Change your perspective, change your life

I've seen some very unhappy posts around here lately, and I gotta tell ya, I understand completely.

It's very difficult trying to figure out what to do, where your passion lies, and how to make a living following it, even when things are calm and you have very few responsibilities or stressors in your life.

I once had a book entitled Do What You Love And The Money Will Follow or something like that, and I remember skimming through it and thinking that's not true. That isn't all there is to it. And it isn't. I've been doing something I love for more than 20 years ~ teaching at a university ~ and believe me the money has never been good. So it isn't enough to say "do what you love."

You do need to find out what it is you love, what you're passionate about, what makes you feel so good when you do it, you'd do it (and maybe already do) even if you weren't getting paid for it. For me, the only thing I'm more passionate about than teaching is words ~ words in a row, reading them, writing them, listening to them on audio books, experiencing the places and events they transport me to when they're used well.

And I've never known, until recently, how to turn that passion into something that the "money will follow." Thanks to a coach/friend of mine, I'm now on that road. But it didn't happen over-night, I'm not yet where I want to be financially, and I have my own fears and insecurities to battle, just like everyone else.

With this as with so many things, what you have to do first is change your perspective. Don't go at this internet marketing ~ or anything else ~ from the perspective of "what can I do to make money," don't follow the crowd, don't listen to all the voices yammering in your head or your inbox. Disconnect from all that, unsubscribe from all those newsletters and membership sites for things that you're not really interested in but seemed like THE WAY at the time.

Get quiet. Listen to yourself. Imagine what you would be doing if money was not a worry. Once you have it, write it down so it won't slip away. Then change your perspective to that of your audience, your potential clients or customers. What aspect of what you love can you turn into something that will serve others, meet their needs or desires, help them really improve their lives or their situation.

That is the beginning of finding what you can do with your passion that will change your life ~ and the lives of others ~ and that's when the money will follow.

You got paid for teaching, didn't you? If so, the money followed. Every time I hear or read that advice, in my mind I always think, "Yes, but how much money will follow?"

The value of doing what you love follows the same principles as any product - the market determines the value through the mechanism of demand, quality, and availability. If we ignore that, the only way we hit the big paydays is if we get lucky.

You're getting the idea now, but there still has to be adequate demand or you're still not going to make much money. Demand is determined by research, not guesswork.

Just when you think you've got it all figured out, someone changes the rules.

Well this isn't true for everyone. What if I was to say I like watching TV all day and eating chips and it really makes me happy...Will that make me money?

Well, I don't know about that. Eating chips and sitting in front of the boob tube is only one thing that makes you happy, even though it doesn't earn you any money------unless you happen to be getting paid for trying a new product.

      Just kidding.

Seriously, there are other paying activities that you can do that provide an income AND make you happy.
