This is just what I needed, I've already seen an increase in my productivity just from keeping my email closed all but a few times in the day. This will really help.

    That is, pick an important task from your to-do list and attack that task during the first hour of your day. It will insure that you get something important accomplished right away, and will also set the tone for the rest of the day ...

  • Turn off the TV.
  • Set yourself small goals for the day, write a list of them and tick them off when you've completed them. Seeing yourself accomplish small steps is a great motivator to keep going. Repeat for the next day...
  • Feared Things First.

    Make a list and then focus on the most unpleasant, uncomfortable or annoying thing on the list right away and get it done. Get in the habit of doing this every day and your production will go up dramatically.

      Say no to nonessential tasks. Consider your goals and schedule before agreeing to take on additional work. Most important take a break break when needed. Too much stress can derail your attempts at getting organized.
  • I had a massive task of mindless data entry that I'd already avoided for weeks. Finally, this December, I knew it was time to use that magic phrase I see here often...TAKE ACTION. So I made a deal with myself to work 30 hours a week on it until it was done. To make sure I stuck with it, I logged my hours, writing them down in a little notebook. Somehow the logging of hours brought a sense of accomplishment and realization that these small chunks were adding up in a big way.

    Now that the task is finally over, I don't need to log hours anymore, but I'll do it again whenever I can't seem to get the engine moving.
  • Whenever you have to look around to figure where to put something, choose a good enough place to put it and then always put it there. One less thing to have to clutter up your thinking.

      I'd like to share the method that helps me to keep up to 20 tasks in the focus of my attention. I have a special excel sheet where I write my tasks for the day.
      1) Write tasks for the day
      2) Define the deadline in hours for every task. For example I do this task till 2 p.m.
      3) Define how much minutes I need to realize it. For example, to create a proposal I need 150 minutes.
      4) Define the period of time you plan to realize it. For example, I'll be doing it from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m.
      5) Analyze this schedule at the end of the day.
      6) Write down how many minutes did it take in fact
      7) Write down what period of time you spent for exact tasks. For example, in fact I was doing this task from 1.30 p.m. to 3 p.m.
      8) Define the measurable result of you actions for every task.

      This tool helps me to improve my time management and I can always remember myself what tasks I still have to do to reach my goal.
  • Plan the day before. And I use the pomodoro technique: a timer made a great difference for me.
  • Love this thread! My suggestion: break up every task into 15 - 20 minute portions...that way, it is hard to 'talk yourself out of' doing it....

    A - Accept - accept you need to address things, change things and improve things.

    Do so coldly and rapidly, so you can take better action more quickly. If you do not honestly face up to the things you put in your own way, you are setting yourself up to never reach your full potential.

  • I'm a big fan of the diary, make a note of all the things you intend to do during the day/week/month and revisit the list regularly. This has the two way effect of notifying you that you are falling behind (so you need to speed up!) or giving you satisfaction when you mark an item off!
  • Keep a whiteboard right next to your desk. If you think of something as you were in the middle of something else, just write it down on the whiteboard so you dont forget and when you finished with the first activity, then pursue the second.

    • Think out of the box with your To Do List...

      I had tried a To Do List and limited myself to 5-10 items only. Then at the end of my day I would shift unfinished items to the top of the next day's list. As you can imagine, my productivity began to decline as the week progressed. Recently an improvement idea hit me and it works like a charm.

      I still use a To Do list with my 5-10 item limit. But now I've added a To Do Today list! The items that must be handled are on this new list because they are priorities that have to be handled by COB.

      On the regular to do list are those things that must be handled, but are lower priorities. This list now serves as more of a tickler file that keeps these things on the back burner until their priority status changes. Naturally they are reviewed daily and sometimes the status is upgraded, however, the To Do Today List is 100% handled by the end of every work day.

      Hope this helps you become more productive.

      This was a breakthrough for me.
      I would forget things, and got to where I struggled to remember something while I was trying to focus on something else.
      I thought something like, "I SHOULD be able to remember!"

      Yeah!

      Right!

      Now I just zip it out of my head and onto paper.

      Essential to put it where you will see it - not just on a little scrap piece that will get lost again.

  • Here's one that works pretty good for me.

    Always set a time to do a certain task. Then stop doing the task when the time's
    up. Our objective after all is to manage our time.

    For example if you want to find information on creating ebook covers for your
    website then you'll need to search on the internet for this topic. This can be
    become addictive.

    Before you know it, you've spent 3 hours on this task together with searching for
    other topics while you were at it. Well that messed up everything didn't it?
    When carrying out tasks set yourself a time of say 1 or 2 hours.

    If you can't complete it then set another hour for it the next day. Don't dwell on a certain task too long otherwise it will ruin your time management and affect you completing other tasks.

    Keep plugging away and never give up!!

  • Every night before your finish your day's work, make a list of the ten most important things you need to do the following day. It helps keep you organized and on track. I keep mine and sometimes look back to see what I've been up to. Sometimes that history tells me I'm being really productive and sometimes I learn that I'm spending too much time working busy instead of working smart.

  • Spend more time looking in front of you than looking at the ground. Keep your chin parallel to the ground or higher. Its amazing that humans constantly look at the ground whether it be walking or running or anything.

    If you pay attention you will realize how often you look down instead of up. And I do mean this literally.

  • Make a daily list of tasks u would like to complete, make sure the list is achievable (dnt set extreme goals) and stick to it.
  • Don't stay to much on forums

    Don't spend to much time thinking. Time should be 10% thinking and 90% doing something.
  • Allocate specific work hours everyday... Even though most of us work from home and have felxible working hours (the luxury of having an internet business), but i realised that most IMers burn alot of time in front of the computer and a stime passes, their productivity gradually drops when tthier in front of their computer.. they start FBing, twitter, msn, checking mail and looking at their clickbank stats...

    For me, i personally solved this problem by allocating specific work hours to work on my business. For example, when i start work at 9am, i allocate 6 hours to focus on my business, and just my business.. No answering mails, no checking FB statuses, no tweeting, no logging in to my clickbank account and stuff.. Its just 6 solid hours in front of my computer, even my lunch is eaten in front of the computer (the only time i leave my seat is to ease myself ).. This way, i ensure that the 6 hours are 100% focused on my business and i do not waste anytime slacking around or getting distracted..

    After my work hours end, i then dedicate 2 hours to play around and relax.. like FB, twitter and all the unimportant stuff mentioned above..

    When working on the net, its really easy to get distracted and feel burned out easily with the high number of distractions available on your browser and even your desktop. The key is to focus on one thing at a time and give it your fullest attention when you're doing it!
