What does life mean to you? Finding this is the key to your happiness in life. It is how much you have that brings joy and fulfillment. Can we talk about this? Tell me your opinion

My answer is similar, "What am I here for, am I doing what I really LOVE to do?"

the truth is that you may enjoy the passing of time and not find meaning for life. Life is all about finding a purpose and fulfilling it. We've had those who are so rich and yet miserable. Others popular yet depressed if you want true joy find a meaning for your life.

Take your pick of Adam Smith or today's Tibetan masters, the answer is ultimately "to serve others". The economic imperative, as Smith would have it, is to produce or provide a good or service deemed valuable by economic society. Today's New Age Tibetan proponents would argue we should do the same thing in the context of Love and Service (not too far from the best of Christian traditon).

These are not irrelevant concerns today. We will only prosper insofar as we contribute to the economic or spiritual wellbeing of the marketplace.

It is in that sense that we have an ethical role to play out, in IM and in life.

Totally agree, Urban Rehabber. We are here to serve others, to contribute to their spiritual and mind advancement, to make this world a more trustworthy, safe, loving place. I would also add that we are not the only people to live on this planet, many many others will come after us (our own descendants included), so in this context we should strive to maintain it as tidy and unpolluted as possible.

The most intense and longest lasting enjoyment comes from selfless, disinterested, true love.

      Thanks zenmarketing,

The truth is that we cannot only find our true purpose when we connect to the creator of our life. He alone knows why he created us. It is just like the inventor and his invention. The truth is that if can find this purpose our lives will be simplified. It gives us focus and energizes us.

Your first goal in life is to find your purpose for living. The second part is to fulfiling.

Today we celebrate great people like Mother Theresa, Martin Luther and others. The truth is that if they had not found their purpose for life and fulfilled it we will not know them.

The meaning of life is to take the time to prepare for death...

Well i don't known if it was true, but if you consider your own life, at one point you're always ask yourself about death, and seeking or looking for a way to do different kind of things as find a purpose of your life....Inverse this fact and most of time you're looking to find a purpose of your life to find a sense for your death...

Anyway...there is only one way...Most of people say Time is Money...WRONG ...Time is Time and there is no way to rebuild it...Time is your only one Resource, because Time is Life - So live your Life as a fulltime job )

I'm going to have to disagree with the idea that "happiness" is the meaning or purpose to life...

Giving to others may be closer, but this too I think falls short of the fundamental purpose.

I think the core purpose to life is experience itself. Good or bad, happy or unhappy. Experience is the reason we are here.

I think as we gain experience, we evolve spiritually, and an inevitable side effect of an evolved spirit is giving to others and being happy in any situation.

So in a way, I suppose those who say happiness and giving to others is the purpose are kind of right...

However, striving for happiness and striving to give to others is not the point in my eyes. These things come naturally as a result of using your experiences to evolve your consciousness and become more aware of what is truly important.

Just my opinion of course... : P

I also believe that life as we live it here is best justified in the service of others, by that I don't mean you should run after people and satisfy their every whim but rather build yourself a conveyor where upon you can help as many people possible. If every person in the world helped just one person improve the quality of their life, it would certainly be a living eutopia for all of us.

There are many people that genuinely care about others, yet we see all the problems of the world and somehow sink into the depression of it all, till we become somewhat numb towards affairs that don't directly concern us.

A friend of mine is involved in a campaign to bring awareness about the ever growing problem of human trafficking. I was asked a favor by her recently and contrary to the excuses I used to make in the past, I just said yes I'll help out in any way I can. It turned out to be a small thing I had to do but many times, people will ask us small favors like that and we will be already contemplating excuses before hearing them out.

Now, we are not super men or women but by doing small deeds and stop refusing people, we are already doing more then a good part of the world's population. I used to have bad reasoning too, I would either make up excuses cause I felt lazy or I would say, oh well I can't do much, I am only one person.

But hey, I got news for everyone take great men and women in the world, they were helped by people for sure but a lot of their power would have never surfaced if they felt useless and lacked confidence to try and change the world.

The evidence to support my belief is found directly in the blueprint of life, we need people in life, for friendship and for the challenges and to keep the species alive obviously. Yes, you can try and live like a hermit or alone on a island but how long it would be before you start talking to trees and rocks, I just cannot imagine life without others , which is why we should always take care of each other and be of service.

Greed, the opposite of the above is what we should strive to eliminate, when we serve others we also setting examples of a good life and are encouraging those we help to also help.

You may have other ideas but in all my honesty, while we are alive, this is the most instinctual amd noble meaning of living.

      Thanks for reading

The hardest thing in life is to find out who you really are when all the layers are removed, meaning your job title, the fact that you are a parent, friend, sister brother, when you remove all the titles then you can see who you are. When you can see yourself in true light you've made a first step toward fulfillment and change and finding a meaning of your life.

One thing i found out in life is that you can only be happy when you
    1. Do what you are passionate about.
    2. Contribute to the life of other.
You must understand that you succed to the degree you help others succeed. Our are meant to compliment each other. This is why it is impossible to succeed alone. Our goal then is to find where you are strong and help others complinent their weakness.

    I like this post.

The meaning of life. I think it's different for everyone because I think we're all here for different reasons.

Me, personally, I think I'm here to help/inspire others to take action and make a difference. I also think it's about making people feel good about themselves. Caring about others.

It's about always trying one more time and going with that feeling you have in your gut to keep going after what you think is your "calling"

So, I think "meaning of life" is different for every single person, and it can be whatever you want it to be. It can also change whenever you want it to change.

    It's your world.

  • Life to me, is the journey of self discovery...not the destination. Learning, changing, growing.

I wonder if there can really be 'a purpose' behind someone's life...isn't everything a stepping stone to get there?

Isn't our purpose 'to be here now'?

This is the age old question....budhist's will tell you the meaning of life is "to end suffering". This is not that different than what Christians say which is "to return to paradise".

I believe the meaning of life is two fold. One, is to return to bliss (heaven) and two is to help everyone else you come in contact with do the same.

I believe there is a universal consciousness that is completely reflective of all human thought and behaviour on earth. Not only the humans living now but all humans who have ever lived. If the whole of the human population is at war and is suffering then that negatively feeds the universal consciousness. If most of the population is happy and in peace than that will also reshape the unversal consciousness towards peace.

Next time you approach a group of people I want you to do a little experiment. Go up to them and complain about something, it can be work or maybe an argument you had or someone cut you off in traffic. Watch how the group responds and see if the mood turns negative. Now go up to another group and tell them that the day is going great, maybe you got a promotion or won on a scratch off lottery card. Watch how that group responds. Now think about the whole of the world. If all we see is war and strife then that is all we will get. If we spread cheer, love and peace then you will see a shift that will bring light to all dark places.

Some believe a shift in human consciousness will happen in 2012, I am not sure if I agree and that is only because of the state we are in right now. If we can end the wars that are taking place then maybe a shift in consciousness will be possible. All we can do as individuals is feed the universal consciousness only good thoughts and spread the word.

These is are just my thoughts

The two sources that helped me define what life could mean to me are Wallace D. Wattles and The Zohar, the definitive book of Kabbalah.

According to Wallace D. Wattles (of The Science of Getting Rich fame) is that life wants more life, and your job (YOU! Human Being) is to align yourself with that. More life means being able to have all the tools that you are capable of using, being on the cutting edge of thinking, etc. This has been really very inspiring to me.

I have worded this MY WAY: our job is to be God's self-expression. God doesn't have a thumb, but we do. And we are causing full self-expression to God when we use what we were blessed with, our bodies, our minds, our emotions.

Kabbalah is similar, in a way, saying that human beings are a part of the vessel the Light created (eons ago) to receive all its blessings, but (unfortunately and unintentionally) the Light's desire to give got transmitted with the light that was giving fulfillment to the vessel, and at some point the vessel said: I don't want to eat bread of shame any more, I want to be able to earn the light I receive, and be a giver, not just a receiver.

That is what caused the physical universe to spring into place, so that the vessel, (that broke into chards into the billions of souls) can earn its light in an environment of seeming scarcity, by becoming like god: giving of themselves.

Of course, physicality and scarcity are powerful forces, so it is not easy for the souls to "tame" their physical hosts... and only very few people in every generation elevate themselves much on the scale of 0-1000 (100% scarcity/ego to close to godliness).

So, in my life, this moment to moment to moment transformation of the selfishness and the full expression of what's god (without being religious) is the purpose of living, i.e. the meaning I give to life.

And by selfishness I don't necessarily mean material selfishness: generosity of heart is the opposite: I want for everyone what I want for myself. But I won't give it to them and I won't do it FOR them. I inspire them... by MY ACTIONS.

Now, this is a full blog-post... where is my blog... darn... when I need it? lol

I wanted to share this here...

        Are There Any Questions?

"Are there any questions?" An offer that comes at the
end of college lectures and long meetings. Said when an
audience is not only overdosed with information, but
when there is no time left anyhow. At times like that you
sure do have questions. Like, "Can we leave now?" and
"What the hell was this meeting for?" and "Where can I
        get a drink?"
The gesture is supposed to indicate openness on the
part of the speaker, I suppose, but if in fact you do ask a
question, both the speaker and the audience will give you
        drop-dead looks. And some fool-some earnest idiot-always
asks. And the speaker always answers. By repeating
most of what he has already said.
But if there is a little time left and there is a little silence
in response to the invitation, I usually ask the most
important question of all: "What is the Meaning of Life?"
You never know, somebody may have the answer, and
I'd really hate to miss it because I was too socially inhib-
ited to ask. But when I ask, it's usually taken as a kind of
absurdist move-people laugh and nod and gather up their
stuff and the meeting is dismissed on that ridiculous note.
Once, and only once, I asked that question and got a
serious answer. One that is with me still.
First, I must tell you where this happened, because the
place has a power of its own. In Greece again.
Near the village of Gonia, on a rocky bay of the island
of Crete, sits a Greek Orthodox monastery. Alongside it,
on land donated by the monastery, is an institute dedicated
to human understanding and peace, and especially
to rapprochement between Germans and Cretans. An improbable
task, given the bitter residue of wartime.
This site is important, because it overlooks the small
airstrip at Malt~me where Nazi paratroopers invaded Crete
and were attacked by peasants wielding kitchen knives
and hay scythes. The retribution was terrible. The populations
of whole villages were lined up and shot for assaulting
Hitler's finest troops. High above the institute is
a cemetery with a single cross marking the mass grave of
Cretan partisans. And across the bay on yet another hill is
the regimented burial ground of the Nazi paratroopers.
The memorials are so placed that all might see and never
forget. Hate was the only weapon the Cretans had at the
end, and it was a weapon many vowed never to give up.
        Never ever.
Against this heavy curtain of history, in this place
where the stone of hatred is hard and thick, the existence
of an institute devoted to healing the wounds of war is a
fragile paradox. How has it come to be here? The answer
        is a man. Alexander Papaderos.
A doctor of philosophy, teacher, politician, resident of
Athens but a son of this soil.,At war's end he came to be-
lieve that the Germans and the Cretans had much to give
one another-much to learn from one another. That they
had an example to set. For if they could forgive each other
and construct a creative relationship, then any people
        could.
To make a lovely story short, Papaderos succeeded.
The institute became a reality-a conference ground on the
site of horror-and it was in fact a source of productive interaction
between the two countries. Books have been
written on the dreams that were realized by what people
gave to people in this place.
By the time I came to the institute for a summer session,
Alexander Papaderos had become a living legend.
One look at him and you saw his strength and intensityenergy,
physical power, courage, intelligence, passion, and
vivacity radiated from his person. And to speak to him, to
shake his hand, to be in a room with him when he spoke,
was to experience his extraordinary electric humanity.
Few men live up to their reputations when you get close.
        Alexander Papaderos was an exception.
At the last session on the last morning of a two-week
seminar on Greek culture, led by intellectuals and experts
in their fields who were recruited by Papaderos from
across Greece, Papaderos rose from his chair at the back of
the room and walked to the front, where he stood in the
bright Greek sunlight of an open window and looked out.
We followed his gaze across the bay to the iron cross
        marking the German cemetery.
He turned. And made the ritual gesture: "Are there any
        questions?"
Quiet quilted the room. These two weeks had generated
enough questions for a lifetime, but for now there
        was only silence.
"No questions?" Papaderos swept the room with his
        eyes.
        So. I asked.
"Dr. Papaderos, what is the meaning of life?"
The usual laughter followed, and people stirred to go.
Papaderos held up his hand and stilled the room and
looked at me for a long time, asking with his eyes if I was
serious and seeing from my eyes that I was.
        "I will answer your question."
Taking his wallet out of his hip pocket, he fished into
a leather billfold and brought out a very small round mirror,
about the size of a quarter.
And what he said went like this:
"When I was a small child, during the war, we were
very poor and we lived in a remote village. One day, on
the road, I found the broken pieces of a mirror. A German
motorcycle had been wrecked in that place.
"I tried to find all the pieces and put them together,
but it was not possible, so I kept only the largest piece.
This one. And by scratching it on a stone I made it round.
I began to play with it as a toy and became fascinated by
the fact that I could reflect light into dark places where the
sun would never shine-in deep holes and crevices and
dark closets. It became a game for me to get light into the
most inaccessible places I could find.
"I kept the little mirror, and as I went about my growing
up, I would take it out in idle moments and continue
the challenge of the game. As I became a man, I grew to
understand that this was not just a child's game but a
metaphor for what I might do with my life. I came to understand
that I am not the light or the source of light. But light-
truth, understanding, knowledge-is there, and it
will only shine in many dark places if I reflect it.
"I am a fragment of a mirror whose whole design and
shape I do not know. Nevertheless, with what I have I can
reflect light into the dark places of this world-into the
black places in the hearts of men-and change some
things in some people. Perhaps others may see and do
likewise. This is what I am about. This is the meaning of
        my life."
And then he took his small mirror and, holding it carefully,
caught the bright rays of daylight streaming through
the window and reflected them onto my face and onto my
        hands folded on the desk.
Much of what I experienced in the way of information
about Greek culture and history that summer is gone from
memory. But in the wallet of my mind I carry a small
        round mirror still.
        Are there any questions?

For defining meaning of life I would like to remind the saying of Alan Dean Foster:-
: ""Living gives you a better understanding of life. I would hope that my characters have become deeper and more rounded personalities. Wider travels have given me considerably greater insight into how cultural differences affect not only people, but politics and art.""

The meaning of life is something we'll never truly know. Let me explain. First there is a creator. How in the world you explain things exploded into being makes no sense, what made them? What made them explode? Why are organisms and animals on earth only able to survive off of earth's resources? There's a million questions, but the truth of it is this: The meaning of life is up to the creator. Perhaps we are his entertainment. Perhaps he created man because he was lonely. Being outside of time and dependence on anything else, I know I would get very lonely. And since God says we are created in his image, we can see this is true. A man is naturally made to be a companion, whether another male friend, or a wife is his companion does not matter. (By male friend I don't mean homo) Maybe we are just a dream in the mind of God. Maybe we were made to make him happy and through the years we forgot that, which is why our world will NEVER get better. Honestly we come on these forums and spend all our time talking about money, when in reality we should ONLY be talking about money part of the time. I know my purpose of making money is so that I can focus on the deeper things in life. Think about it. If you always have to worry about money, it's hard to focus on something even two days ahead. But if you're set and have an income that's coming in that doesn't require you to work ten hours a day, you can enjoy life more. Alot of people will say the meaning of life is to enjoy life, but, we also have to remember others. Sometimes, things that make us happy are harmful to others. If we can make others happy first then ourselves at the same time, I think everything's ok. THis is a wake up call to anyone who thinks that a single dollar matters once you die. Think about that for a second. This forum won't mean anything once we die. neither will IM. Neither will the internet, or computers, or iPhones. Only thing that will matter are things that we need to start trying to figure out.

you're right it is only the maker that can tell our true for he, like the manufacturer knows why we are made. We are accountable to him only.

Life has no meaning, other that the meaning you give it.

Life has no purpose, other than the purpose you give it.

Thanks to all of you out there. I am happy that there are those who still take time to think of the meaning of life out ther. let me be clear i started this thread to know how we think on this forum and i am happy we are not only mindful of money. We are all different people and are created for different reasons but some thing is common about our purpose. 1. It is not about us. Our purpose is usually to fulfill the lack in the life of others. 2. It brings you fulfillment. it your so called purpose does not bring fulfillment then check it out again. 3. It is beyond this time. Our purpose is meant to last beyond our existence on earth. If you really want to get the best of life then think of life after death. lastly it requires giving. It does not matter what you get but what matters is how much you give. This is the secret to happiness in life. Wish you success.

    Hi guys,

I wonder if "meaning of life" and "purpose of life" could be interchanged here.

Over the decades, I discovered that there is a "normal self" and a "natural self"... and they are typically two very different critters.

I have come to conclude that discovering and expressing one's natural self, whatever that happens to be, is a true purpose in life.

The natural self is the very best one can be, the most one can offer and the most rewarding of all options.

    Be your best.

Jim Rohn says sth like this: "To discover the maximum ability of ownself, to see how far we can go, to see how much we can earn during the lifetime".

It is not the exact quote but I remember something like this is one of his memorial video. (He has left us, yet his teaching & his legacy is always with us) The great business & life philosopher, Jim Rohn.
