How Do You Define Creativity?

Creativity is simply defined as the ability to see what others are seeing but think what others are not thinking. What do I mean?

The Wright brothers saw a bicycle and the wings of a bird the same way all of us see them today but they thought that man can fly if there could be a connection between the bicycle and the wings.

In addition, the human legs have been there before shoes came into existence but somebody had to think what others never thought of in order to bring them into being though every other person was seeing the same thing - the legs.

So, I conclude that if you can see what others are seeing but think in a different way, you are creative - creativity is not a function of the eyes but a function of the mind.

Creativity is something that you have worked on to surprise others but not yourself. At least that's what I think...

    Amongst other things:

Creativity is the ability to see another angle on a seemingly down the line matter

Yeah, for me creativity is letting your mind and brain work freely, without any of the normal societal constraints. Its not thinking one way about something because you are supposed to or because other people do. Its letting your mind, brain, and imagination completely free.

creativity is a powerful personal and professional concept

For the most part, creativity is viewing the commonplace in the opposite way and daring to think "outside the box." For example, finding a different use for a common object in order to solve a given problem. Or take the opposite view of an issue that many people share similar views of.

for me creativity is when the subconscious does magic on hard work done beforehand.

personally, I can't "force" creativity -- for me it's usually taking on TONS of information without the objective of coming up with something novel. Once there is a certain level of different views, different takes, suddenly my brain comes up with something new.

btw, for me this is not theoretical -- I used to work as a research scientist in neurology, and I've got some pretty kick-a** patents -- and all of them came up suddenly and unexpected -- I've even had an Eureka-moment (shouting out loud in a middle of a corporate meeting -- awesome).

all the other patents are so-so, stuff where we "had to be creative"...

I see it as the ability to see dynamic connections between or among seemingly unrelated objects/ideas/concepts - and in doing so to develop a new 'whole' that is greater than the sum of the individual parts.

One simple example. Some people are able to look in a refrigerator, and where I see nothing but a few disjointed remnants ("it's time to go to the supermarket!") - someone more creative than I can visualize and create a gourmet meal.

Regardless of the definitions, and as the old saying goes "knowing without doind, is not really knowing"

I have always been interested in creativity and more importantly how to get it.

I love Edward de Bono's work as well as Michael Michalko. Both who have a few books/articles on practical ways of acheiving creativity.

Creativity lives in the mind of the beholder. Most folks will only see the obstacles before them, a creative individual will see the path and focus on the destination while others are distracted by the obstacles.

IF you pinned down a definition of creativity. Some one is bound to come out with some way outside the definition to be creative.

As we go through the rise of the creative person. which is what our world is going through right now. We need the people who can put normal ideas together and come up with something new. We need the people who take a practice from on field bring it to another field and change it . We need artists of all types. inventors programmers. All different aspects of creativity.

The world is crumbling around us. We need everyone to get together and create a new better world. It is an amazing time we live in.

Personally I feel my creativity comes from looking at different perspectives and angles while at the same time learning how to structure things differently.

Just messing with and picking at everything gets you incredible places

I'm an artist myself and love to paint so this subject got my attention!

To me I think creativity is losing yourself in the flow of whatever you are doing at the moment. Let your mind wander and don't take the task at hand too seriously. Being playful and have the imagination of a young child is important.

Without creativity our world wouldn't be progressing like it is. It's that simple.

I think creativity is when you come out with something new (obviously)
But the mind doesn't know some new things. He just create new things from what he already knows.

So for me creativity is be abble to combine some existing ideas to create new ones.

By going further I would say that to be creative you have to think unconventionaly from others.
Even if you come out with some very stupid idea, this stupid ideas can make you think about a good idea.
But if you don't try a maximum of ideas even the stupid ones, you will maybe never come out with creativity.

I believe that creativity is when that which was not in existence is uniquely made into existence, shaped and formed by the mind, it is completely original and perfect to the creator. It cannot be disputed, for it is one of a kind.

This is cliche, but I also feel that it is thinking outside of the box. Expanding a thought to a place where it has not yet gone.

I define creativity as the act of turning new and imaginative ideas into reality. Creativity involves two processes: thinking, then producing. Innovation is the production or implementation of an idea. If you have ideas, but don't act on them, you are imaginative but not creative.

today, I think i define creativity as climbing out of bed in your tropical beach house and then sliding down your water-slide/shower into your pool and then climbing out to your fresh WAFFLES and then pondering what you shall do next

oh and there is a mimosa to go with those waffles + bacon and syrup

    and they're all "all natural".

Creativity is equal to lateral thinking. You know, going sideways rather than forward. For this very reason, I find scifi books much more inspiring than self improvement ones /ducks.

Shoe store owner comes home one day and notices the shop next to his has a huge banner outside his shop offering 40% SALE. On the other side of his shop another store has a sign up saying 50% off. Damn, he hasn't thought about putting on a sale just yet. He's only a small store owner, too, he can't afford those kinds of margins.... So he goes inside and has a think. Later that day he steps outside and throws up his own banner: MAIN ENTRANCE. That's what I call creative.
