Writing about and monetising painful stuff

Hi all,

I wonder if anyone has had any success about monetising their writing about painful stuff. I'm talking about writing blogs and ebooks about illnesses, relationship troubles, redundancy - that sort of thing.

A few things have made me notice that this might be a lucrative line of work...

1. Few people like writing about this kind of stuff. But many people NEED to read about it. If they have a problem, the Internet is usually where they look first for the solution.

2. I was a recent contributer to a relationship forum. My relationship was going through a rocky patch. I loved writing about the good times, so I didn't see why I shouldn't write about the bad stuff as well. I put in all the details. Everything. No other contributer has done that. You would not believe the amount of vitriol I got in response. My goodness I drove people nuts. But get this - my thread was the most popular thread on the entire forum. Its page impressions were 50% more than the next most popular thread, and that thread had been going on for twice as long as mine.

3. A few years ago I recovered from a health issue and I have written an eBook about it. I am certain I have an enormous cash cow on my hands. However, I am not certain if I will get sidelined because I am not a health professional, or whether people will appreciate me as someone who has actually recovered from the condition. Has anyone monetised something similar?

I think you could make something of this - I don't know how well he actually does financially but he is well enough known within his niche - Adam Pick on heart valve surgery - Don't know if I can post links but search for him like that and you will find him - you can see his site and try and estimate traffic and see if you could do something similar / better etc

ok... but here it's a difference... Oprah has a TV show... in writing is more difficult to succeed... almost impossible with this kind of theme.
        Good luck!

Most gurus of self-improvement anyway mention some painful staff from their own experience before motivating people by their success story. That's why not many people can become a couch or mentor because you need to tell both about painful and successful experience.
