Writing about and monetising painful stuff
I wonder if anyone has had any success about monetising their writing about painful stuff. I'm talking about writing blogs and ebooks about illnesses, relationship troubles, redundancy - that sort of thing.
A few things have made me notice that this might be a lucrative line of work...
1. Few people like writing about this kind of stuff. But many people NEED to read about it. If they have a problem, the Internet is usually where they look first for the solution.
2. I was a recent contributer to a relationship forum. My relationship was going through a rocky patch. I loved writing about the good times, so I didn't see why I shouldn't write about the bad stuff as well. I put in all the details. Everything. No other contributer has done that. You would not believe the amount of vitriol I got in response. My goodness I drove people nuts. But get this - my thread was the most popular thread on the entire forum. Its page impressions were 50% more than the next most popular thread, and that thread had been going on for twice as long as mine.
3. A few years ago I recovered from a health issue and I have written an eBook about it. I am certain I have an enormous cash cow on my hands. However, I am not certain if I will get sidelined because I am not a health professional, or whether people will appreciate me as someone who has actually recovered from the condition. Has anyone monetised something similar?
